BATH-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 8, 1921.
Application led May 7, 1919. Serial No. 295,475.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. KEPLINGER, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bath-Brushes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has for its object to provide what might be termed a bath brush adapted for use on the person to eect thorough cleansing of the skin and has for its object to provide a simple and efficient device of this character which may be readily and efficiently used upon any part of the person.
The invention consists in features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and particularly claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustratin a suitable embodiment of the invention:
igure l is a view in elevation of a cleansing device constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. l.
Fig. 3 is a detail section of one of the pneumatic friction elements on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing amodified form of construction of the dev1ce.
My said device comprises a strip 1 of fabric of any suitable nature such as cotton duck or the like having tapered end portions 2 to which loops 3 are secured, the latter being adapted to be passed over the thumbs or fingers of the hand of the operator for mani ulating the device.
ounted upon one face of the strip 1 at regular intervals and preferably at an incline to the parallel side edges thereof, is a plurality Vof shortv sections 4 of rubber tubing which are sealed at their ends by col lapsing the walls of the tube sections upon each other and cementing or vulcanizing them together at their ends as shown in Fig. 3 so as to trap the air contained in the bodies of the tubes. The collapsed end portions provide iat ends 5 for the tubes which are thus adapted to be and are secured upon one face of the strip l by means of lines of stitching 6, for example, though obviously said tubes may be secured in any other suitable or desirable manner adapted to the purpose.
It will be noted by reference to Fig. l that the tubes may be arranged in two series at opposite end portions of the strip so that the tubes of one set are inclined in the opposite direction from the other set. The inclination of the tubes is desirable so that in moving the strip longitudinally over various portions of the person, the effect will be similar to a continuous rather than an intermittent friction. The tubes being very flexible and being filled with air, as aforesaid, renders them very soft and cushionlike so that when applied to the skin, they will yield to pressure and a considerable part of the surface of each thereof will be flattened against the skin as the strip 1 is tautly drawn around any portion of the body, thus producing a relatively mild but efficient frictional contact between the surface of each tube and the skin over which it is passed thereby effecting a thorough cleansing without, however, occasioning any discomfort to the user.
The several tubes 4 may also be arranged upon one face of the strip as shown in Fig. 4 where they present a substantially zig-zag formation, but itwill be obvious that the relative positioning of the tubes may be changed and varied at will without departing from the invention.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of the invention in the accompanying drawings, it will be understood, of course, that the constructions shown and described may be changed and varied as mechanical skill may suggest to best adapt the same to perform the intended functions without departing from the invention as dened in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A cleansing device comprising a strip of fabric provided on one of its faces with laterally extending sections of rubber tubing having collapsed, hermetically sealed ends and fastening means passing through the collapsed ends of saidtubes and through the edge portions of said strip of fabric.
2. A cleansing device comprising a strip of fabric provided on one of its .faces With tions and at opposite end portions of said two series of shorJ rubber tubes having flat, strip, and lines of sitohing passing through collapsed, hermetically sealed ends, the tubes the edge portions of said strip of fabric and 10 of each seriesbeing parallel with each other through the flat collapsed ends of said tube and extending angularly substantially transsections for securingv theiatter to said strip.
versely of said strip, and the two series thereof being disposed at opposite inclina` GEGRGE B. KEPLINGER.
