Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, 1921.
Application` led October 1920. Serial No. 415,113.
. ingis a specification.
he object of the invention is to provide a salt-shaker which will always run freely and controllably, irrespective of conditionsl tending to cause clogging or lumping, and
which is simpl and advantageously constructed. To t is end, the invention may be said to consist in the novel device, and the arts, improvements and combinations hereinafterdescribed in preferred embodiment, and'more particularly pointed out in the ap nded'claim.
In .t e accompanying drawings, forming a art hereof:
' igure 1 is 'an elevation Fig. 2 is acentral Vertical section.;
Fig. 3 is a view corresponding to the lower part of Fig. 2, with the plug or valve open; and
Figs. lines 4-4 and 5-5 ofl Fig. 2.V
The shaker hasan upright holder 1 the salt chamber 2 of which has asloing bottom 3 with a central throat or ischarge l opening 4. A base 5 below. the throat contains a flarin mouth 6. f
The throat 1s normally closed by a tapered plug 7 the lower portion of which seats upwardly against the throat, this portion being preferably formed with an annularv groove in which is held a truncated conical washer or packing gasket 8 of suitable material. Above or inwardly of the seating portion is a series of ytransverse corrugations 9, of diminishing diameters,said corrugations' serving to break up lumps when 1 the plu .is depressed so as to open an annular out et`between it and the throat, the
4 and 5 are horizontal sections on they .an outer rim encirc e to pro uce the desired'iiow. The corrugations also constitute'bales to prevent too .copious a discharge when the salt is dry and in good condition, and by reason of the taper or graduation the size of the outlet is variable according to the extent to which the lplug is projected within the mouth.
T e plug is on the lower end of a spindle or connection 10 passing through the saltchamber, and havlng a projectmg plunger l1 secured to its up er end, whereby the plug is unseated by. nger pressure exerted against a `spring 12, which serves to close.
the valve. a A ring 13 fixed to the open upper end o the body of the holder carries a central vertical s ring barrel 14, in which the plunger is gui ed; and the top is closed by a removable ca 15 having a central openin to acl.commo ate the spring barrel. Sai cap is retained by a bayonet joint formed by lat eral projections 1,6 on the ring l'and corresponding notches 17 in the lower rim of the cap, communicating with the interior of an annular pressed-out bead 18 in which. the projections are lockedpby turning the eatin.
at is claimed as new is:
' A shaker comprising a holder having a throat in the bottom, a longitudinally movable plug in the throat, an open ring fixed to the open upper end of the body .of the holder and carrying a central spring barrel, and adplunger operative in the sprlng barrel an connected with the plug, in combination with a removable cover fitting centrally around the spring barrel and having ing the fixed ring, said rim having a pressed-out circumferential bead and a slotted lentrance thereto from the lower edge of' the rim and a projection on the ring ada ted to lock behind said bead.
