APPARATUS FOR TREATING ARTICLES WITH LIQUID.
Application filed April 15, 1920.
To all w ho m it may concern Be it known that I, ENOCH W. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for TreatingArticles with Liquid, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to machines for treating articles or piece goods of textile or other material, with liquid, such as water or water impregnated with dye-stuff, chemicals or other similar substances; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through a machine constructed according to this invention. Fig. 2 is an end view showing the preferred form of driving mechanism. Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the machine, taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of a portion of one of the perforated partitions.
A suitable supporting frame 4 is provided, and 5 is a barrel provided with trunnions 6 which are journaled in bearings 7 on the frame. This barrel may be a straight cylindrical vessel, or it may be of larger diameter at its middle part than at its ends, like an ordinary flour barrel, or it may be of various other shapes. The barrel 5 is provided with a charging door 8 on one side for the admission and removal of the goods or articles to be treated, together with the liqIl id to be applied to them.
If desired, valves 12 may be arranged in the liquid spaces 14 at the end portions of the partitions, to permit the liquid to pass rapidly by gravity from the middle chamber of the barrel into the spaces 14 when Specification of Letters Patent.

said spaces are in their lowest positions, and when the perforations are partially obstructed by the goods. The partitions may also be movable in guides 13 so that they operate as valves, or may do so in addition to having valves.
The barrel is revolved intermittently by any approved driving devices. Intermittent gearing is preferably provided, and 15 is an intermittent toothed pinion secured on one of the lll'lll'llllOllS 6. An intermittent toothed wheel 16 is secured on a shaft 1.? which is journaled in bearings 18 on the frame. This wheel 16 gears into the pinion 15, and it has a toothless portion 19 on its periphery which engages with toothless portions or dwells 20 on the pinion. The dwells 20 are arranged to correspond with the partitions of the barrel. The shaft 1'? is driven by any suitable motor, or by hand,
barrel is turned on its axis for one-half a revolution. This permits the valves to close, when valves are used, and raises the liquid to the upper side of the barrel. The articles to be treated drop onto the lower partition, and the toothless portion of the wheel then engages with the other dwell on the pinion, so that the barrel remains stationary while the liquid descends onto 'the articles from the perforations of the uppermost partition. The liquid passes by gravity through the articles, and accumulates in the liquid space below the lowermost partition. This operation is repeated until the articles have been treated by the liquid to the requisite extent, and the articles are then removed through the door opening.
An outlet 21 is provided for letting the used liquid out of the barrel, and is closed by any suitable means when the machine is at work. The perforated partitions are preferably made troughshaped in cross-section to increase the area, and work the articles toward the middle part of the barrel. The valves are arranged at the end portions of the partitions, and are provided with guards 24: to prevent the articles from obstructing the openings pertaining to them.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a barrel for articles and liquid provided with perforated partitions arranged longitudinally on opposite sides of its axis, of means for revolving the barrel intermittently and holding it stationary while the liquid descends through the articles from one partition to the other.
2. The combination, with a barrel for articles and liquid provided with perforated partitions arranged longitudinally on opposite sides of its axis, oi a revoluble driving shaft, an intermittent toothed wheel secured on the driving shaft and having a toothless portion at its periphery, and an intermittent toothed pinion secured to the barrel and provided with toothless portions or dwells arranged to correspond with the said partitions and operating to hold the barrel stationary at predetermined intervals.
3. The combination, with a barrel for articles and liquid provided with perforated partitions arranged longitudinally on opposite sides of its axis, said partitions being channel-shaped in cross-section to increase their area, of means for revolving: the barrel intermittently and holding it stationary while the liquid descends through the articles from one partition to the other.
l. The combination, with a barrel for urtieles and liquid provided with perforated partitions arranged longitudinally on opposite sides of its axis, said partitions being provided with valves which permit the liquid to pass downwardly from the middle part or the barrel into the liquid spaces when at their lower positions, of means for revolving the barrel intermittently and holding it stationary while the liquid descends through the articles from one partition to the other.
5.
