ATTORNEY W ITNESS I PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK ELLIS, OF BENTON HARBOR, MICHIGAN.
FASTENER-API'LYING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1921.
Application filed June 1, 1920. Serial No. 385,728.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK ELLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Benton Harbor, in the county of Berrien and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fastener- Applying Devices, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to a fastener applying device mainly designed for applying the hooks used for holding the cover on grape baskets, the principal object of the invention being to provide a device for pressing both ends of the hook into the basket at the same time.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several pztrts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the de vlce.
Fig. 2 is a sectional detail view through a grape basket and its cover showing the hook on which the device is used.
As shown in Fig. 1 the device comprises a pair of members 1 and 2 which are pivotally connected together by the pin 3 so as to provide handle members and jaw members. The jaw member of member 1 is similar to that used in ordinary pliers, the engaging face being straight and roughened if desired. The jaw part of the other member extends at right-angles from the jaw part of the first member and has its end provided with a hook 4.
As shown in Fig. 2 the holding book 5 has one end passing under the band 6 of the basket 7 and its other end bent over the edge of the top 8 and into said top. Thus the top is firmly held on the basket.
In using my device the hook 6 is first placed under the band and is then bent over the top. The hooked jaw of the pliers is then placed in engagement with the band, over the hook 6, and the straight jaw engaging the upper part of the hook 6. The pliers are then lifted slightly and the handles pressed upon which will press the lower part of the hook 6 under the band and the upper part into the cover. Thus the hook 1s quickly and firmly pressed into engagement with the band and cover to hold the cover in place.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A fastener applying device for applying substantially L- shaped fasteners having work penetrating points at the ends of their arms comprising a pair of pivoted members provided with jaws, the jaw of one of said members being substantially straight to engage one side of the fasteners, the other jaw member being extended at substantially right angles to the first jaw member and provided atits lower end with an offset portion to engagethe free end of the opposite side of said L-shaped fasteners. I
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
FRANK ELLIS.
