devices for makingandforming'cigarettes. The present invention is an improvement on the structure shown in my prior Patent,

No. 1,296,548, dated March 4, 1919. In the device described in that patent. the lower end of the filling tube or barrel is temporarily closed and the funnel is designed to be frictionally held on the upper portion of the barrel. In the present invention the lower end of the barrel is permanently closed and slidable means is provided for removing the filled or completed cigarette from the upper end of the barrel. The funnel is slidably mounted on the barrel and pivotally attached to the slidable membenfor the purpose of bringing the same into alinement with the barrel and moving it to one side to permit the insertion of a paper tube or wrapper, and for the removal of the finished cigarette. An object of the invention is to provide means for carrying the tubular member which is used to wind or fold the wrapper around which the paper is rolled and also the tamping rod within the wrapper forming member when not in use.

Referring to the drawings, forming a part of the specification, and to themumerals placed thereon for a full description of the invention, in which:

Figure 1 is a side elevational view of the complete invention with the slidable and pivotal funnel in place on the barrel.

Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view through the axis and in the plane of the paper showing the tubular wrapper forming member therein and the tamping rod pushtd into the same.

Fig. 3 shows the funnel tipped at an angle to the barrel and the wrapper forming member in the act of inserting the paper wrapper into the barrel.

Fig. 4 shows the use of the tamping rod for forcing the tobacco into the paper casing or wrapper.

Fig. 5 shows the complete cigarette being moved from the upper end of the barrel of the device.

Referring to the drawings in detail, the barrel is indicated at 1 and is formed with a closed lower end 2. Also formed in the opposite sides of the barrel are slots 3 and 4. 5 indicates a slidable collar mounted on the barrel and carrying a pin 6 which extends diametrically across the barrel and slides in the slots 3 and 4. The purpose of the sliding collar and pin 6' is for removing the finished cigarettes from the barrel as will be fully explained. 7 designates a slidable collar located on the upper outer surface of the barrel and pivotally connected thereto are the arms 8 and 9. These arms are permanently attached at their upper ends to the funnel 10 by any suitable means. The funnel 10 is formed with a shoulder portion 11 for receiving the upper end portion 12 of the barrel. For the purpose of rolling the paper wrapper of the cigarette the tubular member 13 is provided. This member has located therein a piston 14, preferably of rubber and attached to the piston is a tamping rod 15. The tubular member is readily removed from the barrel 1 by pushing upward the funnel 10, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5, until the collar portion 10 slips away from the portion 12 when it can be bent into position shown in Figs. 3 and 5. The tubular member 13 is for winding or folding the wrapper of the cigarette therearound and then inserting it into the barrel. The tubular wrapper forming member 13 is then withdrawn from the paper wrapper leaving the same, as shown in Fig. 4, within the barrel 1. The funnel 10 is then swung back over the end of the barrel 1 and pushed downward on to the end of the barrel as shown in Fig. 4. The tobacco is then insertecl or scooped up by the funnel 10. The tamping rod 15 is now withdrawn from the tubular wrapper forming member 13 and the tobacco, indicated at 16, is tamped downward into the paper wrapper 17 After the tobacco is all forced downward into the wrapper 17, the funnel 10 is tipped into the position shown in Fig. 5. The collar 5 is then moved upward on the barrel 1. The pin 6 which engages the lower end portion 17' of the paper casing forces the finished cigarette outward from the barrel 1 as shown in Fig. 5. The tamping rod 15 is now pushed inward into the tubular member 13 and again inserted within the barrel 1 as shown in Fig. 2.

It will be seen from this description that I have provided a device for making and forming a cigarette, which can be readily carried in the pocket and one which will permit the tam ping rod and the tubular wrapper forming member for Winding the wrapper to be carried within the device, ready for use at all times.

What I claim is:

1. A device for the purpose described, comprising a barrel member having one end closed for receiving the wrapper of a cigarette, a funnel slidably mounted on the barrel and designed when in use to rest on the upper or open end of the barrel, means for pivotally attaching the funnel to the bar rel to permit the same to be bent out of the axial line of the barrel for inserting the Wrapper and for removing the finished cigarette therefrom.
