Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 4;, 1921.
Application led June 30, 1920. Serial No. 393,208.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD BnocKUr, a citizen of Poland, residing at Carteret, in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
rllhe main object of this invention is the provision of acombination lock having means whereby the same may be opened without the aid of any key, but only by one having acquaintance with the proper sequence of steps in the manipulation of the various indices on the face of the lock.
The above and other objects will become apparent in the description below, in which characters or' reference refer to like-named parts in the drawings.
Referring briefly to the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevational view of my lock.V
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the complete lock.
Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 4.
Fig. 4 is a similar view with the front cover plate removed.
Fig. 5 is a cross-sectional view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 represents the casing of my lock, having a front cover plate 3 and a rear cover plate 4. A shackle 2 is slidably mounted in said casing, and is provided with arcuate grooves or recesses 17 and 1S in its leg 2a, and with an arcuate groove or recess 19 in its leg 2b. A recess 21 is also provided in the leg 2b below the recess 19, being bounded by two parallel, horizontal walls between which a latch 14 is adapted to be engaged.
Between the covers 3 and 4 are mounted, one above the other, rotatable cylindrical pins 8 and 10, as shown, lying partly in the path of the leg 2a, and each having an arcuate recess 20 therein for the purpose of allowing free passage of the leg 2a when each of said pins is turned into the position shown by the pin 10 in Fig. 5. A similar pin 9 is mounted between said covers and lying partly in the path of the leg 2b.
Said pins extend through the front cover 3, and on the extensions are mounted hexagonal rotatable handle members 8a, 9a and 10a, upon each of which is engaged an arrow. Surrounding each member' Sa, 9a, and
10a, is a graduated circle having any desired indicating marks, as, for instance, numerals 1 to 10, inclusive. In the particular form of my lock illustrated, the respective positions of the handles for opening the lock are indicated in Fig. 1.
Within the frame 1 is a compartment 22 in which a rigid pin or shaft 11 is vertically mounted. A coiled spring 13 surrounds the enlarged portion 12 of said pin and is secured at the bottom to said frame and at 'the top to said pin. A latch 14 is pivotally mounted on said shaft and is provided with a substantially U-shaped recess adapted to surround the leg 2b, and particularly the recess 21 in said leg. An extension 15 of Said latch projects through the rear cover 4, and is adapted to be moved a short distance so as to disengage the latch 14 from the recess 21. The spring 13 normally urges the latch 14 into engagement with the recess 21.
A coiled spring 16 is located in the lower part of the frame beneath the leg 2b, normally urging the shackle 2 upward.
Assuming, now, that the lock is in closed position, and that it is desired to open the same. First the handles 8, 9a, and 10a are rotated into the positions shown in F iv. 1, and then the extension 15 of the latch4 14 is moved slightly to the left (Fig. Thereupon the grooves 17, 18, and 19 being all in the position shown by the groove 17 in Fig. 5, will allow free passage upward of the legs 2a and 2b of the Yshackle 2, and the force of the spring 16 will raise the said shackle, since the latch 14 has also been disengaged from the recess 21.
Thus it is apparent that I have provided a compact and durable combination lock which cannot be opened by one not acquainted with the combination, and which requires no key.
I claim:
A device of the class described comprising a 'frame having a front and a rear cover, a shackle slidably mounted in said frame, arcuate grooves in the legs of said shackle, pins pivotally mounted between said covers, said pins being mounted partly in the paths ot said legs, said pins normally engaging said grooves in said legs, and being adapted to be rotated so as to bring said groovesin 'said pins adjacent said legs to allow free passage of said legs, index handles attached to said pins outside said front cover, graduations upon` said front cover surrounding said handles, a shaft supported in Vertical position in said frame, a latch pivoted ou said shaft, :L coiled spring surrounding said shaft and normally urging said latch against one of said legs, a recess in said last-named EDVARD BROCKUP.
