UNITED STATES PATENT oEEIoE.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I,.JAMEs FRANK BUCK- INGHAM, a subject of the Kin of England, IVarwickshire, En land, have invented certain new and use ul Improvements in Incendiary Bullets and Shells, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to incendiar bullets and shells, and it has for its ob]ect to improve the construction of that type in which thecase contains an incendiary substance which flows out during .the travel of the bullet. l
This invention comprises the employment of a plug at the rear of the bullet, t-he said plug belng rovided with longitudinal rooves where y incendiary substance in the rontof the bullet case can reach an outlet in the side near the rear of the case.
` In the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is a central vertical section of an incendiar rifle bullet constructed in accordance wit this invention.
' 2 is a side elevation of one'part of Fig. 3 is a planof the same, and f Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the other part of the plug.
Like letters indicate like partsthroughout the drawings.
The bullet com rises a case A filled as to its forwardpart with an incendiary composition. Toward the rear is fitted a lug 1n two parts C and D. The part 1s formed with longitudinal grooves C and the part D is chamfered -or beveled o at its upper edge D so that an annular space E is formed which communicates with the space B throu h the grooves C. lThe outlet or outlets communicate with the an- 'nular space E so 'that the incendiary compositionfrom the compartment B can iow' down the groove C into the annular space E, and to the atmosphere from the outlet or outlets F. In construction, ythe bullet case is first jformed with an open rear endand the plug C is ushed in against a slight shou dei` form at A. The plug'D is thenfinserted' and they rear end A* of the case is spun Patented Jan. '1, 191s.
over, and if necessar the central hole G may be plugged wit solder. Preferably the outlet F 1s plugged with some solder which fuses at a low temperature when the bullet is heated, so that the outlet is normally sealed and the contents flow out when the bullet leaves the barrel.
ObViUSly the complete plug may "f that the hole F is over the chamfered` part D.
What I claim Vas my invention and desire to secure b Letters Patent is 1. A b let or she'll, comprisin a case with an outlet in the rear of its si e, incendiary substancein the front of the case and a plug at the rear of the case provided with longitudinal grooves and an annular rece in rear of the grooves whereby the incendiary substance can reach the outlet.
2. A bullet or shell, comprising a case with an outlet in its side, incendiary substance in the front of the case anda two part plug at the rear of the case, thel forward part being provided with longitudinal grooves and the rear part with an annular recess whereb the incendiary substance can reach the out et.
3. A bullet or shell, compris' a case with anfoutlet in the rear of its slile, incendiary substance in the front of the case, a plug at the rear of the incendiary substance provided with longitudinal grooves, a plug avng an annular cham'fered part at the rear of the'iirst plug; whereb after the in-4 cendiary substance as Howe through the grooves it can flow out through the outlet,
In testimony whereof I 'have lsigned my name tothis specification in the presence ofi two subscribing witnesses. l
JMB FRANK BUOIINGIIAI.
