Description

H. A. KELLER. CUSHIONED BUTTON FOR GARMENT'SUPPORTERS. APPLICATION F-ILED APR. 7. 1920.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN A. KELLER, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO KABO CORSET COMIANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF WEST VIRGINI CUSHIONED BUTTON FOR GARMENT-SUPPORTERS.
Application filed April 7, 1920.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN A. KELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Cushioned Buttons for Garment-Supporters, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the game, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that type of cushioned button upon which a stocking or other piece of wearing apparel. is held by means of a cooperating loop or the like and has for its object to produce a button of this kind which shall be strong and durable while at the same time of light and simple construction.
The various features of novelty whereby my invention is characterized will hereinafter be pointed out with particularity in the claims; but, for a full understanding of my invention and of its objects and advantages, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view, on a greatly enlarged scale, of a device arranged in ac cordance with the preferred form of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a section taken approximately on line 22 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a section through the base of,
the button taken approximately on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing, 1 represents a base member of sheet metal which may be of any usual or suitable construction. Rising from the middle of the base is a tubular shank, 2, open at the upper end. Surrounding the shank is a collet, 3, preferably of rubber, which forms the head'and neck of the button. In the top of the collet is an annular groove, 4, spaced apart from the inner cylindrical surface of the collet so as to leave an annular flange or ring, 5, adj acent to the tubular shank. The height of the shank is made greater than the height or thickness of the collet and the upper portion thereof is flanged outwardly and downwardly into the roove, 4, as indicated at 6, gripping the rlb, 5, firmly between the Specificationct Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 25, 1921.
Serial No. 371,866.
same and the main portion of the tubular shank; the extreme edge of the flange being turned inwardly, more or less, if desired, so as to insure that the gripped rib of the collet cannot be released by compressing the collet in the axial direction. In this way the collet is firmly held in place without danger of accidentally coming ofl.
The base and its tubular shank are preferably made out of a single piece of thin sheet metal. In order to stiffen the base so that it will be able to resist the stresses to which it is subjected in service, even though made of comparatively thin sheet metal, I prefer to flange over the metal which must be displaced in producing the slots or openings by which the base is attached to its support, instead of punching out such metal and discarding it.
In the arrangement shown, the base is of the type having a pair of elongated slots, 7, arranged on opposite sides of the shank. In forming these slots the metal is bent upwardly and laterally so as to form reinforcing flanges, 8, completely surrounding the slots, these reinforcing flanges lying flat upon the body portion of the base. The base may be further stiffened by embossing ribs or beads, 9, in the material thereof in those zones lying. between the two slots; the ele ments, 9, lying on opposite sides of the shank between and extending transversely of the slots.
While I have illustrated and described with particularity only a single preferred form of my invention, I do not desire to be limited to the exact structural details thus illustrated and described; but intend to cover all forms and arrangements which come within the terms employed in the definitions of my invention constituting the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a base plate having a tubular member open at the upper end projecting therefrom, a collet of cushioning material fitting around said member, said collet having a rib at the top thereof and lying adjacent to the central opening therein, the outer end of said tubular member being flanged outwardly and downwardly over said rib.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a base plate having a tubular member open at the upper end projecting therefrom, a collet surrounding the said member and resting on said base, said collet having an annular groove in the outer or top face thereof, and said member having its free outer edge flanged laterally and down- Wardlg into said groove.
device 01 the character described,
comprising a base plate-of sheet metal having a tubular member projecting at right angles to the plane thereof, a cushioning collet surrounding said tubular member, said base plate having slots therethrough, the material displaced to produce the slots being transformed into flanges surrounding the slots and lyin upon the adjacent portions of the base p ate.
4. A device of the character described, comprising a base plate of sheet metal having a tubular member projecting at right angles'to the plane thereof-,"a cushioning collet surrounding said tubular member, said base plate having slots therethrough on opposite sides of said tubular member, the material displaced to produce the slots being transformed into flanges surrounding the slots and lying upon the adjacent portions of the base plate, the metal or. the plate being embossed to form stiffening ribs between said slots.
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification.
HERMAN A. KELLER.
