To on whom it may com-em Be it known that I, Howann F. SNYDER, a citizen of the United States. residing at Newton, in the county of Jasper and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machine Tubs, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to washing machine tubs and has reference, more particularly, to the bottom portion of the tub and the surfaces of the gratator, located near the lower ortion of the tub, and the bottom of the tu Among the objects of the invention is to provide a construction so that the to surface of the gyratator and the top sur ace of the bottom of the tub will be even and form a substantially smooth continuous surface over'which the materials to be washed may pass without catching upon the gyratator or' the bottom of the tub and without causing any damage to the material; to so construct the device that the materials, such as clothing, lace curtains and delicate fabrics being washed, will be prevented from getting an der the gyra'tator and clogging the operation of the same, or catching on any other part of the machine; and such further objects, advantages, and capabilities as will later more fully appear and are inherently possessed by the invention.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the invention is shown as comprising a tub 1 which may be of any suitable shape, whether circular, square or other form and having vertical side walls 2, to the upper rim portion of which is attached a top member 3 by means of any suitable fastening members such as rivets 4. The top mem; her 3 slants downwardly toward .the middle of the to to an opening 5 which may be suitably c osed by a cover or closing memher 6, conveniently connected to the top member 3 by means of a hinge connection 7, as clearl' shown in Figure 1 of the drawing. On I; e other side of the cover from that to which the hinge 7 is connected is formed a depression 8 in which is located a rigid or integral lug 9 adapted to be manually grasped for the purpose of opening and closing the cover 6, as desired. At the lower portion of this tub,- as shown in Fig. 1, is formed an inclined or oblique wall portion 10 extending downwardly to the bottom portion 11 which is preferably horizontal and has an inner margin 12 located closely adjacent to the outer margin 13 of a gyratator 14. From the inner margin 12 of the bottom 11 is a depending portion or flange 15 which connects with an inner inclined o1- obli ue portion 16 leading to a flange 17 to whidli is connected, in any suitable manner, a drain late 18, the drain plate 18 being formed wit an inclined bottom extending to a drain opening 19, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing.
The gyratator 14 is formed at its central portion with a conoidal central ortion 20, avlng a depending socket mem er 21 fitting upon a sleeve 22 secured to a vertical shaft 23 by means of a cross pin 24. The shaft 23 extends downwardly through the drain plate 18, which is preferably provided with a packing box and bearing 25 extending upwardly from the drain plate 18 and around the shaft portion between the sleeve 22 and late 18. Within the packing and bearing ox 25 is suitable bearing material such as babbit 26 and packing materials 27 for preventing leakage of the washing li uid about the shaft as well as aiding in In ricatin the shaft. To the lower portion of the aft is secured a spur pinion 28 by means of a cross pin 29. This inion is of utility to be connected with a suitable oscillating or alternately movable rack operated by t e power mechanism of the washing machine. A suitable cap 38 may be provided to-close the upper end of the gyratator or covering the upper end of sleeve 22.
The to wall of the gyratator extends .downwar ly from the central portion of the gyratator, then radially outwardly and then upwardly to its circular margin 13 which is located adjacent the margin 12 of the bottom 11 of the tub. The gyratator ma also be rovided with a plurallty of radia y extenging vertical flanges 39 which are preferably formed inte a1 with the remainder of the gyratator. uch gyratator is preferably formed of cast aluminum.
It will be noted that the outer margin of the gratator and the inner margin 12 of the bottom portion 11 of the tub, are located adjacent to each other and substantially upon the same level so that the lower cur-ved ortion 30 of the to of the gyratator wili extend substantia y in the same direction as the bottom of the tub and form therewith a substantially smooth continuous surface. In this way it will be observed that the materials being washed in the washmachine, and which are caused to ass *ally from the center of the mac ine over the atator toward the side walls of the tub, will pass smoothly from the curved portion 20 over the margins 13 and 12 of the ratator and tub respectively, and upwardly along or by the side wall portion 10 and the side wall 2 of the tub, without the materials being in any way damaged, or injured or becoming caught on any part of the tube or passing beneath the gyratator.
