To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PERLEY C. (harm, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Montrose, in the county of Montrose and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Motors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improvement 1n motors, and has for its object to provide a motor operated by the flow of water for supplying a portion of sald water to a reservoir or the like, wherein a rocker is provided adapted to be rocked by the flowing water, the rocker operating means for d1- verting thewater to the opposite sides of the rocker to cause the rocker to rock, the

In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, a suitable base 1 is provided upon which is mounted a pair of bearing brackets 2 and these bearing brackets support a shaft 3 to which is secured a double trough. This trough comprises a bottom consisting of similar trough portions 4 and 5.
These trough portions have a common bottom, formed from a sheet of metal con sisting of two portions bent at an obtuse angle with respect to each other, and the inner or adjacent walls of the troughs are curved as shown at 6, the said walls diverging slightly toward one end of the base and having their concave faces ad acent.
A reservoir 7 is mounted on U-shaped brackets 8 connected with the base, and this reservoir is supplied with water by a suitable pipe 9, from any suitable source of supply. The reservoir has two outlet pipes 10 and 11 which deliver to the troughs 4 and 5, respectively, and it will be noticed referring to Fig. 3 that the outlet plpes 10 and 11 diverge from each other and are connected at their free ends by a cross plate 12.
A shaft 13 is journaled in this cross plate, and in the front wall of the reservoir 7, and the shaft carries at its inner end a disk 14 which is a valve, for alternately closing the inner ends of the discharge pipes 10 and 11.
Thearrangement is such that the pipes will discharge in alternation, and as each trough fills it will be depressed by the Weight of the water, lifting the other trough, and the troughs are connected to the shaftlS in such manner as to swing the valve 14 when the troughs are rocked, to close that dischargepipe which has been discharging and open the other. I l A A counter-weight 15 is secured to that end of the shaft remote from thereservoir for holding the shaft in thrown position, with the valve in proper position to close one of the pipes 10 or 11. Flexible members 16, chainsin the present instance, extend from the outer walls of the troughs t0 the counter-weight, and they are connected with the counter-weight above the shaft 13 in such manner that when the trough is rocked the chains will pull the counterweight and oscillate the shaft 13, to cause the valve 14 to open one spout or discharge pipe and close the other. Means is provided for permitting the troughs to empty after they are filled and rocked downward,-the said means comprising ports 18 in the outer walls near the bottoms of the troughs, and these ports are normally closed by gates or valves 19 which are pivoted to the outer trough walls as indicated at 20, at the ends of the said wallsadjacent to the reservoir 7. At its forward end each of these gates extends through the front wall of the trough and has connected therewith a counter-weight 20. Angular lifting pins 21 are connected with the base at the outer side of each trough and at the front thereof and in position to be engaged by the adjacent counter-weight to lift the adjacent gate and open the same.
As soon as the gate is lifted the contents of the trough discharge and it will be obvious that the other trough meanwhile being filled with water, will be depressed, swinging up that trough which is empty. Thus the troughs will be alternately filled and discharged, and they will impart a rocking movement to the shaft 3.
This shaft extends from the front end of the base to the rear end, and near its rear end it has a cross head 22. A pump cylinder 23 is arranged below each end of the cross head and each cylinder carries a piston not shown, whose rod 24 is connected with the adjacent end of the cross head by a link 25. These pumps discharge to any suitable magazine as for instance, a reservoir.
A plate 26 is secured to the common bottom of the troughs between said troughs, and the troughs as a whole, slope slightly downward from the reservoir to the opposite end. As will be evident from an inspection of Fig. 4, the outer end of the trough is connected directly with the shaft 3, while the inner end is spaced above the same by a bracket arm 27.
I claim 1. A device of the character specified, comprising a rocker shaft, containers secured to the shaft and extending toward opposite sides thereof, a reservoir having discharge pipes delivering to the troughs, a valve for alternately closing the pipes, a connection between the valve and the troughs for operating the valve, each container having an outlet port in its outer side wall, and a gate normally closing the port, and means controlled by the sinking of the container under the weight of water for opening said gate.

8. A device of the character specified, comprising a shaft, a reservoir having a plurality of discharge pipes, a container secured to the rocker shaft at each side thereof and in position to receive the discharge from one of the pipes, and means controlled by the rocking of the shaft for alternately closing the said discharge pipes and opening the containers to permit the contents thereof to discharge.
