PATENT OFFICE,
HENRY STUOKMAN, OF BOURBON TOWNSHIP, MARSHALL COUNTY, IND.
IMKPRovi-:Mi-:Nr iN WASHINGHMAGHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters-Patent No. 136,78?, dated March 11, 1871i.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY STUOKMAN, of Bourbon township, Marshall county, Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
Nature andV Objects of the Invention.
The invention relates to a washing-machine, the inner vertical sidesof which are lined with a corrugated wash-board, in conjunction with which there is provided a rack with dependent standards at its extremities and secured to a shaft operated by a pinion and segmental cog at the end of a lever working on a pin, by means of which a reciprocating movement is communicated to the shaft, rack, and stand- The object of the invention is to pro vide an efficient means of washing clothes and similar material.
Description of the Accompanying Drawing. Y
The drawing represents a view of a device embodying the elements of this invention, a portion ot' the'cover and side being broken out to reveal the internal construction.
General Description.
A in the accompanying drawing is a circu- 1 ir vessel or tub properly elevated by the supports a: and provided with the vent y, not shown. The tub A is provided with a hinged cover, B, which opens upward, and is supported in its upright position by the blocks `z. Opposite this cover is provided the wringerboard w, secured on the outside of the upper circumference of the tub. The tub A'has also a fixed cover, O, which is provided with vthe guide c, serving to' direct and limit the action ofthe lever D, which is pivoted by the fulcrum-pin t upon that part of the cover O opposite the wringer-board w. One end ofthe lever D is provided with a handle projecting beyond the side of the tub, the opposite end of the lever being provided with the segmental cog E, the teeth of which engage those of the pinion F secured to the upper extremity of theshaft H, which projects above thel cover C at the vertical center of the tub A.. At the lower end of the shaft H is secured the rack I, consisting, in the present instance, of two transverse arms mortised at their centers and rigidly attached to the lower end of the shaft H. The extremities of the rack I are provided with the dependent standards L, which descend a proper distance from the upper surface of the bottoni ot' the tub, the arms of the rack being supplied with auxiliary apertures m in which the upper ends of the standards L may be secured when the material to be washed is heavy. The interiorA vertical surface ofthe tub is lined with the corrugated washing board M, between which and the rack a proper distance interven'es to allow the rack to revolve readily.
Operation.
The-tub A being supplied with water or other washing liquid the cover B isyelevated and the material to be washed introduced. The cover is then closed and the' operation Vperformed by moving the handle of the lever D forward and backward, which communicates to the rack I and standards L a reciprocating movement, rubbing the material in reverse directions against the corrugated washboard M on the sides of the tub, thus effectually and thoroughly performing the purpose sought.
