Be it known that I, HARRY MAnGUmEs, a citizen of Poland, residing at New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Locks, of which the following is a full clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in locks, more particularly pad-locks, one of the objects being to provide a lock ot' this nature that cannot be easily picked or operated without an especiallyv arranged key. Other features of improvement `will hereinafter appear.
I will now proceed to describe my invention in detail, the novel features of which I will nallyvclaim, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part hereof, wherein- Figure 1 illustrates my improved lock in elevation;
Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view thereof, the section being taken on a line 2-2 in Fig. 3;
Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical sectional View., the section being taken on a line 33 in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged 'vertical sectional 'view of the key;
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view of a ortion of the tumbler mechanism; and
ig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional diagrammatic view illustrating the application ot' the key to the lock.
My improved lock is made up of a casing or barrel portion 7, which contains the leek mechanism, a shackle member 8, consisting of leg members 9 and 10 connected at one end, as at 11, means to lock the shackle member, and a key 12 to operate the mechanism 'for actuating certain elements or tumblers to lock the shackle against movement or withdrawal fromthe barrel.
It will be `seen that `the leg members 9 and are not of the same length, the member 9 being the longer and eslidablysupported by a tubular pillar 13 located between disks 14 and l5. The disks 14 and 15 are connected and maintained, separated by means of postmembers 16, 17 and 18. As will be seen the leg 9 of the shackle passes through an opening 19 in the disk 14, said opening alining with the bore of the tubular pillar 13. The opening 19 is somewhat smaller in diameter than the bore of said pillar to provide an abutment 19A for a collar 20 carried by the leg 9, at its lower end. The legmembmfdtl. of the shackle extendsthrough an opening in a head-plate 23 when said shackle locked. The head-plate 23 is sccured to the barrel 7 by means o1 screws 24 or otherwise. The leg-me1nber 9 of the shackle passes through an opening 25 in the head-plate 23. The shackle 8 islocked or held in depressed position by means of a tumbler or latch 26 carried by a tubular post 27 rotatably supported by the disks 14 and 15. The latch or tumbler engages a notch 28 in the shackle leg-member 9. o The latch or tumbler 26 is in turn operated by means of an arm 29 carried. by a pin 3l) slidably 'supported by the post 27. The pin 30, at its lower end, is bifurcated as at 31 to engage a plate 32 slidably supported in slots 33 formed in the post 27, adjacent to the upper end thereof. The pin is ar ranged to be moved 'vertically against the tension of a spring 34 to elevate the arm 29 to cause the pin 35 carried thereby to be come disengaged `from an opening 36 in the disk 14, said pin freely passing through an opening 37 in the latch or tumbler When arm 29 is in depressed position, (see Fig. 3), the pin will be engaged with opening 36; hence latch 26 cannot be moved out of notch 28 and the shackle cannot be raised to cause the short leg 10 to clear heacbplate 28. The latch is maintained in.
engagement with said notchby a spring 38 .carried by a plate 39 pivotally supported in this instance, by postlS. The tension of spring 38 maintained by said plate 39 which at its free end bears against the casing 7 when the mechanism is in position within `the casing. The tubular post 27 carries a slidable pin 40 which is maintained in depressed position by a sp1-ing 41, said pin sliding within a reduced portion 41rl of the bore of the post, said bore being provided with a slot 42 to receive the latch 43 of the key 12. The. key 12 consists of a tubular member 44 carrying a fixed post 45, surrounded by a spring 46. The post 45 is tubular and pivotally supports the latch 43 which is normally pressed outwardly by a spring 48.
To unlatch the shackle, the tubular member 44 will be inserted through the opening 49 in the bottom of the casing and over the tubular post 2l' and forced upwardly in Contact with a slidable sleeve 50 on said post 2T. further upward movement will ,torce sleeve 5t) upwardly into contact with the head 5l on plate 82, and finally will move arm 29 upwardly (see dotted lines F ig. 5), thereby withdrawing pin 35 from opening` 86. At about this time, latch a3 will engage slot l2 in post 2, after which the key can be rotated, causing latch 26 to leave slot 2S. rlhe shackle will now be in condition to be raised to become disengaged .from any element to which it is attached. lWhen the tubular body member #lll of the key is ioreed upwardly lover the post 27, spring Li6 in the tubular member 4awill be compressed, thereby permitting` the fixed tubular post 45 to force pin Ll0 upwardly to uncover the slot a2 (see F ig. 6). When the key is withdrawn springs and ll will restore the respective parts to normal position. To lock the shackle it is rst necessary to force it downwardly, after alining the short leg l0 and opening 22 to cause notch 28 to aline with latch 26, whereupon the spring 38 will torce the said latch into said notch and lock the shackle.
Having described my: invention, what l claim is:
l. ln a lock, a casing, a shackle carried thereby, a pivotal locking latch tc engage the shackle, means to lock the latch against movement when in engagement with the shackle and a tubular key arranged to be inserted into said casing to actuate the latch locking means to release the latch and also to move the latch upon its pivot to unlocked position after said latch has been released.
2. In a lock, a casing, a shackle carried thereby, a tubular oscillatable post within the casing, a latch carried thereby arranged to engage said shackle, means adjacent the latch arranged to lock the latch against movement when it is in engagement with the shackle, a tubular key arranged to be slipped over said post, and means carried by the key to engage said post and rotate same, said key being arranged to release the latch locking means.
3. In a lock, a easing, a shackle carried thereby, a tubular oscillatable post within the casing, a latch carried thereby arranged to engage said shackle, an arm superimposed upon said latch, said arm being slidably supported, in a vertical plane, by said tubular post, means carried by the arm to engage the latch and lock same against movement, a. tubular key to engage said post and partly rotate same to cause said. latch to become released from said shackle, said key being also arranged to actuate said arm to release said latch before said post is operated.

ln a lock, a casing, a shackle carried thereby, a tubular oscillatable post within the casing, a latch carried thereby arranged to engage said shackle, an arm superimlii'ised upon said latch, said arm being slidably snpported, in a vertical plane, by said tubular post, means carried by the arm to engage the latch and lock same against movement, a pin slidably mounted within said post, said post having a slot normally covered by lsaid pin, a key consisting of a tubular body inember arranged to be slipped over said post and moved longitudinally thereof, means carried by the post to coperate with said key to actuate said latch-locking means, means carried by said key body member to move the pin within said post to uncover the slot therein when said key is moved along said tubular post sulliciently to release said latch locking means, and means carried by the key body member to engage the slot in the tubular post whereby said post may be partly rotated to release said latch.
6. ln a lock, a casing member, a shackle member, a support therefor, a movable latch, a releasable locking pin to engage the latch and the support :lor the latch to lock the latch against movement, and a key member arranged to first move the locking pin out et engagement with the support lor the latch and then to operate the latch.
