Application filed February 18, 1920.
T o all whom t may Concern: y
Be it known that I, GUs'rAv A. CARLSON, a citizen of Sweden, residing at Chicago, .in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Holders for Pencils, Pens, &c., of which the followingis a speciiication.
This invention relates particularly to holders for pencils, pens, or the like; and the primary object is to provide an improved device of the character indicated, which may be readily applied to a pocket of a vest, coat, or other article of wearing apparel.
The invention is illustrated, in its preferred embodiment, in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure l represents a broken vertical sectional view of the pocket of a garment, and showing the improved device applied thereto, the view being on an enlarged scale; Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view of the pencilholder shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a plan view of the same; and Fig. 4, a plan sectional view taken as indicated at line 4 of Fig. 2, but showing the clamping-member in closed position.
In the illustration given, A represents a portion of a garment, such as a vest, or coat, which is provided exteriorly with a pocket A', and B, the improved pencil-holder adapted to be applied to said pocket.
In the form shown, the device B comprises a pocket-engaging clip l; a resilient pencil-engaging loop 2 carried thereby; and Ja clamping-lever 3 carried by the member 1. i The pocket-engaging clip 1 comprises an inverted U-form sheet-metal member having at the upper end a web-portion 1a andhaving an Outer depending arm lb and an inner depending arm 1c. Between the arms Ib and 1 of the clip is a space, or channel, 4, which is Open at its lower end; and the arm 1c has an inclined downward extension 1d which has the effect of widening the channel at its lower end to facilitate applicationof the device to a pocket. The space 4 affords a channel which accommodates the upper'.
edge-portion of the pocket A.
The resilient pencil-holdiiig loop 2 is of rwell-known construction, and may be secured-to the clip l in Vany desired manner.
It is usual to formy the resilient loop 2 from coiled wire having flattened or substantially rectangular convolutions, that is, coils which are elongated. vertically. In the illustration Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 11, 1921.
Serial No. 359,551.
given, such coiled wire is bent into cylindrical form, and the end loops 2a and 2b are caused to engage a small sheet-metal clip 5, whose vertical edge-portions are then secured in channels 6, with which the arm 1c is provided. This particular feature is a well-known feature of construction.
The clamping-lever 3 preferably comprises a sheet-metal plate, whose lower end is joined, by a pintle 7, to the lower end of the outer arm lb of the clip 1. The upper end ofthe member 3 is equipped with a rearwardly-eXtending resilient finger-piece 3, which is adapted to engage the upper end of the clip 1 and lock the lever 3 in closed position. The member 3 is equipped at an intermediate point with a rearwardly-projecting stud 3b, which is adapted to work freely through a perforation 8 in the arm 1b and to press the cloth which may be contained in the channel 4 into engagement with a registering perforation 9 with whichvr the arm 1C is provided. In otherA words, the stud 3b is adapted to project into the space 4 and clampingly engage the cloth of the pocket andforce the cloth into'the perfora-v tion 9, which thus affords a shoulder fory engaging the cloth. rIlhe studr 3b is preferably formed by punching the metal ofthe mem-v ber 3 rearwardly, as clearly indicated in Fig. 4.
From the description given, it will be understood that the improved device may be applied with great facility to a pocket, and may be removed with equal facility; also, it will be understood that the improved device will securely grip the pocket.
The improved device is small, compact, and maybe cheaply manufactured.` It renders unnecessary the use of impaling tongs claim should be construed as broadly as permissible, in view of the prior art. i What I regard as newand desirable to secure by Letters Patent is:
A device of the character set forth, com` prising an invertedU-form clip having itsk inner' arm provided with an inclined down- Ward extension adapted to enter a pocket, a resilient loop mounted on said inner arm, the outer arm of the Clip being provided with a perforation, and a lever having its lower end pivotally connected With the lower end of the outer arm and having its upper end equipped With a resilient finger-piece adapted to engage the upper end of the clip, and having its intermediate portion equipped 10 with a stud adapted to project through said perforation and grip the cloth of the pocket.
