Belitknown that I, HIRAM TYRE, a citizen of the United States, and residing in the city, county, and State of N e/w York, have invented new and useful Improvements jin Burial-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is adapted for -either a casket or as the casket container; it particularly relates, however, to a casket container. The object of my invention is to provide a `vention comprises initially, separate sides,

This rim, or each of the rim members, if separate members or sections are used `for the different edges, comprises a channel member, the longer leg 7 of which i's embedded well within the vitreous material substantiallyparalll with. the faces or upper or lower surfaces of the cover 1. This leg 7 may be provided with barbs 8 ,tolsecure afirmer grip in the vitreous material; these barbs may be punched l up from the material of the leg 7. The web 9 of the channel or channels which comprise the' rim or rims of the cover l, is so disposed that its exterior face is substantially in the i same. plane as the exterior edge of the vitreous material adjacent thereto, as appears in Fig. 3; thus the channel rim and the vitreous material provide substantially a single sur face for the edge of the cover 1. The shorter leg 10 of the channel rim likewise lies in a surface of the cover 1, that is, in the lower face thereof and its outer surface is substantially in the plane of the lower surface of the vitreous material of the cover 1. As may be observed from Figs. 3 and 6, the leg or legs 10 provide engaging, seating, surfaces of the cover 1, that is, the surfaces which engage with the sides of the caseand on which the cover is seated. Each of the sides 2 is likewise provided with a metallic rim about its edges; the sides are further provided with embedded reinforcements. In the instance illustrated the rim members and the reinforcing for each side are comprised f in a unitary structure, which is illustrated in Fig. 5. Referring first to Fig. 3, it will be observed that the top and bottom metallic strips or rim members comprise T-sliapes. The webs of the Ts provide the whole, or substantially the whole, exterior surfaces of the top 'and bottom edges of the sides 2.

The outer flange of the T along the top edge of each side, lies within the respectively adjacent surface of the vitreous material of the sidesubstantially as the flange or leg 10 of the channel member lies within the lower face or surface of the cover 1; the outer flange of the T along the lower edge lies in arecess (later referred to again) in the outer surface of the vitreous material and extending the whole length of the side; the central flange of each T member is embedded within the vitreous` material of the sid'e. The central flanges may be provided with barbs as illustrated with respect to the leg or flange 7 of the rim of the cover.V Along each end of each side 2 there is placed a channelmember 12, one leg of which is disposed in a recess (later referred to again) ,in the outer surface of the vitreous matecircling wires or rods 12b embedded in the vitreous material along the-ends thereof, to assist in retaining the channel members in the vitreous material. For convenience of manufacture, the two T members and the two channel members 12 may be fixed `together into a rectangular structure (Fig. 5), in their relative positions in the finished structure, prior to the molding of the vitreous material thereabout. Also for convenience of manufacture or otherwise, the reinforcements 13 of each side may be lixed to the structure provided by the rim members, as shown in Fig. 5. Preferably and particularly where the sides of the case are made up of a transparent vitreous material whereby the contents of the case are visible, the reinforcement comprises a plurality of vertical bars 13 spaced sonie distance apartl in order-to allow as uninterrupted a view of the interior through the sides, as possible. Thesf` bars are preferably provided with barbs 1-1 punched up therefrom, as shown in Fig. These bars are also adapted to receive threaded bolts later referred to, these bolts to be inserted from the interior ofthe burial case. For this purpose, particularly on account of the thinness of the material of the bars 13, l prefer to provide the bars 13 with threaded sections or -studs 15 fixed thereto and projecting therefrom toward the inner surface of the side 2. The cover 1, two sides 2, two ends 3, and the bottom 4 are assembled as a box with the sides 2 and ends 3 resting on the upper surface of the bottom l, as appears in Figs. 3 and 6. The sides 2 are'placed between the ends 3 as appears from Fig. 2. lt will be observed from Figs. 2,3 andv 6 that the metallic rims orl strips provide the engaging or seating surfaces of and between the ends and sides,l between the' ends and bottom,
lbetween the sides andbottom,` and between the cover, sides and ends; Yin other words, metallic surfaces of the sides 2 and ends 3 stand ori-metallic surfaces of the bottom 4, metallic surfaces of sides 2 abut metallic surfaces .of the ends 3, and likewise metallic surfaces of the cover 1 rest on metallic surfaces of the sides and ends 2 and 3. Also by reason of the T and channel construction of these metallic strips, tlieseengaging surfaces are firmly and hermetically fixed to the vitreous ,material and metallic surfaces are exposed at both sides of each joint. hese engaging metallic surfaces of different parts of the case, orrather the exposed adjacent metallic surfaces,are soldered (using that term broadly), as-shown at 20, 21, 22, 23
. and 24, whereby all the joints of the case are liermetically sealed :and are readily and `easily hermetically sealed by Va simple operation. The joints, excepting those at the cover, may be soldered internally as at 21 and 24, if desired, as well as externally.
Provisions are made for preventing the destruction of the exposed rparts of the metallic strips by the weather. As will be seen from Figs. 2, 3. and 6, cooperating recesses (heretofore mentioned) are provided in the exposed edges and surfaces ofthe sides,. ends andbottom 2, 3 and 4 along their mutually engaging edges. 'It is in these recesses that the respective metallic strips or rims are exposed outside the joints, and it is also within these recesses that the external soldering is done at 20, 22, etc., between the sides, ends and bottom. After the soldering is completed the exposed surfaces of the metallic rims and the soldering thereon are covered with a suitable imperis'hable material impervious to the weather, that is, one which is incapable of being acted von by the i i elements or which otherwise restrains access of the elements to the metallicstrips and.

In addition to the natural strength possessed by the case by reason of the particular' assembly described, by reason of the soldering, etc., the case is preferably carried and strengthened andthe ends and sides further supported, as it were, by the external metallic frame 29. This carryingandfend-andside-supporting frame 29 comprises gener-v ally an open frame of box-likeconfiguration,`
preferably metallic, surrounding the case; it extends below the case to receive the vweight .thereof and in 'order that the case may be safely carried through the frame. The frame illustrated comprises alowergrim 31 surrounding the entire lower edgeof the case ,and provided with a horizontal flange 32 `and a vertical flange 33 integral there' with. The case rests on the flange 32; and

Preferably, and especially when the case is made of a'transparent vitreous mate- 40 rial whereby the contents of the case are visible, a vertical bar 34 is provided along each of the embedded reinforcing bars 13; these vertical bars, both at the corners and along the faces of the case, are of suiiicient width to conceal from. view the vertical metallic rim strips and the vertical reinforcements 13, whereby a pleasanter and apparently more complete structure results. Certain ofthe vertical bars 34 are provided with threaded bolts 38 to receive handles 39 by which the frame, and therethrough the case, be carried. It will be understood, however, that this embodiment is merely illustrative of my invention and that myl invention is not limited thereto, but that my'invention which I desire toA secure by Letters Patent is set forth in the following claims:
l. A burial case vcomprising sides, ends and bottom of separate pieces of fctile material, each of said pieces having a metallic rim partially embedded therein and the adjacent rims being soldered together to hermetically seal the joints.
2. A burial case comprising sides, ends and bottom of separate pieces of vitreous material having metallic strips partially inclosed in their edges, the said metallic strips providing the mutually engaging surfaces of the separate pieces and being soldered together to hermetically seal the joints.
