This invention relates to motor boats, and has for its object toprovide a novel watertight and reliable means through which the driving shaft and rudder operating rods or shaft pass from the water into the interior of the boat. Anotherpobject is to provide a novel rudder operating mechanism for the same.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters of reference refer to like-named parts on' the drawings.
Referring briefly to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of my device attached to the rear of a boat, the latter being only partly shown.
Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of: the same.
Fig. 3 is a plan view of one of the beveled sectors used on my device.
Fig. 4 is a side view of the rudder bracket used on my device.
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line A-A of Fig. 6.
Fig. 6 is a detailed view of the box 1a.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, 1 represents a pair of tapered nuts which retain my stuffing box securely in the rear of the boat. 1a represents a hollow or shelllike box which is of circular exterior crosssection and which is contained within the said nuts; the box 1a is threaded on its eX- terior surface so as to be engaged by the threads of said nuts. Said box is provided with an upper tube-like channel or opening 3a, and a lower 5a, the latter being of larger diameter than the former.
A hollow tube 3 extends through said box as shown from within the boat into the water; likewise a hollow tube 5 extends from within the boat into the water. Through the former tube the rudder control shaft 2 extends, and through the latter tube the propeller operating shaft 4; extends. At the water-side end of said tube 3 a packing gland 6. is secured, thus securely preventing the influx of water through said tube. Similarly, at the water-side end of the tube 5 screws and nuts 18. Horizontal guide members 11 and 12 extend outwardly from said l bracket to retain rotatably said shaft 8. The rudder'14 is retained by said shaft 8 by means of a forked sleeve 13.
i After the above device is mounted, a hole having of course been previously cut into the rear of the boat, the nuts 1 are drawn up tight toward each other both to securely retain the entire device and also to exclude water from the joint. f
It is now apparent that I have provided a reliable water-tight stufling box for the driving and steering mechanism of a motor boat, and also a quickacting and dependable mechanism for operating the rudder. All of the above are contained compactly in an integral unit, easily attached to any boat and readily transported for purposes of commerce.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim andy desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
In a device of the class described, a stuff-` ing box adapted to be inserted into the rear of a boat, said box comprising a shell-like member of substantially cylindrical form, theinner walls of said member being thickened on diametrically opposite sides, a longitudinal channel extending through one of said thickened sides, a second longitudinal channel extending through the other of said thickened sides, said last-named channel being of greater diameter than the first-named, j
the ends of said shelldike member being closed,tubes passing through said channels, and means for attaching said box to the rear of a boat comprising a pair of'nuts having tapered ends facing each other, said nuts surrounding said box and being adjustable.
