13 directed toward .the bottom of the filling compartment. The valve isoperated through lever mechanism, designated 14, la rod -`15 and any adjustable' link 16;, fromthe fioat 20, to which said link is pivotally connected. i
i The float suspension means ywill now be described .y 2l, 21 are yokes each `constituting a rigid structure and comprising a crossbeam 22 andopposed endmembers 23 of bellcrank formation, each end member having at its angle, ja ltrunnion 24 which is journaled within a thimble A25, set into the adjacent wall of the tank. The lower ends of the members 23 have. pivotally connected-to them the upper `ends of .links 26, which links, in turn, havethei'r lower ends pivoted, at yto thejsides rofthe float;v Thus `it `will beseen that the lower vbranch of leach Abelli crank member 23,- Land .the corresponding linkl261 constitutes artoggle joint which suspendslthe. float'from the vtank l(it being understood that the members 2'lfhav'eno connection` with the 4:fioat otherv than through Athe ylinks 126),.. y rIlhe `rknees A,of the vtwo toggle joints `.occurring on both sides of the float are shown as ,connected lby links 28A so that the joints are compelledte act in unison. In order. to restrict the float toa substantially vertical path, I connect the float, at the lower end'of the left hand link 426., through a connecting link or guide 30,'with the flower arm of the -fright hand-bell-,crank member 23 at a' point some distance from the trunnion of such ,member soy that when thev member sivings`fit ,willmaintai'nl the left hand end of 'the .connecting link and consequently the iioatin .a substantially kvertical path.,` In viewof t-hejA rigidity ofthe .members 2 1, it is deemed necessaryfto employ aeonnecting link or guide30 on-onlyone side Vof the float.
,l A shaft 32 .is journa-led withinthe front and rear wallsof .the tank near its left hand end, and an `arm 33, which is secured to the shaft, hasitsouter end connected, through a swing all vthe toggle joints to the positions shown. in Fig. 3, -thereby depressing the float. rlhe float, being suddenly depressed, elevates ythe watery level considerably above the vcrown 7 of the outlet siphon 6 and initiates the siphonic action. It will be observed thatthe knees of the toggle joints are thrown sufliciently beyond alinement with sides of the arms of the adjacent bell-crank members 23jy Therefore, the parts will remain in the position shown in Fig. 3 until they -water level has been lowered to such an extent that the float will swing freely upon its'l suspension means, when the weight of vthe operating handle 36 will tend to break the toggle'joints in the opposite directions so that, upon a subsequent filling of the Hushing compartment B, the fioat will readily return to normal position.
'When the float is depressed, the valve l2 will y.be opened through its aforesaid connectionwiththe float, and water will be immediately delivered to the filling compartment A.A Returning now to. the fiushing compartment B, as the water level is lowered in this compartment, it will draw water through the siphon 4 from the filling compartment A until the water level in the latter compartment is reduced to a point below the break of-the siphon 4. Upon such break, the flow from the filling to the flushing compartments will cease, and the outletsiphon 6 will Vcontinue to act until it is interrupted `by the lowering of the water level below its break.y Having no opportunity to immediately obtain a supply from the filling compartment A, the action within the siphon G will be completely broken, and; not until the filling compartment A and the inlet side of the siphon 4 .have been refilled to the crown of the siphon 4, will the iiushing compartment'begin to receive a new supply of water. The water flowing over the crown ofthe siphon 4 and down through the outlet end .thereof will start the siphonage `between the 'two compartments so that the flushing compartment will be supplied with water to the elevation of the crown of the outlet siphon .6. When this is reached, the float 2O will have resumed its normal position, and the valve 12 will have been closed.
vHaving thus described my invention, what I claim is l, In flushing apparatus, the combination with a tank, of an open bottom float within the tank, means for maintaining the 120 open .bottom of the fioat constantly horizontal Vwhile permitting the iioat to rise and fall, said means serving to hold the float depressed at a given depth against rebound, a supply valve, operative Aconnections between 125 the float and valve, and means for depressing the float, `said depressing means acting to render the aforesaid means ineffective in holding the float depressed when the water ceases to sustain the float.