It will be noted that the lower inclined portion 16 of the tub, together with the drain plate 18, form a depression in the bottom of the tub in which the gyratator is operatively located so that the top surface of the gymtator will be even with the top surface of the bottom portion 11 of the tub.
In the tub as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing the construction is substantially the same as that described in Fig. 1, and all similar parts are designated by the same reference characters. Instead of having an inclined portion 10 and a narrow bottom portion 11,.
as shown in Fig. 1, the side wall 2 of the tub extends downwardly to a corner portion 31 extending inwardly to the horizontal or flat portion 32 of the tub, the portion 32 having the inner margin 12 located adjacent the outer mar 13 of the gyratator. It will also be noted t at the depression of the bottom of the tub is more shallow than in the form shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, and that the top surface of the gyratator has a more nearly fiat portion 33 in lieu of the curved portion 30 of the form shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The portion 33 of the ratator and the bottom 32 of the tub will orm a substantially continuous flat surface, the inner margin of the ratator and the outer margin of the tub being located adjacent to each other.
In the operation of the device the gyratator is preferably ]given an alternate rotary movement orosci ation, and the contents of the tub, including the washing materials, and the materials to be washed thereby, are acted upon in such a way that the materials will pass from the central portion of the tub over the ratator toward the side walls of the tub an upwardly toward the upper portion of'the tub, and then inwardly toward the middle portion of the tub and then downwardly toward the gyratator. During this movement it is highly important that none of the materials being washed, pass beneath the gyratator or become jammed or 010 ged in between the ed eof the gyratator an the bottom portion 0% the tub, -yet the washing material should have access to the draining portion of the tub in order that it, with the soil, may flow over the drain plate to the drain port 19. The drain port 19 may be closed by any suitable closing means, or connected in any suitable manner to a hose connection or the like so that the drain water may be drained oil as desired. I
While I have herein described and shown upon the drawings two embodiments of the invention, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific construction, details and arrangements of parts shown and described, but that other constructions, details, and arrangements of parts are comprehended by the invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
The construction herein set forth is an improvement on that described and claimed in my prior pending application Serial No. 568,158, filed June 14, 1922.
Having now described my invention, I claim 1. In a washing machine, a'tub having a bottom, a gyratator operable near said bottom, the top surfaces of said gyratator and said bottom forming a smooth substantially continuous surface.
2. In a washing machine, a tub having a flat bottom, a gyratator operable near said bottom. the top surfaces of said gyratator and said flat bottom forming a smooth substantially continuous surface.
3. In a washing machine, a tub having a bottom provided with a depression in said bottom, a gyratator operable in said depression, the top surfaces of said gyratator and said bottom forming a smooth substantially continuous surface.
4. A washing machine, a tub having a bottom provided with a circular de ression therein, a circular gyratator operab einsaid depression, the upper surfaces of the adjacent ortions of said gyratator and said bottom orming a smooth substantially continuous surface.
5. In a washing machine, a tub having a bottom provided with a de ression therein, a gyratator operable in sai depressions, the outer margin of said gyratator and the inner margin of said bottom being located adjacent to each other whereby the materials be- ....\mmming washed pass smoothly from the upper surface of the gyratator to the upper surface of the bottom.
6. In a washing machine, a tub having a bottom provided with a circular depression therein, a circular gyratator operable in said depression, the outer margin of said gyratator and the inner margin of said tub bottom being adjacent to each other whereby the passage of the contents of the tub from the substantial] the same plane.

In a washing machine-tub provided with a recess having an outer vertical wall, asubstantially circular agitator seated in said recess and having a beaded, edge adapted to lie closel adjacent to the upper e go of the aforesaid vertical wall, the upper surface of the agitator being formed with upstanding wings whereby when the agitator is turned the materials to be washed are agitated.' v
