Description

H ERNST INTEGRAL NON-METALLIC CARTRIDGE CASE.
APPLICATION FILED MAR 7, 191,9.
Patented Jan. 11, 1921 /I TY'ORNE V UNITED STATES HANS ERNST, or ALTON, ILLINOIS.
IDTTEGBAL NON-METALLIC CARTRIDGE-CASE.
To all'wiwmz'tmizy concern:
Be it known that I, HANS ERNs'r, a subject of the Kin of Great Britain, residlng in the city of lton and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Integral Non Metallic Cartr1dge-Cases ,ot which the following is a specificat on, reference being had to the accompanying drawhis invention pertains to shot or cartridge cases, as ordinarily used in shot-guns or other guns of small caliber, and has for its object the provision of a non-metallic one-piece cartridge case constructed or molded of papier mach, vulcamte, red fiber or, any other similar non-metallic composition..
Another object is to so construct such cases that there will be a gradual tapering of the bore of the case from thefront to the base, whereby the base of the case and the wall immediately adjoining will be thicker than the balance of the case wall, thereby ofi'ering greater and sufiicient resistance to the explosive'force of the charge contained 1n the case.
Another object is, by the said one-piece construction of said case, to produce a case which will be cheap or economical in the manufacture and yet eflicient inuse.
With these objects in view, attention is called to the accompanying drawing where- Figure l is a longitudinal cross-section of my improved case;
Fig. 2 is afront end view; Fi 3 is a cross-section taken on the line A- in Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a rear end view;
Fig. 5 is a detail showing the method of 1 drawing or burring the rear face of the base of the case over the battery cup in order to hold the battery on in permanent position. Fig. 6 is a modi cation showing a slight metal reinforcement around the base.
Fig. 7 is a sectional view illustrating the manner of molding the cartridge case.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, my invention consists in forming,
pressing or molding the composition material, such as papier mach, vulcanite or the like non-metallic material into the form substantially represented in Fig. 1, so that the case body 1 will have a relatively thin frontal wall 2 and a relatively thick rear wall 3 Specification of Letters Patent.

formed by the tapering of the bore l of the case from the forward to the rear end. In this constructiona relatively thick base portion 5 is left, the same beingformed integral with the case body 1.. This base portion 5 represents and takes the place of the ordinary bases. This base portion 5 is formed with a port 6 to receive and frictionally engage the battery cup or primer 7. Into this port 6 the primer 7 is pressed and countersunk slightly below the fa'ce S of the base portion 5 and an annular bur 9 is pressed down upon and around the outer edge of the primer 7, thus locking it firmly in position.
The concave inner face of the base mer es into the interior taper of the body and forms tapering connecting portions at the juncture of the body and the base. Also the integral bur at the outer end of the primer port by projecting over the outer end of the primer not only urges the primer in the port, but provides a suflicient amount of the non-metallic-material at the outer faceof-the base to protect the primer when the cartridge case is arranged in an upright position upon a supporting surface.
Any slight changes or variations in the construction described may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention as laid down in the appended claim; for instance, the base portion 5 may be reinforced with a metal strip 10 in order to lessen the thickness of said base portion.
What I claim to be new and patentable 1s:
An integral non-metallic cartridge case consisting of a hollow body formed solely of tough non-metallic material and having an interior taper from front to rear, and a base integral with the body and provided with a concave inner face merging into'the interior taper of the body and forming continuous unbroken tapering connecting portions at the juncture of the base and the body, said base having a primer port enlarged at the outer end and provided thereat with an integral bur or portion overhanging the enlarged portion of the primer port and arranged to retain a primer in the port and to form a cushion for protecting the outer end of the primer.
HANS ERNST.
