Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4, 1921.
Application filed November 11, 1919. Serial No. 337,150.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL F. LEMKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at 2712 No. Francisco Ave, city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements 1n Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toys consisting of one or more movable figures, and its object is to provide a toy having figures which are movable to simulate certain military evolutions or other movements.
The object stated is attained by means of a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
In the drawing,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the toy, and
Fig. 2 is a cross section thereof.
Referring specifically to the drawing, the toy is composed of one or more figures 5 carried by a base 6 which is adapted to be dragged back and forth across the floor, a table top, or any other smooth supporting surface.
The base 6 is in the form of a shallow rectangular box having its top and bottom made of card board, and its sides of wood. On the bottom wall of the box are knobs or feet 7 for spacing the same from the surface along which the toy is to be dragged.
Each figure 5 represents a soldier, the same being mounted to turn about a vertical axis so that it may simulate the movement of a soldier going through the evolution of right-face, right-about, etc., according to the initial position of the figure. This movement of the figure is attained by providing the same with a pin 8 depending from its base and passing loosely through the top and the bottom of the base 6 to depend from the latter a sufficient distance to be in contact with the table or other surface along which the toy is to be dragged. The
lower depending end of the pin 8 has a lateral bend 9, so that its extremity, which is in sliding contact with the table surface, does not coincide with the pivotal axis of the figure but is ofi to one side thereof. This arrangement causes the figure to turn when the toy is dragged along the table or other surface, the action being similar to that of a caster wheel.
It will be understood that the toy may be provided with figures other than that of soldiers, and any number of figures may be provided. lVhen a plurality of figures are provided, as illustrated, they move together.
The base 6 is provided with a handle 10, whereby the toy may be manipulated.
I claim:
A toy comprising a base having means whereby it may be slidably positioned on and spaced from a supporting surface, a vertical pivot member carried by the base and depending therefrom, the depending portion of the pivot member having its eX- tremity positioned off to one side of the axis of said member and adapted to come into sliding contact with the supporting surface, and a figure carried by the pivot member and positioned above the base.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CARL F. LEMKE.
