To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'rro J. Bon'r'rorrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manitowoc, in the-county of Manitowoc and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in -Draw-.

The press is provided with a frameB' having a stationary horizontal press bed 4 at its lower part. The crosshead or ram of the press, which carries the drawing punch 6, is slidable in vertical guides? on the frame,
and is reciprocated by means of a connect ing-rod 8 and any suitable driving mechanism, all; of these Partsbeing of any'approved construction. j r
In re-drawing light. metal shells, and other similar articles, in presses of this sort, the shells sometimes buckle-up, wrinkle and tear, and the attachment hereinafter described is adapted to overcome these drawbacks, and improve the efiiciency of the machine.
Supportmg bars-9 are rigidly secured to theunderside of the crosshead 5, and project horizontally at the front and rear of the machine. Vertical rods 10 are arranged to slide in holes 11 inthe bars 9, and, have screwthreaded portions 12 at their upper ends Nuts 14 are screwed on the. rods 10 above the bars, so that the rods are suspendedfrom thebars 9, and jam nuts 15 are provided for locking the nuts l lafter the rods 10-h'avebeen adjusted in length.
The. lower end portions ofithe rods 10 are provided with extension rods 16, andv a sleeve holder 17 is secured to the rods 10 where they are connected to the extension rods 16. The sleeve holder 17 extends diagonally under the crosshead 5 of the press, and is arranged horizontally. The extension rods 16 may be solid metallic rods if desired,

that the sleeve holder 17 is clamped between the collars 19 and the upper ends of the extension rods. The sleeve holder may.how ever be rigidly connected to the rods 10 in any other approved manner.
A tubular sleeve 20 is secured to. the middle part of the sleeve holder and has a beveled portion 21 at its lower part. The drawpnnch is slidable in this sleeve, and in a hole 23 in the sleeve holder. A suitable die 22 is secured to the press bed for the drawing punch to engage with in the usual mannen The sleeve 20 slides Vertically with the crosshead 5 and the drawing punch 6, but the crossheadand punch have a longer stroke than the sleeve. The punch 6 slides downwardly in the sleeve when the latter is held stationary by contact with the wor r.
The extension rods 16 are slidable vertically in holes 24 in the press bed, and they have screwthreaded portions 25 at their upper parts. Split nuts 26 are screwed on the parts 25 above the press bed, and thesenuts form stops as will be more fully explained hereinafter. The split nuts 26 may be dispensed with, if desired. i
The extension rods 16 have sorewthreaded portions 28' at their lower ends, and are provided with adjusting nuts 29. Helical springs 30 are arranged around the lower parts of the extensionrods 16 between the nuts 29 and the press bed, and31 are cen' tering washers which. support the springs 30 on the extension rods.

The nuts 29 are ,then screwed on the extension rods, so as to compress the helical springs to apredetermined extent, and the press is ready to operate.
'The shell is placed between the die and the sleeve, when the sleeve and drawing 7 'punch are raised. its the crosshead is forced down, the sleeve entersltheshell and slides downwardly until it presses the shell against the die. The springs 30 are placed under considerable tension or compression when thecrosshead 5 is raised, and they press the v nuts-14 on the supporting'bars 9 until the beveled end 21 of the-sleeve 20 bears on the shell The springs 30, or other equivalent operating means, then hold the shell pressed against the stationary die with a constant and uniform pressure. This pressure prevents the shell from being distorted while it' s being drawn out by the drawing punch.
