HARRY w. LOWE, or mnreuaron s, runrana, .assreuonpnr MESNE ASSIGN- IVIENTS, TO INDIANA CANNING A CORPORATION OF INDIANA.
PULPING-MACHINE.
To all 101 1-0772 it may concern:
Be "it known that I, HARRY V. Lown, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and tate of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Pulping-Machine, of which the fol lowing is a specification. l
It is the object of my inventionto provide a pulping machine construction which can be easily opened so as to give access to all the internal parts and thus facilitate cleaning and promote the maintenance of sanitar conditions, which when in operation is e fective to produce pulping throughout its entire circumference, and from which the discharge of the refuse after pulping is obtained peripherally by centrifugal force so as to minimize the danger of clogging and provide an easier control of the discharge.
In carrying out these objects, I provide a pulping machine in which the pulping screen is made of two separate parts having hinge mountings so that they may be opened to give access to the inside of the screen and to the working parts within the screen; and I provide a pulping screen above as well as below the horizontal plane through the axis of the structure, so that the juices and pulp may be forced through the screen throughout its circumference; andI provide at the discharge end of the structure one or more peripheral openings the size of which is suitably controlled, from which openi'ngsthe refuse after the pulping operationis discharged by the action of centrifugal force.
The accompanying drawing illustrates my invention. a n
Figure l is a perspective view of a pulping machine embodying my invention, with the cover removed and the two-part screen opened; Fi 2 is a transverse vertical section through the refuse-discharge head, taken the drain pan.
substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a partial section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2; and 1* 1g. 4 is a transverse section through the pulping machine, showing the two-part screen closed and the removable cover in place, but omittingthe frame and A supporting frame 10 supports the two end members 11- and 12 in any suitable manner, and also has bearings 13 for a shaft 14,
which is provided with suitable arms 15 carrying; the paddles .16. The intake end MACHINERY ,COJ OE INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA Specification Letters Patent.
Y memberisannular, topermit the supplying preferably below the shaft 14; and on these two hinge rods arepivotally mounted the carrying frames 21 oftwo semi-cylindrical screens'22. The frames are provided with any suitable latching devices 23 for holding their upperedges togetherwhen desired, so
that the two semi-cylindrical screens will together form a complete cylindrical screen inclosing the shaft lt and paddles 16 and close to the inside surfaceof which the pad- .dles 16 travel when the shaft 14 is rotated.
By releasing the latches 23, the two semicylindrical screens may be swung apart abouttheir hinge mountings on the hinge rods 20,- as illustrated in 1, so as to give ready access to the inside surface of the screen andto the parts inclosed by the screen. The two: end members are provided with annular shoulders 24:, upon which the curved end edges of the screen-carrying frames 21 h ar when the screen is closed as shown in Fig 4(so as to provide substantially tight I joints between such screen-carrying frames and the end members. a
The endmember lQ at thedischarge end of the machine is provided with one or more peripheral discharge openings 2. located between the end wall 26 of such end member and an intermediate outwardly projecting "flange 27 from which the annular flange which provides the shoulder 24 proiects.
These peripheral discharge openings 25 are conveniently located substantially opposite eachother. in about the horizontal plane of the shaft 14, and are provided with adjustablecurved gate valves 28 by whih the sizes of such openings may be adjustedand either openingmaybe completely closed. The
openings 25 preferably it are continued through outwardly projecting chutes, of which part of the walls are formed by continuations of the endlwall 26 and flange 27.
Below the screen cylinder and its support- Patented J an. 18, 1921. Application filed December 31, 1918. Serial No. 269,146.
ing hinge rods 20 and supported in. any suitsupport a removable cover 33, which retains the pulp and juice thrown out through the screen 22 and guide such pulp and juice downward to the drain pan.
yIn operation, the two semi-cylindrical screen parts are closed to form a complete cylindrical screen, and the cover 33 is in place, asillustrated in Fig. 4-. The material to be Jul aed such as ve etables or fruit is supplied 'to 'the interior. of the screen 22,
through any suitable devices or mechanism,
which may be simply the feed hopper .18
leading to the feed-opening 17. After this -mater1al reaches the inside of the cylindrical screen, the shaft 14 being in operation, such material is agitated by the moving paddles l6 and thrown outward thereby against 7 the inside surfaceof thecylindrical screen 22 tocause juice and pulp from such material to be forced out through the screen. The paddles 16 travel sufliciently close to the inside surface' of this screen so that they also positively force pulp and juice from the material outward through the screen. The
pulp and juice are thus forced out through the screen throughout the circumference thereof, and are caught by the cover and directed downwardly thereby through the opening in ther'ectangular frame members 32 into the drain pan 30, whence the juice and pulp are drawn off through the discharge opening-31. The refuse which is not I i5v .by the centrifugal action produced by the forced outthrough the screen 22 works down toward the end member 12 at the discharge end of the machine, being continuously held out against the inside periphery of the screen paddles '16.' When this refuse reaches the end member 12, itis thrown by this same centrifugal force outward through the peripheral openings'25 oreither of them, ac-
cord-ingBto whether one or both of them are open. y adjusting the gate valves '28, the discharge of the refuse is controlled, so that such discharge is retarded to any extent necessary to produce the desired qualities in the'refuse'and in the pulp and juice. By
9 closing the gates 28 to a greater extent, the discharge of the refus'eis more greatly retarded so that it 1s maintainedin the ma chine longer and is drier when discharged,
jbecau sej more of the liquid and the softer matter is forced outward through the screen 7 and caught ln the dram pan.
When the pulping operation is over, and
- he mach ne i s p ed, c a can be stantially horizontal shaft cnrryi readily obtained by removing the cover 22") and opening the two semi-cylindrical scrccn parts, thus giving access to the inside surface of the screen and to all the working parts.
