N0. 136,587, PatentedMarchH,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcE.V
ALFRED CLARKE, oE PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAT AND PARCEL HOLDERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,587, dated Marth 11, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED CLARKE, of the city of Philadelphia and State ot' Pennsylva nia, have invented certain Improvements in Portable Hat and Parcel Holders, ot' which the following is a specification:
My invention is intended chieiiy for holding hats or other articles or parcels in railroad cars, as a matter of convenience and to prevent their being mashed or otherwise injured.
The invention, in the first place, relates to a spring-clasp in a single piece, bent into a circular form, with the ends brought together to provide for clasping articles between them, or so that when they are sprung apart the same may be held within their inclosure. The clasp is provided with a hook, by means of which it may be hung up; or the article to be held may be connected with the hook, a rib of the ceiling or other fixed part 0f the car, or fixture of the same, being clasped by the ends of the spring: The invention, in the second place, relates to the combination of two elastic straps with the sides of the clasp, one end ot' each strap being connected thereto by means of a rivet or otherwise. The free ends ofthe straps are provided with hooks, so that after the straps are brought around a parcel the hooks may be locked together to hold it securely; or the hooks may be used for holding the article and suspending it. v
Figure 1 of the drawing' represents an isometrical View of the improved holder. Fig. 2 is a front view without the straps E E.
A is a spring-clasp, made of a strip ot steel, which is bent into a circular form, and has clasping ends a a, which, in the present case, are represented as sprung on a rib, O, of a car. l) is a hook in the middle of the clasp, which may be used either for holding an article or for connect-ing with a fixed object, the article, in the latter case, being held by the clasping ends of the spring A, or Within its inclosure, or by one .or bot-h of the hooks b b on the free ends ofthe straps E E. The other ends of the straps are fastened, by means ot'rivets c c 0r otherwise, t0 the clasp A.
The improved holder is susceptible of being used in a variety ot' Ways for connection with articles to be held, and in the modes of suspension.
I claim as my invention- 1. The spring-clasp A, made of a single strip of metal, bent into a circular form, and provided with a hook, D, substantially in the manner and for the purpose above described.
2. The combination ofthe elastic straps E E with the spring-clasp A, the straps having hooks b b, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
ALFRED CLARKE. Witnesses:
