D W. B. WILSON. WRENCH APPLICATION FILED APR. 28, 1920.

Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1921.
Application filed April as, 1920. Serial no. 377,161.
To all whom'c't may concern.
Be it known that I, D VVAL'roN BURNETT lVILsoN, a citizen of the United States, and
a resident of Stamford, county of Fairfield,
and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements relateto wrenches of the so called monkey type, each formed with a fixed spanner stock jaw and with a movable clamping sleeve jaw; and the invention consists in the specific construction and arrangement of parts described and claimed, a distinctive feature being the formation of the movable clamping sleeve jaw with a convexly curved segmental ratchet rack, for engagement with the stock rack, in conjunction with a spring on said movable jaw which. tends constantly to hold said racks in engagement, and to cause the clamping jaw to function as a spring jaw to pinch and dog the article clamped, all as hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1, is a side elevation of my improved wrench, with the outline of a circular object positioned between its jaws;
Fig. 2, is a rear edge elevation of the main part of the wrench ;v
Fig. 3, is a sectional elevation, the section being taken upon plane of line 3-3, Fig. 2, with the parts in the position shown in Fig. 1; 1
Fig. 4., is a similar section showing the movable jaw held with its ratchet rack out of engagement with the stock rack;
Fig. 5, is an end elevation of the wrench, looking in the direction indicated by the arrow. 1
I have herein shown my invention as embodied in what is technically known as a pipe wrench, the jaws being provided with gripping teeth for engagement with the peripheral surface of an object circular or otherwise curved in cross section,although I do not limit myself in this respect, as my improvement 1s applicable to monkey wrenches generally.
A, is the spanner or hand lever, formed with the fixed stock jaw or head at, having (in the present case) the gripping teeth a, the inner edge of said spanner lever A, being also formed with the rack teeth a preferabgy of barb sha e as shown.
11 Figs. 1 an 3, the circle P, represents the outline of a cl amped. j
C, is my movable spring clamp jaw, formed in the present case with the gripping teeth 0, which are preferablyarranged in slightly concave shape forming the biting edge of the jaw. The body porton c of my spring clamp j a C, isformed with a conveXly segmental series of ratchet rack teeth 0, adapted to engage with the spanner rack teeth (5?, as shown more particularly in Fig. 3, of the drawings, said ratchet rack teeth 0 being held in contactual engagement with said spanner rack teeth (4 normally by a dog spring a, positioned on an exten sion loop oi the body portion 0 of the jaw, and bearing against the rear edge of the spanner lever A.
In Fig. 3, the circle 1, represents the axial center of the segmental rack 0 and the line 2, the center lineof fulcrum action between the parts,the dog spring 8 tending constantly to rock the movable jaw C, in the direction of the arrows 3 and 4, thereby causing the biting edge and teeth 0, of the jaw C, to press against and pinch the peripheral surface of an object P, positioned between said movable aw C, and the head or stockjawn, of the spanner A.
' 0' is an auxiliary loop extension of the body portion 0 of my movable springclamping jaw C, which aids in supporting the same laterally upon the spanner lever A.
When it is desired to adjust my movable spring jaw C, upon the spanner lever A, in either direction it is tilted over by hand as indicated in Fig. 41, so as to disengage its segmental. ratchet teeth 0 from the stock rack teeth a By this means the bearing surfaces It, and 0, may be proximately applied to the peripheral. surface of an object P, to be clamped and manipulated,-the manual release of my spring cIamp jaw C, under such circumstances allowing the dog spring a, to interlock therack teeth and rock the jaw C, onthe fulcrum line 2, in such manner as to pinch the article P, as hereinbetore set forth, and thereby lock the wrench firmly in position thereon.
hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
l. A wrench of the character designated, comprising a spanner lever formed with a head jaw, and with stock rack teeth, and a movable jaw formed with a convexly segmental series of ratchet rack teeth engage pipe or other object to be 1 on its said convexly segmental series of ratchet rack teeth in such manner as to pinch an article interposed between the wrench jaws when the lever is swung in a clockwise direction, for the purpose set forth.
2. A wrench comprising a spanner lever with rigid toothed jaw and rack teeth, and a movable jaw having article-engaging portion for cooperation with the fixed jaw and having its body portion formed with a convexly segmental series of teeth, said movable jaw having loop extensions loosely embracing and receivlng the spanner, and a spring in one only of said loops bearing against the outer face of the spanner and tending to rock the movable aw to hold the segmental teeth thereof in engagement with the teeth of the spanner to press the acting edge of the movable jaw against and pinch an object between such acting edge and the teeth of the fixed jaw when the lever is swung in a clockwise direction.
