Description

I'Ulvrrun STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NELSON STOW, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHEARS FOR COUNTERS.
T 0 all whom it my concern:
Beit known that I, NELSON Srow, of Binghamton, in the county of Broome and State of New York, have invented a Device for Cutting Fabrics as they are Measured on Store-Coun- -v ters, of which the following' is a specification:
rlhe invention relates to shears or cutters for store-counters, whereby a cross slit or nip 011 the edge of fabric is made at a point up to which the measure has reached; and it consists in combining with the ordinary'cutters a thumb-piece and lever, which operate in connection upon the movable cutter so as to open and close it. a
In the drawing', Figure l is a top view, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section through line :v .c ot' F ig. l.
A represents a plate, which is, preferably, let into the counter, caused to be Atlush therewith, and recessed at a al a2. In one end ot' the recess a is hinged the movable blade B, and to one side ot' said recess is made fast the stationary blade or steel bar O, against which the blade B cuts. In one end ofthe recessa is hinged the thumbpiece D, which has a tlat end, d, and closes down in said recess so as to be outcof the way. E is a thumb-lever, pivoted to under side of plate A and having the curved arm e, which abuts against the lower side of thumb-piece D, while the flat end e extends so as to come under the recess a2.
The operation is as follows: The required number of yards of the fabric having been ,measured, the extreme point to which the measure has reached, on one edge ofthe goods, is brought under the knife B, which has been previously raised by pressure upon the dat end e of lever E. By now pressing` upon the tlat end d of thumb-piece, the blade B nips or cuts a small slit at the point desired on the edge of fabric, which' is then torn across in the ordinary manner.
I am aware that counter-shears, scissors, or cutters operated by treadle mechanism or by hand-pressure upon the blade, have been long known to the public; but, in practice, the thumb piece 1) and lever E are found to make the knife so much superior, in point of convenience and real utility, that I desire to protect myselt'in the invention.
' Having thus described my invention, what. I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1 The combination, with pivoted blade and stationary bar C, of the pivoted thumb-piece 'D and lever E, constructed and .arranged in connection with plate, substa-ntiall1 as and for the purpose described.
To the above speciticatiog of my invention I have signed my name this SljStffda-y of July,
A. D. 1872. 'l
