r 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that LVORRIN A. HANFORD, citizen of the United States, residing at Terre Haute, in the county of Vigo and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Hand- 'lools for Capping and Sealing Bottles, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to a portable hand tool for applying a sealing cap to the top portion orhead of bottles.
The prime object of this invention is to provide simple, durable, economical and efficient means adapted to he carried and manipulated in the hand of an operator, whereby a cap is seated on the top of a bottle, and securely attached and sealed to the head of the bottle.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the novel tool as to include a die member carried by a removable handle secured thereto, said die member beingprovided with means for holjding the cap on the top of a bottle until the upper end portion of the d e is struck a sharp blow with a hamuser or mallet which will force the die down wardly thereby causing the flaring corrugated flange formed on the cap to be drawn or compressed around the bead formed at the upper end ofthe bottle, whereby the cap is securely locked and sealed to the bottle top.
A further object of the invention is to provide means carried within the die member whereby the tool will be caused to readily release itself from the cap, thus preventing the breaking of the bottleneck.
The foregoing and such other objects as may appear from the ensuing description are attained "by the novel features of construction, arrangement, combination and location of parts hereinafter more fully described,

and particularly pointed outin the claims appended hereto, it'being understoodthat slight changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of the construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificingany of the advantagesof the invention.
Reference now being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification and in which similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, it will be seen that Figure 1, shows in vertical section the cap seated on a bottle head with the tool embodying myinvention above it and resting thereon.
Fig. 2, showsin vertical section a similar vview illustrating the. cap and tool as they appear upon the bottle, upon the conclusion of the-capping and sealing operation, and v Fig. 3, is a. perspective of the complete tool disconnected from the cap and bottle.
In carrying out my invention as illus trated, and which shows a preferred construction, the numeral 1 indicates the crown of the cap, 2 the skirt and 3 the annular flar ing corrugated flange; formed integral with said cap.
The numeral 4 designates the die member of my novel tool. said die being provided with an innerannular .wall tapered or beveled at 6 about a quarter of an inch upward and inward from the bottom edge thereof, said wall thenextending vertically upward, as shownat 7, and terminating with a horizontal inner solid top wall 8 formed with a semi-circular outer solid wall. therebyfornr ing a chamber within said die member for the reception o an annular slidablepunch 10 provided with a reduced body portion,
and an annular extension 11 formed at both its top and bottom. said extensions being adapted to have sliding engagement with the said vertical wall 7. the lower end portion of said punch 10 being provided with a slightly convex downward extension 12, adapted to contact with the upper surface of the crown portion of the cup, while the :upper flat surfaceof the punch is adapted to contact withthe lowersurface of a soft rubber washer 13 or a metallic spring 14, for the purpose hereinafter referred to.
The body-portion of the die member is providedwith an integral annular extension .5 with a screw threaded opening formed therethrough for, the reception of the screwthreaded end portion 17, of a rod 16 which is suitably and rigidly secured to the handle member 15, said screw threaded end portion of the rod'16 extending through the outer wall of the die member, and terminating between the upper and lower extensions 11, and into therecess formed by said extensions within, the inner chambered portion of the die member, the inner end of portion 17 being adapted to contact with the extensions 11, and serve as a stop to limit the sliding movement of the punch 10.
Fig. 1, illustrates the device as it appears on the top of a bottle before the sealing operation is performed, and showing the cap held on the top of the bottle with the convex end portion of the punch resting on the upper-surface of the cap and the screw-threaded end portion of the handle near the upper extension 11' of said punch, with the beveled ing in contact with its upper face to be compressed, and the screw-threaded end of the handle to rest near the lower extension 11 formed .on the punch, with the inner vertical walls of the die member. in contact with the outer surface of the skirt ofthe cap and the flaring corrugated portion of the cap forced inward around the bottom or lower portion of-the annular bead formed around the outer top portion of the bottle neck 9, thereby capping and tightly sealing the head or top of the said bottle. v
The handle is sufficiently short to permit thetool to be readily and easily manipulated "in the hand of an operator, and it will be observed that a simple, useful and economical means is provided, whereby, without requiring the use'of expensive machinery, a cap of the well known type and construction may be seated and securely sealed on the top or head portion of a bottle.
It will be understood that the several parts used inthe construction of my novel capping and sealing tool may be made of any suitable or desirable material adapted to perform the desired and requiredfunctions;
Itwill be perceived that when the die member is forced to the position shown in Fig. 2, the spring or the rubber washer will be compressed, hence the reaction of said spring or washer will have a tendency to readily release the die member from contact with thecap and avoid the breaking of the bottle neck'or top portion thereof.

A portable hand tool of the character described, comprising a die member pro vided with an inner tapered and vertical wall, a slidable punch provided with an annular extension formed at the top and bottom thereof adapted to engage said vertical wall, said punch having a flat upper surface and a convex lower surface, resilient. means resting in contact with the upper surface of said punch and the upper wall of the die member, and a screw-threaded handle portion extended through the die member between the extensions formed on the punch and adapted to limit the sliding movement of the punch.

A portable hand tool of the character described, comprising a die member formed with an inner tapered and vertical wall and an outer semicircular solid. wall. a slidable punch having a reduced body portion and an annular extension formed around its top and bottom portion, and having a lower convex face, said punch being adapted to slidably engage the said vertical wall within the die member, resilient means resting in contact with the upper face of the punch and in contact with the upper wall of the die member, and a screw-threaded handle portion fitted through a screw-threaded opening formed through the outer wall of the die with its inner end resting between said extensions formed on the punch and adapted to limit the sliding movementof the punch.

A portable hand tool of the character described, comprising a die member formed with an inner tapered and vertical straight wall and an outer integral annular extension formed around its body portion, a slidable punch within the die member having a reduced body portion and an annular integral extension formed around its upper and lower portion, said punch having a flat upper surface and a convex lower surface, resilient means resting between the upper face of the punch and the upper wall. of the die memher, and a screw-threaded. handle portion fitted within a screw-threaded opening formed through said outer extension of the. die member and its wall with the inner end of said handle portion terminating within the die member between the annular extensions formed on said punch and adapted to limit the sliding movement of the punch.
