Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
INTERLINE-TICKET GUIDE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
PatentedJ an. 18, 1921.
Application filed November 4, .1919. "seriaino. 335,705.
To allwhomit may concern:
Be it known that I, Oo'rAvn S. PAYZANT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a n'ew and useful Interline-Ticket Guide, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
' This invention relates to holding members or .guides for interline tickets of'railways and the like, and has for an object to ro vide an improved construction which can be used with any size ticket and hold same in proper position so that only one ticket can be removed at a time.
Another object in view is to provide a cabinet and holder or guide for either card board tickets or folded tickets wherein the tickets are held in proper place, but are capable of vending regardless of their thickness or number of folds.
A still further object in view is to provide a holder or guide for a ticket cabinet which will hold a stack of tickets of any height in proper shape and allow the tickets to be fed from the top time. v
In the accompanying drawlngz thereof one at a Figure 1 is a front view of the upper part of a cabinet with a holder or guide shown in connection therewith the same embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a holder or guide disclosing an embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view, on an enlargedscale, through Fig. 1 on line Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional view through Fig. 3 approximately on line 4, 4. Referring tothe accompanying drawing by numerals, 1 indicatesa cabinet provided with various compartments 2, provided by the walls of the cabinet 1 and the various partitions 3, each partition being provided with a series of slots 4 arranged preferably at an angle as indicated in Fig. 3. The va-v rious compartments 2 may extend for the full height of the cabinet or for part of said height as desired, and may receive a series of shelves 5 in any of the grooves 4. As shown at the left in Fig. 1 a number of the shelves 5 have been provided and different quantities of tickets 6 arranged there on, each set of tickets being supplied with a holder or guide 7 It will be noted that any desired number of tickets may be arranged on any shelf 5 and then a guide 7 provided on top of the stack of tickets for holding the tickets in proper place and allowing one ticket to be moved at a time.
The cabinet 1 and the partitions 3 in addition to'being provided with the slots 4 are provided with vertical grooves 8 for accommodating the guiding ears 9 on the guides 7 and also provided with cut out portions 10 and 11' for accommodating certain parts of the guides 7 as shown in Fig. 4. This guide is preferably stamped from one piece of metal, but if desired could be made from several parts and built up to the shape illustrated.
As shown in Fig. 2 the guide is made from one'piece of metal and is bent for producing a bottom 12 from which upstanding sides 13 and 14 extend, said sides slightly flaring so as to pinch'against the partitions 3. The material of which the guide is made is preferably metal, as for instance brass, and is consequently, resilient so that the sides 13 and 14 will properlygrip the sides of the various partitions 3, orone of the partitions and the'cabinet' 1. The bottom 12 is provided with a comparatively deep cut out portion or notch 15through which the fingers ofthe operator extend when it is desired toremove a ticket. Thesides 1 3 and 14 extend forwardly and'are bent over at 16 and 17 and are formed at the 'front with a card receiving section 18 and a'gripping tongue 19 which may be bent back or forth as desired for producing an adjustment to prevent more than one ticket from being'vended at a time. The section 18 is provided with a turned up flange 20 and with spurs 21 for holding a suitable card 22in place, said card having the name of a town placed thereon and the price of the ticket to said place. In bending the ends 16 and 17 offsets 23 and 24 are provided whereby the lower part of the bent ends 16 and 17 may fit into the notches 10 and 11 as shown in Fig. 1, whereby the rear edges 25 and 26 are offset from the inner faces of the respective partitions 3, so that a ticket passing outwardly cannot strike these edges. As shown in Fig. 4: the tongue 19 usually extends a short distance beyond the cient to cause the ticket to slide out over the operation;
tongue 19. The tongue 19 is originally set at proper position, or is bent to be in the way of a second ticket and thereby allow only oneticket to be vended at each vending The rear ends of the walls 13 and 14 are bent at 13 andle so that the guide may be easily inserted at any time.
It willbe noted thatthe side walls Band 1 1 are of some appreciable height. This is to allow space for the fingers when removing tickets. By this arrangement an upper shelf 5 cannot be placed any closer to a lower bunch of tickets than the top edge of the sides 13 and 14, thus leaving amplefspace for the fingers. As'the tickets are vended the rude 7 is 'raduall moved g a: y
downwardly following the tickets so that the guide is always resting on or pressing against the tickets so as to hold the same in proper place and at the same time permitting the vending ofone ticket at a time.
The guide 7 may be used when vending stiff card board tickets if desired, but is preferably used in connection with what is known'as nterl ne tickets in the railroad ticket selling agencies. The interline tickets are usually printed on comparatively thin paper and are comparatively long, for instance ranging from a few inches to six or eight feet. Heretofore large cabinets or racks were provided in which the tickets might be suspended vertically. This way of holding the tickets necessitated a large space and also caused the railroad companies to vend these long or interline tickets at specified windows, The present invention is intended to permit the vending of these long tickets at'anywindow and in a similar man ner as; though they were card board'tickets. The'tickets are folded until they properly fit in the various compartments 2 and are stackedin a folded condition on the respective shelves 5 after which the guides 7 are placed in position and pressed down on the stack of folded tickets. When any ticket is desiredthe ticket seller will place his finger on the top ticket through the notch 15 and press down and pull outwardly whereupon the top ticket will slide out and the remaining tickets will remain in place or beheld in place by the tongue 19 orsection 18.
