LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4, 19731 Application filed August 21, 1919. Serial No.-318,914.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoUIs DOMANSKI, a citizen of Poland, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful I mprovements in Locks, of which the followlng is a specification.
This invention has as its ob ect the provision of a lock of novel character adapted to be applied to hinged doors, the locks being substantially unpickable.
A further object is to provide a lock which may be opened from the inner side of the door in a convenient manner and operated from the outer side of the door by a key of peculiar construction. 4
These objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming a material part of this disclosure, and in which- Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing a lock made in accordance with the inventlon, the cover plate being removed. I
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View taken 011 line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the form of key used in connection with the lock.
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 44 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5 is a side elevational view showing the lock and indicating its application.
Referring to the several drawings in detail, the numeral 10 indicates a fragmentary portion of a door, movable relatively to the jamb 11, on which is secured a keeper 12, containing a cylindrical opening, the keeper being fastened by extending flanges 13, through which pass securing means of ordinary type, as the screws shown.
Engaged upon the inner side of the door 10 is a rectangular casing 14, held by screw bolts 15, passing through the integral cover plate 16, at the corners of the lock casing.
A marginal recess 17 is formed with the bottom walls of the casing 14, the same securing a flat metallic plate 18, set against the surface of thedoor, and formed with the plate 18 is a sleeve 19, extending through the door and engaging in an escutcheon plate 20, with which are formed cylindrical projections 21, receptive of the screw bolts 15'thereby securing the lock casing to the door structure.
A flanged sleeve 22, fastened to the casing plate 16 by rivets 23, in which is rotatablyengaged a stem 24, having a fixed corrugated knob 25 at its outer end. Formed with the stem is a cylindrical enlargement 26, cut partially away, as indicated by the numeral 27, and terminating in the spindle-like exten- S1011 of pin 28.
Secured upon the enlargement 26 is the hub 29, of a bevel pinion 30, the teeth of this pinion meshing with the teeth of a bevel gear 31, formed at the side of a spur gear 32, mounted on a spindle 33, journaled in a projection 34, formed integral with the lock casing, and on the opposite side of the block 34 is a collar 35,pinned to the spindle, preventing it from moving longitudinally.
.An internal pad 36 is formed with the front wall of the lock casing 14, and contained in the pad 36 is a coarse pitched screw thread adapted to engage corresponding threads formed on the bolt 37 so as to be operable therein.
A cylindrical extension 38 is formed with the bolt 37- and secured upon it is an elongated spur gear 39, meshing'with the teeth of the gear 32, the bolt having a central bored opening 40 receptive of a spindle 41, its reduced outer end 42 passing through the wall of the casing and secured rigidly in position by the nut 43, the spindle 41 acting as an axis on which the bolt 37 may rotate .and also move longitudinally.
From the foregoing it will be seen that when the knob 25 is revolved, rotary motion is conducted to the bevel gears and through the spur gear 32 to the elongated shell gear 39, causing the bolt 37 to rotate, and due "to the connection in the pad 36, the same is extended or retracted in accordance with the direction in which the knob 23 is operated, thus permitting thebolt to be actuated from the interior of the door in a ready manner.
A key having a stem 44 and looped finger grip 45, is formed with an attenuated shank 46, and has an enlarged cylindrical extension 47, its outer end terminating in a flattened projection 48, engageable within .the hub of the gear 30 and flattened portion 27 of the stem 26 and formed in the cylindrical section 47 of the key is a drilled opening 39 receptive of the pin 28; so that the same is guided in position.
The key is further provided with the elongated slot or keyway 50, the same when en-' tered passing the small projection 51, formed at the inner end of the sleeve 19, and which efiectually prevents the entrance of a plain cylindrical stemmed key.
A pro er key, as shown in Fig. 3, having been ful y entered is free to turn due to diameter portion 46 of the key.
From the fore oing it will be seen that an easily operate lock has been described readily actuated from the interior of the building and by the use of a special key from the outside, while the parts of the lock are so arranged and located as to prevent the entrance of an implement by which the lock could be picked, preventing the unauthorized intrusion of undesired parties.
I claim-- In a lock, the combination With a hollow rectangular metallic casing adapted to be disposed upon one side of the door, and an escutcheon plate upon the other side of the door, of lugs projecting inward from said plate, securing bolts passing through said casing and entering said lugs, a gear train rotatably mounted in said casing, a flanged sleeve secured to said casing, a stem rotatably engaged in said sleeve, a corrugated knob on said stem and a spindle extension for actuating said gear train from one side of the lock, an elongated spur gear actu:
ated by said gear train, a screw threaded bolt combined with said elongated gear, an axial support for said bolt fixed in said casing, a keeper for said bolt, and a key adapted to enter said casing and engage with the operating means of said gear train.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
LOUIS DOMANSKI.
