AXEL PETERSON, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR IO JOHN E. SJOSTROM COMPANY, INCORPORATED, 013 PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, A
CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
FILINGCASE on CABINET.
Application filed January 29, 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AxnL PETERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Filing Cases or Cabinets, of which the following is a speci fication.
My invention relates to filing cases or cabinets for papers, phonograph records, or the like (hereinafter referred to as arecord cabinet), and particularly to that class of such cabinets which comprise a fixed outer casing open in front and a rotatable inner casing or carrier for the records, open in front and closed at the back and sides and so mounted within the outer casing that either the open front or closed back of the same may be caused to register with the open front of said outer casing.
The object of my invention is to so construct a carrier and to so mount the same within the fixed casing that when the carrier is in the open position the cabinet will pre sent the appearance of a fixed cabinet having partition members integral therewith and projecting therefrom, but can be closed without the use of a special hinged closing door or doors.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a record case or cabinet constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 22, Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3, Fig. 1, and
Fi 4 is a View similar to Fig. 3, but showing the record carrier turned so as to expose its open front at the open front of the fixed casing,
In the drawing, 1 represents the fixed outer casing of a box-like form in horizontal cross-section, closed at sides, back, top and bottom, as shown in Fig. 1, but having an opening in the front, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. Within this outer casing is disposed a rotatable recordcarrier which is likewise of box-like form in horizontal section is open at the front, but has closed sides 4, back a, top 5, and bottom 5, this carrier having therein partitions which project beyond the open front of the same, said carrier being rotatabl mounted within the fixed casing, prefera ly by means of pivots 6 and Specification of Letters Patent.

7 at top and bottom, respectively, as shown in Fig. 1. These pivots are disposed directly one above the other so that the carrier swings about a vertical axis located between the open front and closed back of the same some distance in the rear of the open front of the fixed casing and at the same distance from the closed back of the carrier but at a greater distance from the forward ends, of the partitions therein.
Secured to the top pivot 6 is a toothed pinion 8, and pivotally mounted at 9 upon the under side of the top of the fixed casing is a lever 10, the inner arm of which is of such width as to permit of the formation thereon of a segmental rack 11 which engages the pinion 8, as shown in Fig. 2, the other arm of the lever projecting through a slot in the front of the fixed casing so as to be readily accessible from the outside of the same for the purpose of operation. By moving the lever 10 to the position shown in Fig. 2 the open front of the record carrier is swung inwardly and the closed back 1 of the same is moved into registry with the open front of the fixed casing 1, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, so as to prevent access to the records disposed in said carrier, but by moving the lever 10 to the opposite position from that shown in Fig. 2 the record-carrier will be rotated within the fixed outer casing so as to expose its open front at the open front of said outer casing and permit access to the records filed or stored therein. When in this position the opposite sides of the carrier are in registry with the opposite edges of the front opening in the fixed casing, with the effect of making the partitions in the carrier appear as though they were an integral part of said fixed casing.
In order to accurately limit the move ment of which the lever 10 is capable, so as to cause the record-carrier to stop when either in fully open or fully closed position, I provide, upon the outer face of the front of the fixed casing, a slotted guide plate 12 through the slot of which the outer arm of the lever 10 projects and in which it plays. The ends of the slot in this guide plate serve, by contact with the outer arm of the lever 10, to properly restrict the swing of said lever in either direction and correspondingly restrict the extent of rotation of the record-carrier.
While I prefer to employ a swinging lever having a segmental rack for engaging the pinion 8,- said pinion might engage with a straight rack secured to or formed on a bar slidably mounted within the casing l and accessible from outside of the same so as to be pulled out in order to swing the record carrier in one direction or pushed in in order to swing it in the opposite direction, this being such a palpable modification of the preferred construction as not to require special illustration.
I am aware that, previous to my invention, numerous forms of cabinet have been devised in which a fixed casing having an open front has been combined with an inner structure open at front and back and mounted so as to be rotatable within the fixed casing so as to bring either its open front or closed back in register with the open front of said fixed casing, and hence I make no claim for such combinatiom my invention being based upon the particular relation of the partitions in the pivoted structure in respect to the open front thereof and to the open front o1 the fixed casing when said open front of the revolving structure is in registry therewith.
I claim:
The combination, in a filing or storage cabinet, of a fixed outer casing of box-like horizontal cross section with straight sides and back and open front and an inner rotatable structure also of box-like horizontal cross section with straight sides and back and open front, said rotatable structure being so mounted. within the fixed casing as to rotate about a vertical axis located between the open front and closed back of said structure at some distance in the rear of the open front of the fixed casing and at the same (lire tance from the closed back of the rotatable. structure but at a greater distance from the open front of the latter, whereby when it is in the open position its front end will project beyond the open front end'ot the fixed casing and when in the c osed position its closed back will extend straight across between the opposite edges of the open front of the fixed casing, the opposite sides of the rotatable structure, when in the latter position. registering with the opposite edges of the open front of the fixed casing.
In testimony whereof I have signed in name to this specification.
AXEL PETERSON.
