T 0 all whom it may concc'm Be it known that I, GABRIEL CLARK 1L- Lmns, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brookhaven, in the county of Lincoln and State oi Mississippi, have invented a new and Improved Backhandl'look, of which the following is a descrip tion.

My invention relates to a back band hook and more particularly relates to a back band hook having locking means to engage the trace.

The general object of the invention is to provide a back band hook for the indicated character, improved in various particulars, whereby certain advantages and improved results are obtained, among which are the i'ollowing:The hook may be readily applied to back bands of known form; the locking means is of a character to effectively prevent the accidental release of the trace; the hook and its appurtenances are prevented from exerting anyrubbing action against the sides of the animal; and provision is made in a novel way for renewing the wear surface against which thetrace contacts and the trace may be engaged and disengaged with facility and despatch.

The above and other objects are attained by the novel construction and arrangement o1 parts hereinafter particularly described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of one example of the invention. v

My attachment includes a keeper 10 formed on the lower end of a base plate 11 which is secured by any suitable means to the back band A, as for example, by rivets 12 having washers 13. The keeper is horizontally disposed, preferably approximately round in cross section, and presents a through-passage for the trace B.

front of the base plate 11 and has vertical movement thereon. The hook extends through an opening 15 at the top of the keeper l0 and when in engagement with the trace projects also through a bottom open ing 16. At the lower end of the hook let is a b1ll 17 adapted to engage the keeper 1() at a side of the opening 16 and preferably also a shoulder 18 is adapted to engage the top of the keeper adjacent to the front of the top opening 15 so that a double engagement of the keeper is effected. The shank of the hook 14: is secured at its upper end by a transverse pivot 19 extending through ears 19 on a cross bar 20 of a T-shaped slide 21 which has guided movement on the base plate 11. In the illustrated form the engagement of the base plate 11 with the slide is effected by producing forks 22011 the end of the cross bar 20, said forks engaging fiat bars 23 formed on the plate 11 at the sides by producing vertical slots 24 therein. Thus the slide 21 and hook 14: may be raised or lowered, for engagement or disengagement ot'the hook with the trace B when the latter is made to extend through the keeper 10, thereby insuring proper support for the trace and the locking thereof to prevent its accident-a lloosening,

. The hook-1 1 is subject to a compression spring 25 at the back of said hook, said the base plate and the hook 14 to normally tend to engage the bill 17 and shoulder 18 with the keeper 10. The spring permits of the ready depression of the hook 1 1 to disengage the members 17 and 18 to permit the upward sliding of the hook for releasing the trace. The upward movement of the hook 1st and its carrying slide 21 is limited, the arrangement being such that with the slide at the extreme upper ends of the guide bars 23, the hook will be so positioned that its bill 17 engages the top of the keeper 10 at the opening 15, thereby preventing the hook from complete disengagement from the keeper.

In order that the surface at the interior of the keeper, subject to the wear of the trace B, may be readily renewed, I produce a lining 28 detachably held in the keeper by suitable means, there being shown for the purpose end lugs 29 which are bendable to engage or disengage the ends of the keeper 10.

I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, I do not limit myself strictly to the mechanical details herein illustrated, since manifestly the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit'of the invention as defined in the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A back band attachment including a keeper having a through-passage for a trace, and a hook slidable transversely of said passage to engage or disengage the trace, and pivoted to have lateral swinging move ment into or out of latching engagement with said keeper.

2. A back band attachment including a keeper having a through-passage for a trace, and a hook slidable transversely of said passage to engage or disengage the trace, and pivoted to have lateral swinging movement into or out of latching engagement with said keeper; together with spring means acting on said hook and tending to maintain the same in latched engagement with the keeper.

3. A back band attachment including a base plate attachable to a back band, a keeper integral with said plate and horizontally disposed, said keeper presenting a through the top opening of the keeper and movable to a position to extend also through the bottom opening to thereby extend across the passage of the keeper for engaging a trace, said hook being pivoted to have lateral movement in the openings into and out of latched engagement with the keeper, and spring means acting on said hook, and tending to maintain the same in latching engagement with the keeper.

4:. A back band attachment including a keeper presenting a through-passage for a trace, a hook pivoted to swing transversely of the keeper for engaging the same and slidable to or from a position extending across said passage for engaging the trace, said keeper having top and bottom openings to accommodate the hook, members on said hook positioned to engage the keeper at the respective openings when the hook i in position across the passage, spring means tending to maintain the hook in latched engagement with the keeper, and means limiting the sliding movement of the hook in one direction so that when the hook is in the released position one of the members thereof will engage the keeper adjacent to the top opening, and when in the locking position said member will be positioned for engaging the keeper at the bottom opening.

5. A back band device including a keeper through which the trace may be passed, and a hook slidable on said device longitudinally thereof, at the inner side of said keeper and movable transversely into or out of engagement with the keeper to engage or dis-- engage a trace.
