CAST UNI)ERIEllitAIlllllE FOR CABS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1921.
Application filed July 14, 1919. Serial No. 310,542.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I CHARLES A. PSILAN- DER,- a citizen of the lj'nited States, residing at Easton, in the county of Northampton and State oflennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in "Cast Underframes for Cars, of which the following is a specification; a
This invention relates to cast steel underframes for cars.
One of the principal objects is to provide an exceptionally light yet strong casting especially' adapted to support the bottom plate and sides of mining cars.
Another object is to provide an integral casting of thincross section constituted of electric steel. g
Another object is to provide an underirame of the characterindicated in which all sections through the longitudinal and cross members are angle shape, the side members or sills-having the horizontal legs of their angles turned toward the center of the frame, and the central longitudinal members having the horizontal legs of their an les turned away from the center.
nother object is to provide an underframe of the character indicated wholly devoid of projections and wherein provision is made for bolting or riveting the edestals to the vertical legs of the side mem ers.
Still another object of the invention is to providein an underframe of the character stated, spring seats for the drawbar or draft rigging.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of the invention will more readil be understoodfrom the following, description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein-- Figure 1 is a top viewof a car underframe embodying features of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged sectional view of one of the spring seats for the. draft rigging.
As stated at the outset, and, as indicated in Fig. 2, the cross-sections are usually thin, being cast from electric steel. I am enabled to do this without weakening the structure in any way by forming the longitudinal and cross members of angle shape.
The casting comprises the central longitudinal members 5, side'members or sills 6,
the end members 7 and 8, and the intermediate cross members 9. As before mentioned, all of the members are of angle form in cross section as indicated in Figs. 2 and 3, the horizontal legs 10 of the side members being inwardly directed, that is to say, toward the center of the casting, and the center sills or longitudinal members having their angular ortions 11 directedtoward the side sills. imilarly the cross members, including the end sills, have their horizon tal faces directed inwardly. The top of the frame is rectangular without any projec tudinal members have drawbar openings 13, v
and intermediate the members 7 and 8 is an integral flanged member 14 with a similar opening 15. langed bushings 16 and 17 are accommodated, respectively in the openings in the members 8 and 14, and are under the compression of a coiled spring 18. The element 19 of the draft rigging is movable in the bushing 17 and is secured to the bushing 16 by a key 20. It will be noted that the inside end sill or tension member 8 isreim forced byhorizontal web 21 flush with the to of the center longitudinal members.
aving described the nature and objects of the invention, I claim 1. An underframe for cars, consisting of a single castin having spaced center and longitudinal si e members of angle shape in cross sections with their horizontal faces in substantially the same plane, the horizontal faces of the side members being directed toward the center of the casting and the hori zontal faces of the center members bein directed in opposite directions and towar the adjacent side member.
2. An underframe for cars, consisting of an integral casting having side and end members, spaced center members, and cross members between the. center members adjacent the end members, the said cross members being formed to provide spaced draft rigging seats.
3. An underframe for cars, consisting of an integral casting having side and end.
members, spaced center members, and cross members between the center members adjacent the end members, the said cross members being formed to provide spaced draft rigging seats, the end member in line with the cross members'being formed to provide a guide for the drawbar.
4.- An integral underframe .for cars having angle-form side members, angle-form spaced center members, -angle-form cross members between the center members adjacent each end of the frame, the vertical webs of such cross members being formed to provide draft rigging seats.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
CHARLES A. PSILANDER.
