There are various instances of doorways being provided with both outer and inner doors. Commonly such an arrangement is found in a caravan, the doorway of which is provided with an inner screen door and a main outer door, the two being hinged to swing about a common axis. For ventilation, the outer door may be left open, the screen door being closed to exclude insects. It is desirable that the inner door should be capable of being latched closed, so that it may be opened from inside and unless an interior security latch is operated, may be opened from outside; that the outer door should be capable of being latched closed adjacent to and covering the screen door so that the two may be jointly opened from inside or outside; and that the inner screen door, or both the inner and the outer doors, should be capable of being locked and capable of being opened from inside or outside only by the use of a key.
It is the general object of the present invention to provide a lock of simple and efficient character whereby these desiderata may be achieved.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention resides broadly in a door assembly including; an inner door; an outer door; a locking member for said inner door; a releasable mating latch between the inner face of the outer door and the outer face of said inner door to hold said doors in adjacent position or release them; and release means for said locking member accessible from outside said outer door when said doors are adjacent. Other features of the invention will become apparent from the following description.
A preferred embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

The double door lock consists, in general, of an inner door lock assembly 10 attached to an inner screen door 11, and which is engageable with a lock strike 12 mounted on ajamb 13 of the doorway of a caravan, and also engageable with an outer door plate 14 attached to an outer door 15. The hinged stiles (not shown) of the inner door 11 and of the outer door 15 are mounted on double hinges (not shown) of well-known type so that both doors may be swung about a common axis.
The inner screen door 11 has a swinging stile 16 which is ametal box section with a timber filler 17. The inner door lock assembly 10 includes an inner lock body 18 and an inner door plate 19 with four integral studs 20 which are passed through parallel holes through the swinging stile 16 so that the inner door plate 19 is brought against the outside face of the stile. The inner lock body 18 is fitted to the inside face of the stile l6 and is fixed by screws 21 passing through the body and engaging in tapped bores of the studs 20. g
The lock strike 12 consists of a side plate 22 formed integrally with top and bottom rails 23 and 24, and is fixed to the jamb 13 by screws at 25. The upper surface of the bottom rail 24 is shaped to form a ramp 26 leading up to rack teeth 27.
The inner lock body 18 is formed with upper and lower guides 28 and 29 which, when the inner door 11 is closed, engage above and below the upper and lower rails 23 and 24 of the lock strike. Between the upper and lower guides 28 and 29 there extends a dog 30, rotatably mounted in and extending from the body 18, and adapted, when the inner door 11 is closed, to engage with the rack teeth 27. The dog 30 is formed integrally with a ratchet wheel 31 which is within the housing and normally engaged by a lock pawl 32 formed integrally with a leaf spring 33 which urges the pawl, pivoted at 34, into engagement with the ratchet wheel, as shown in FIG. 4. Therefore, when the inner door 11 is closed to cause the dog 30 to be rotated by engagement with the rack teeth 27 of the strike 12, the dog cannot be counterrotated while the pawl 32 engages the ratchet wheel 31,v and the door 11 is held closed.
From within the caravan, the pawl 32 may be moved clear of the ratchet wheel 31 by an inside door handle 35 pivoted at 36 to the body 18 and having a finger 37 extending into the body and engaging an L-shaped projection 38 extending from a side of the pawl 32. When the inside door handle lever 35 is moved in the direction indicated by an arrow in FIG. 2, the finger 37 co-acts with the projection 38 to disengage the pawl 32 against the action of its spring 33.- c
From outside the caravan, the pawl 32 may be disengaged from the ratchet wheel 31 by a push button 39 slidable in a bush 40 extending from the face plate 19, and urged to extended position by a helical compression spring 41. Slidable in a push rod guide 42, extending from'the housing 18 and through a hole through the stile 16 of the inner door 11, is a push rod 43, at one end socketted in the push button 39 and at the other end pivoted at 44 to the pawl 32 so that when the push button 39 is depressed, the pawl is moved clear of the ratchet wheel 31.
From within the caravan, the inner door 11 maybe prevented from being opened by means of a night latch 45 which, as indicated in FIG. 4, may be moved either to unlatched position, as shown in full outline, or ,to latched position, as indicated in broken outline. When in latched position, the night latch restrains the pawl 32 from being moved to disengaged position clear of the ratchet wheel 31.
