will enable those skilled in the art to which it 'ofa v UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFIOE. I HENRY BAOHMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. "Y. NIIEA'NYSIFOR YPROPELILING AND STEERING on GUIDING'B'OATS. i
To all? whom it'may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY BACHMAN, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at New York, in the county of'New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Means for Propelling and Steering or Guiding Boats, of which the following is a specification, such as apyla ertains to make and use the same.
his invention relates to means for proguiding small boats;
pellin and steering or and t eobject thereofis to provide an improved device of thisclass which is designed to be mounted in the rear end or stem of a boat, in the mannerv of an oar, so as to swin both in horizontal and vertical planes an which is provided with a propeller and means for operating the same. y
The invention is full disclosed in the following specification, 0 which the accompanying drawin s form a part, inwhich the separate parts 0 my improvement are .desi nated by suitableTreference characters in eafii of the views, and in which Fi ire 1 is a side view of the stern portion ioat provided with my improvedpropelling and steering device, part of the construction being in section; and Fig. 2, a horizontal section of the pro elling and steering device on the line 2 2 of ig. 1.
In the drawings forming part of this specification I have shown at a a part of .therear or stern end of a boat on which is pivoted at b a propelling and steering device c. The propelling and steering device 0 is mounted and operated in the manner of an ordina steerin '-oar and is adapted to swing both'in vertica and horizontal lanes and com rises a blade 0 having a shan member 0 an provided at the end oppositethe blade 0. with a handle 0,- the shank member 0 of the blade 0 andthe handle 0 being rigidly connected by a shaft-propelling mechanism (1 which operates a shaft e, passin longitudinally through the blade '0 and the s ank member 0 thereof and provided at the end of the blade 0 with a propeller e In the form of construction shown the propeller-shaft e is provided at the end thereof adjacent the shaft-propelling mechanism 11 with a bevel gear-wheel f, which forms a part of said mechanism, and at the o posite sldes thereof are beveled gear-wheeis which mesh with the bevel gear-wheel f and each of which is provided in the form of construc- Bpeciflcation of Letters Patent. Application filed December 19, 1906. Borill No. 292,488-

means of pipes h.
tion shown with a crank=pinf', and connect* "It will be observed that the oil or asolene engine, stora e-battery casing 9, an the oil and gasolene tank h are all arranged in horizontal line in the order named, and in ractice said arts are all rigidly connects and also rigid y connected with the shank c of the blade 0 so that said parts all taken together form a propelling and steering device in the form of "an oar having a handle c.
The mounting of the combination propelling and steerin oar at b is made by means of g to the casing of gasolene or oi motor at b in such manner that the combination propelling and steering oar is free to swing in a vertical plane, and the pin 1) passes vertically through a keeper-b, secured to the boat in such manner that said combination ropelling and steering oar is also ada te to swin in a horizontal plane.
aving fully escribed my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- .1. A combination steering and propelling device for boats adapted to be mounted on the stern of the boat 1n the manner of an oar and to swin in vertical and horizontal planes, said evice comprising an oar-blade member provided with a tubularshank, a handle member and a framework or casing connecting the tubular shank of the oarblade member and said handle member, a shaft mounted in the oar-blade member and provided at its outer end with a ropeller and at its inner end with 'a beveled gear-wheel, two cylinders mounted in the opposite sides of the framework or casing and provided with pistons and piston-rods geared in connection with said bevel gear-wheel, and means for operating said pistons.
2. combination steering device for boats adapted to loo member and said handle member, a shaft mounted in the oar-blade memberiand pro-- the stern of the boat in the manner of an oar I and to swing in Vertical and horizontal.
planes, said device comprising an oar-blade member provided with a tubular shank, a.
handle member and a framework or casing connecting the tubular shank of the oar-blade vided at its outer end with a propeller and at itsinner end witha beveled gear-Wheel, .two cylinders vmounted in the opposite sides of the: framework or casing and provided with pistons having =zpiston-rods, supplemental gear-wheels. mounted; intheopposite. sides of 16th, day of December, 1905.
