Application filed` October 22, 1917, Seriall No. 197,777; Iucnewedl` lune 12, 1920.` Serial No. 388,287;
To all 'whom t may.y concer/1t.'
Be it known that` I, THoMAs B. DRAPER, a subject of the King of Great Britaimresidinef` at Detroit,in the county of Wayne and tate of Michigan, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Combined Couches. and Cribs, of which the f ol lowing is a specification, reference, being had therein to the accompanying drawings;
This invention relates-.tof a combined couch andI crib, and the rimary object` of my invention isito provi e a couch in a portion` ot which a crib, cot or other structure may be concealed whileanother. portion of the couch may be used as a` chester compartment for clothes orV other matter.
Another object of my invention is to fur nish a couch with a concealed crib or bed structure` that may be easily and quickly withdrawn to an active useful position, the operation ot withdrawing the crib causing` the parts thereof to assume supporting positions so that the` crib or bed structure is ready for use.
A further objectof my invention is to provide a piece of furniture of the above class wherein the parts are constructed with a View o1 reducing the cost of manufacture and at the same time retain those Jfeatures by which safety, durability and ease of assembling` are secured. With such ends 1n view, my invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and then claimed. y y y Reference will nowr be had` to the draw in s, whereinigure lisa side elevation of the couch, partly broken away and partly in sectlon, showing by dotted linesthe crib` as partially placedin the couch; y p

Fig. 3. is a side elevation of thecrib in an active position, with the side railsV thereof raised;` y y Fig. Llis an end view` of the same Fig. 5 is aside elevation of a portion of the crib, partly broken away and partly in section, showing the side rails thereof lowered;
Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view ofl a p0r` tion ofthe crib illustratingone ot thelatches thereof., and` Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a detached latch. y y
The couch comprises an. Qblrmg. box like structure having a bottom wal-*ll 1 supported by suitable legs 2, fixed longitudinal walls 3 a fixed end wall? 4f, andi' a transverse par'- tition 5. The transverse partition 51 is conu tiguous to one end of the couch and is con-- nected by longitudinal". partitions T to the end wall 4:, said; longitudinal partitionsbeing adjacent` the side walls 31 so as: to provide side compartments or pocltets 8, and a lar compartment between: the partitions 7 1n which clothes or other matter may be placed. The upper edges of the` Side walls 3, 11d-- lacent the transverse partition 5': are pro-l vlded with bearings 6 and` pivotallly corrnectedk to or fulcrumedl on.` saidV bearings are arms 9having the endsthereot in frictional engagement with sector plates 10 in` the pockets 8 at the chest end of the couch. The other ends; of the arms 9 support a couch top or cushion 11 having an end wall 12 adapted to` close the large compartment formedl by the side@ walls,` 3, bottom wall? l and partition 5; The couch top may` be ot any conventional form, for instance as shown in Fig. 2, and may be raised" and held in adjusted position.: through the me dium off the arms 9: engaging the sector plateslO, said sect'orplates also constituting movement of the couch; top.
A cover or cushion 13 is adapted: to; close the small compartment of the couchI and aline with the couch top 11, when; closed.`
In the large compartment oV the couch.` is a` crib frame 14 adapted; for supporting a suitable; spring 15. The outer endl of thev crib `frame 141 rests-g upon:` anti-.frictional rollers.` 16 adjacent theend; wall 12, and when. the couch top is raised; the crib` trame- 14 may be pulled outwardly on said rollers;- The lower edges of the; crib. frame` adjacent the inner end thereon. are prmrlided vwith strap, hin-pies 17 connectedrto a head o1'V foot piere18 having casters 1.9i v
Connected to the upper edgesvothearamc 14, adjacent the outer end thereon, and by' strap hinges 2O is a head or foot piece 21 having casters 22. With the couch top raised, the piece 21 may be gripped: to pull the crib frame 1.4` outwardlyand-in sol doing the piece 21 is` swung to an active position,
that is, from a horizontal position to.r sube stantially a vertical position at rightangles tothe outer end of thecrihiframe;114i.` Asfthei crib. frame is pulledoutwardly, the cestem 19 of thepiece 18 impingel againstthexmllpm la,1 which. serve as. tcmpcrmf ratentealnennieei.
the piece 18 to pivot 'on itsA casters and be swung to a vertical position at right angles to the inner end of the crib frame 14. In such position the crib can be further moved from its.V compartment of the couch.
Connected to the inner longitudinal side wallsof the frame 14 by double strap hinges 23 are side rails 24 of any desired design. The side rails 24 are swung inwardly one upon the other, as shown in Fig. 2, when the crib is housed within the couch, but said side rails may be raised to a vertical position on the frame 14, as'shown in Figs. 3 and 4, or may be lowered at the outer sides` of theV frame as shown in Fig. 5.
Y .It is necessary to use a plurality of latches invconnection with the crib structure and at the ends of the crib frame 14 are snap latches 25 adapted to engage in keeper plates 26 carried by the-head or foot pieces 18 and 21 of the cribthese latches constituting means for maintaining theihead and foot pieces in aetive Vvertical positions, thus preventing accidentalcollapse of the crib while in use.
. .The upper ends of the head or foot pieces 18,. and 21 are alsoV provided with latches to receive the endsy of the side rails 24and maintain saidrails in a vertical position on the/frame 14 as shownin Fig.`3. These latches are'inY the form of Jface plates 27 mounted over recesses 28 in the pieces 18 and 21. Each vface plate'has opposed pivoted beveled. spring pressed latch members 29Y held normally extended by a spring 30 mounted in the recess 28, said latch members permitting ofthe side rails 24 being swung porting -wall. if
into engagement therewith from either side, and either latchwmember may be manually depressed to release the side rail and permit ofl it being-lowered at eitherside of its sup- The face plate has the lower edge thereof provided vwith an angled keeper 31, to receive la hook shapedl member 32 carried by theendA of the yside framey 24, said member -y-andkeeper preventingrthe upper end ofY eitherfpiece 18 or 21 from swinging ontwardly, thus cooperating with the latches 25 1n preventing eollapseof the crib structure. In some instances, the head or foot pieces H1S-and'21 may bev provided'with latches engaged by the Vends of the side rails 24 to hold said rails in lowered positions at the outer sidesofthe crib frame 14;"