If the night latch45 should be raised to latched position after the pawl 32 has been moved to disengaged position by means'of the inside door handle 35, the pawl will be retained in such disengaged position, the night latch engaging under a projection 46 on the pawl. The inner door, then, may be moved to or from fully closed position without operating the inside door handle 35 or the push button 39.
The inner door 1 1 may be locked closed, by means of a key, from outside or inside the caravan. A keyoperated lock barrel 48 of well-known type is mounted in the inner lock body 18 and is such that it may be turned when an appropriate key is inserted thereinto, the key being capable of being withdrawn when the barrel has been turned through 180. A similar lock barrel 49 is mounted in a bush 50 extending from the inner door plate 19. Each of the lock barrels 48 and 49 has at its inner end a radial projection 51. A lock barrel extension piece 52 is mounted on the inner end of the inside lock barrel 48 and extends rotatably through a hole through the stile 16 of the inner door 11, the projection 51 of the inside lock barrel 48 being so engaged in a corresponding recess in the'lock barrel extension piece 52 that this piece will rotate with the lock barrel 48. The extension piece 52 is formed with a radial projection 51a corresponding to the projections 51 of the lock barrels 48 and 49, and closely approaching that of the outer lock barrel 49.
A stop slide 53 is vertically slidable within the inner door plate 19, to raised or operative position, as shown in FIG. 5, or to lowered or inoperative position. A leaf spring 54 formed integrally with the slide has a projection 55 which, by engaging in either of two recesses 56 in the plate 19, retains the slide 53 releasably in either of these two positions. The stop slide 53 may be raised from inoperative position to operative position by either the rotation of the inside lock barrel 48, or the outside lock barrel 49, to cause the projection 51a of the extension piece 52, or the projection 51 of the outside barrel 49, to lift an upper shoulder 57 of the stop slide; and likewise either of the said projections 51a or 51 may, on counter-rotation of the inside or outside lock barrel, act on a lower shoulder 58 of the slide 53 to depress the slide to inoperative position. When the stop slide 53 is raised to operative position, a notch 59 at its top rises above a collar 60 on the push rod 43 in such manner as to prevent the push rod from being moved by the push button 39, and also to prevent the pawl 32, attached to the push rod, from being moved otherwise to disengaged position. When the stop slide is lowered to inoperative position, it clears the push rod collar 60.
Associated with the inner door plate 19 is a mating latch 61 comprising a detent extending through a hole in the plate 19 from a slide 62 vertically movable within the door plate, and urged downwardly to operative position by a spring 63. The latch may be raised to inoperative position by a finger piece 64 extending through the side edge of the door plate 19.
, The outer door plate 14 has a body portion 65 closely fitted within a hole through an extruded section forming the swinging stile 66 of theouter door 15. Two holes 67- are formed through the outer door plate and are such that, when the outer door is swung close to the inner door 1 l, the bushes 40 and 50'extending from the inner door plate 19 will be received closely in these holes, so that the push button 39 is readily accessible, and a key may be conveniently inserted in the outside lock barrel 49. Within the outer door plate body 64 is a strike 68 which, when the outer door is closed against the inner door 11, is engaged .by the springloaded mating latch 61.
The outer door plate 14 is formed with a fixed door handle 69.
The portion of the inner door plate 19 extending from the swinging stile 16 towards the hinged stile is shaped to form a handle 70 for the inner door 1 1.
from outside by means of the outer door handle 69 after the push button 39 has been depressed. To open the outer door only after the two doors have been closed, it is necessary first to open the two together until the finger piece 64 of the mating latch 61 is clear of the lock strike 12, the mating latch 61 then being released so the outer door 15 can be opened separately, the inner door 11 being re-closed.
The inner door 11, or the inner door 11 and'the outer door 15, latched together, may be locked or unlocked from inside or outside the caravan by means of a key. However, if the night latch 45 has been operated from inside the caravan, the inner door 11, or the two doors together, cannot be opened by a key. The provision of the locking mechanism, key-operated from inside the caravan, ensures that, if the outer door 15 should have been left open for coolness, the inner door 11 cannot be opened by an intruder merely by cutting the mesh of the inner door and operating the night latch.
