BENCH-HOOK.

Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,678, dated October 16, 1855.

To all whom it may concern;

Be it known that I, A. HOTCHKIN, of Schenevus, in the county of Otsego and State of New York, have invented a new and Joiners Use; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXactdescription of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l, is a longitudinal section of my improvement applied to a work bench which is also bisected longitudinally. Fig. 2, is a transverse vertical section of ditto, Fig. l, showing the plane of section.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.

This invention relates to a new and improved bench hook for the use of carpenters, joiners, etc., and consists in the peculiar construction of the same, as will be presently shown and described, whereby the catch or stop may be readily elevated or depressed the requisite distance from the surface of the bench according to the thickness of the stuff it is designed to hold.

A represents the top plank of a carpenters or joiners work bench, and B represents a metallic plate which is secured to the upper surface of the plank A by a screw To the inner end of the plate B there is secured by a joint (b) a metallic bar C, which may be termed a catch or stop. This catch or stop when fully depressed fits in a recess (o) in a plate F which plate is fitted in the plank A so that its upper surface is Hush with the upper surface of the plank. The plate B is also fitted in a recess in the plank so that the' upper surfaces of both are even or flush with each other. The catch or stop C has a shank (d) attached to its inner end, said shank being in a recess or mortise (e) in the plank A directly underneath the plate B. To the under side of the plate B and within the recess or mortise (e) there is attached a rod (f) which passes through a hole in the shank (ai), and around the rod a spiral spring (g) is placed which tends to throw or keep the catch or stop C upward.

To the under surface of the catch or stop C there is attached a segment bar D one side of which is perforated with holes (h) the upper edges of which are beveled as and Improved Bench-Hook for Carpenters i Shown m Flg. 27 and E 1S a pawl Whlch catches into the holes (p), said pawl passing laterally into the plank A, and through plates (2') which project downward from the plate E which is a continuation ofrplate vB and within which the catch or stop C fits when depressed as previously explained. Around the pawl E a spiral spring is wound as shown in Fig. 2.

By depressing the stop or catch C with the thumb or hand it may be secured at any desired point above the upper surface of the plank A, for as the upper edges of the holes (L) in the segment bar D are beveled the pawl E will be forced out from them, but when the stop or catch is relieved from the pressure of the thumb or hand the spring wil force the pawl into the holes and retain the stop or catch at the desired height. When the stop or catch is fully depressed, the pawl E is forced out from the hole in the segment bar D by pressing the thumb against the outer end of the pawl and the spring (g) forces the catch or stop C upward as shown in red Fig. l.

This invention is extremely simple and convenient; it may berreadily adjusted as has been shown to suit stuff of different thicknesses to be planed or otherwise operated upon, and is economical to manufacture.

lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The construction of the bench hook as herein shown and described, viz, having the catch or stop C attached by a joint (b) to a plate B, said catch or stop being provided with a shank (d) against which a spiral spring (g) acts, and also provided with a segment bar D having holes (k) in one side in which a spring pawl E catches and retains the catch or stop in the desired position.
