Description

D. 8. WATTS.
Portable Fences.
Patented Mar ch11,1873.
I V I \NUENQOR murmur/1061mm co. NY.( wean/15k Pnocsss.)
NI'IED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID S. WATTS, OF CANTON, MISSISSIPPI.
lMPROVE MENT IN PORTA BLE FENCES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 36,630, dated March 11, 1673.
, this specification.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a view of the post in perspective. Fig.2 is section through the post.
A is a ground-sill, mortised or halved at a to receive the uprights B. .G is a cap-sill, at which the diagonal braces D terminate. The bottoms of Dare let into the ground-sill A at d. The cap-sill G is nailed or otherwisefastened to the tops of the uprights B, and covers the tops of the uprights and braces. The braces D are attached to the uprights B at the top, or may simply be spiked to the cap-sill (J and bear strongly against the uprights B.
The advantages of my invention are, first, that the cap forms a good tie for the uprights, at the same time protecting the ends of the uprights B and braces D from exposure to water, which in the ends of posts causes rapid decay. Second, the arrangement of the braces, springing from the cap-sill as they do, permits of them and the uprights also being made of lighter material than they could be constructed of if made on the plan of abutting against the uprights below the top. Third, the com-' bination forms one of lightness, durability, and simplicity.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The portable fence-post herein described, wherein the uprights B and diagonal braces D abut against and are secured to and covered by the cap-sill C, the whole being founded on the ground-sill A, provided with the mortise a and recesses d d, constructed, arranged, and operating in the manner substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 30th day of September, 1872.
' DAVID SHERRILL WATTS.