Double-door locks according to theinvention will be found to be very effective in achieving the objects for which they have been devised. Such locks may, with suitable modifications be usable for double doors other than those of caravans.
What I claim is:
l, A lock for an inner and an outer door including;
an inner door lock assembly adapted to be mounted on the inner door; 4
a lock strike adapted to be mounted at said doorway;
a locking member on said inner door lock assembly adapted, when the inner door is closed, to engage releasably with said lock strike to hold said inner door closed;
an outer door attachment adapted to be mounted on said outer door;
a mating latch on said inner door lock assembly adapted, when the outer door is brought adjacent to the inner door to engage releasably with said outer door attachment to hold the two doors in such adjacent relationship;
a mating latch release means on said inner door lock assembly adapted to be moved to disengage said mating latch from said outer door attachment;
inner lock release means and outer lock release meanson said inner door lock assembly adapted to be operated respectively from inside and outside the inner door to release said locking member from engagement with said lock strike;
a movable stop member in said inner door lock assembly adapted when in operative position to prevent disengagement of saidlockinglmember, and
inner and outer lock mechanisms adapted to be keyoperated respectively from inside and outside the inner door, each adapted to move said stop member to operative or inoperative positions;
said outer door attachment being so apertured as to give access to said outer lock release means and of a doorway said outer lock mechanism from outside the outer door when the two doors are adjacent.
2. A lock according to claim 1 wherein said locking member is a roothed rotatable dog engageable with rack teeth on said lock strike;
a ratchet wheel is connected coaxially to and is rotatable with said dog;
a lock pawl is spring-loaded into engagement with said ratchet wheel;
said inner door lock release means is operatively connected to said lock pawl and adapted when operated to disengage said lock pawl from said ratchet wheel;
said outer door lock release means is connected to said lock pawl by a push rod, and adapted when restrain said lock pawl against movement either out of or into engagement with said ratchet wheel.
4. A lock according to claim 1 wherein said mating latch release means is enclosed within said lock strike whensaid inner door is closed.

Claims (4)

1. A lock for an inner and an outer door of a doorway including; an inner door lock assembly adapted to be mounted on the inner door; a lock strike adapted to be mounted at said doorway; a locking member on said inner door lock assembly adapted, when the inner door is closed, to engage releasably with said lock strike to hold said inner door closed; an outer door attachment adapted to be mounted on said outer door; a mating latch on said inner door lock assembly adapted, when the outer door is brought adjacent to the inner door to engage releasably with said outer door attachment to hold the two doors in such adjacent relationship; a mating latch release means on said inner door lock assembly adapted to be moved to disengage said mating latch from said outer door attachment; inner lock release means and outer lock release means on said inner door lock assembly adapted to be operated respectively from inside and outside the inner door to release said locking member from engagement with said lock strike; a movable stop member in said inner door lock assembly adapted when in operative position to prevent disengagement of said locking member, and inner and outer lock mechanisms adapted to be key-operated respectively from inside and outside the inner door, each adapted to move said stop member to operative or inoperative positions; said outer door attachment being so apertured as to give access to said outer lock release means and said outer lock mechanism from outside the outer door when the two doors are adjacent.

A lock according to claim 1 wherein said locking member is a roothed rotatable dog engageable with rack teeth on said lock strike; a ratchet wheel is connected coaxially to and is rotatable with said dog; a lock pawl is spring-loaded into engagement with said ratchet wheel; said inner door lock release means is operatively connected to said lock pawl and adapted when operated to disengage said lock pawl from said ratchet wheel; said outer door lock release means is connected to said lock pawl by a push rod, and adapted when operated to move said push rod to disengage said lock pawl from said ratchet wheel, and said movable stop member is adapted when moved to operative position to restrict movement of said push rod.
3. A lock according to claim 2 wherein a movable security latch is mounted on said inner door lock assembly and is adapted when in operative position to restrain said lock pawl against movement either out of or into engagement with said ratchet wheel.
4. A lock according to claim 1 wherein said mating latch release means is enclosed within said lock strike when said inner door is closed.
