UNITED STATES WILLIAM C. F. ZIMMERMAN, JR., 0]! DAVENPORT, IOWA.
STUMIP-IPULLING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4, 1921.
Application filed May 19. 1919. Serial No. 298,023.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VVILLIAM C. F. ZIM- MERMAN, J12, a citizen of the United States,
of the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 8 is a fragmentary, side elevation of residing at Davenport, in the county ofi/ the sweep box and adjacent parts construct- Scott and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stumplulliug Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the. invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to stump pulling apparatus, and more particularly to means for mounting and actuating and re leasing the cable carrying drum.
An object in view is the provision of a novel construction of the parts of a stump pulling apparatus whereby they may be reduced in number as compared to those usually required and may be relatively larger and stronger, and wherein a single member may be employed for controlling the connection between the cable carryingdrum and the sweep or other operating mechanism.
Another object is to provide a stump pulling apparatus with a sweep having as a part thereof a shaft or spindle for supporting the cable carrying drum and which also forms a carrier member for the interlocking element adapted for use in coupling and uncoupling the drum relatively to the sweep.
With these and further objects in view as will in part hereinafter become apparent and in part be stated, the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangements of parts as subsequently specified and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,-
Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in section, of a stump pulling apparatus constructed according to the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken vertically through the same substantially on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 9 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 10 is a detail, perspective view of one of the eccentrics employed in the modified form.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, and first to the structure disclosed in Figs. 1 to 6 inclusive, 10 designates the frame of a stump pulling apparatus which may be of any suitable construction and provided with a hook 11 at one end for attachment of an anchoring cable. The upper side of the frame 10 is provided with a relatively large bossed opening 12 which is in axial alinement with a reduced bossed opening 13 formed in the lower side of the frame 10. A drum 1% is arranged within the frame and is provided at its lower end with a hub portion 15 provided with an opening therethrough corresponding to the opening 13 and which has in spaced relation to its upper and which serve as means for locking the drum to an operating mechanism for turning the drum in one direction. The drum is provided upon its upper end with peripheral ratchet teeth 18 in the usual manher for interlocking engagement with the usual ratchet mechanism which may be carried upon the frame 10.
. A sweep box 19 is arranged above the frame 10 and is provided with a hub or j ournal portion 20 adapted to rotatably engage in the upper opening 12 of the frame for supporting the sweep box on the frame and to provide a bearing for the sweep box when turned. The hub portion 20 is adapted to bear .upon the upper end of the drum 14: and is provided with a reduced shaft or spindle 21 adapted to project downwardly and axially through the drum 14 toform bearings for the opposite ends of the drum to support it and admit free rotation of the drum on the shaft. The lower end of the shaft 21 has bearing in the lower opening 13 of the frame and the lower portion of the: frame is adapted to hold the shaft in true verapparatus having a slightly modified form I to form continuations of the lateral walls of the slot or way 22. A locking plate 24 is slidably fitted in the way 22 and is adapted to be raised and lowered in the way. The plate 24 is of substantially the full width of the interior of the hub 20 and the lateral lower edges of the locking plate 24 are adapted to interlock with the ratchet teeth 17 when the plate is lowered for connecting the cable carrying drum 14 to the sweep box 19 when the latter is turned in one direction.
For the purpose of raising and lowering the plate 24, the hub 20 carries a transversely extending crank shaft 25 provided between its ends and axially within the hub 20 with a crank portion 26 adapted to engage in an elongated horizontal slot 27 formed in the upper end of the locking plate 24'. One end of the crank shaft 25 extends beyond the side of the hub 20 and has connected thereto a handle 28 for use in turning the shaft 25 to raise and lower the lockinn; plate. The locking plate 24 is the only element of the apparatus which need be raised and lo ered to effect the locking and releasing of the drum with respect to the sweep box. In prior apparatus, it has been deemed es ential to provide sleeves, and other relatively large and heavy parts which are shiftable bodily in order to effect the desired lock ng and releasing of the drum rel tivelv to the sweep box.
It is apparent that when it is desired to release the drum 14 from the sweep box, it is only necessary to throw the handle 28 over from the pos tion shown in Fig. 1, to an opposite position for turning the crank shaft 25 and raising the locking plate 24 upon the crank portion 26' of the shaft. Such act on lifts the locking plate up within the guide 22 and outof the path of the ratchet teeth 17. The drum 14 is then free to rotate upon the shaft 21. It will also be noted that the sweep box, the hub 20. and the shaft 21 are formed in one piece and facilitate assembly and tak ng apart of the apparatus, as well as providing parts which may be of substantial s ze and s ren th and which offer but. relatively few bearing surfaces. Furthermore. the hub 20 of the sweep box is constructed to carry and contain the single locking element. the plate 24, and the handle connecting shaft 25.
' Referring now to the modification shown in Figs. 7 to 10 inclusive, the parts are of the same structure as above described with the exception that the locking plate 29 carri'es a lifting shaft 30 which is a straight transverse shaft having bearing between its ends in the plate 29 and which is adapted to move vertically in vertical slots 31 formed in the opposite sides of the hub 20. Mounted on the outer ends of the shaft 30 are eccentrics 32 adapted to bear upon the top of the frame 10, and, when turned, to raise and lower the shaft 30 andthe plate 29 carried thereby. The eccentrics 32 are provided on their outer sides with radially extending sockets 33 adapted to receive the opposite ends of a handle bail 34 which is of sufficient length to extend over the sweep box 19 and to provide suflicient leverage for the easy turning of the eccentrics 32.
In the operation of the modified structure, it is only necessary to throw the handle 34 over from one side to the other in the apparatus in order to turn the eccentrics 32 against the top of the frame 10 and thus raise the shaft 30 and the locking plate 29 out of engagement with the ratchet teeth 17.
It will be noted that in both forms of the invention the locking plate constitutes the sole movable element for effecting the looking and releasing of the drum relatively to the sweep box.
That I claim is:
1. In stump pulling apparatus, in combination, a frame, a shaft journa'led in the frame and provided with an enlarged hub portion at its upper end, and a sweep box on top of the hub portion,a locking plate extending diametrically through the hub portion and the shaft having vertical ways in opposite sides opening into the hub portion for receiving the locking plate when lowered, a drum mounted to turn on the shaft and provided with ratchet teeth in its upper end about the shaft, and means carried by the hub portion of the shaft for raising and lowering the locking plate for movement toward and from said ratchet teeth.
2. In stump pulling apparatus, in combination, a frame, a shaft journaled in the frame provided with a chambered enlarged upper end and a sweep box above said enlarged end, a drum mounted to turn on the I shaft and having ratchet teeth in its upper end, and a locking plate extending transversely through the chambered upper end of the shaft, and the latter having vertical ways in opposite sides to receive the lower end of the plate, and means for raising and lowering the plate out of and into engagement with said ratchet teeth to lock and release the drum relatively to theshaft.
3. In stump pulling apparatus, in combination, a frame, a shaft journaled in the frame and provided with a hollow hub at its upper end and a sweep box above the hub, the shaft having a vertical transverse way in its upper end opening into the hub, 5 a locking plate arranged transversely in the hub and adapted to move vertically in the way, a drum on-the shaft having ratchet teeth in its upper end with which said plate is adapted to interlock, a shaft extending 10 transversely through the hub and engaging the locking plate, and means for operating the shaft to raise and lower said locking plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
