Patented Aug. 1, 1939 UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE Albert J. Plaman and John Thompson, Newhall, and Olav Hovden, Fairmont, Calif.
Application September 27, 1937, Serial No. 165,800
8 Claims.
Our invention relates to a combination tobacco receptacle and cigarette maker and the objects of our invention are:
First, to provide a tobacco pocket case which is substantially of conventional form, made of meta1, together with a device in connection therewith for forming and filling a cigarette paper to form a cigarette;
Second, to provide a device of this class which collapses so that the shape when ready to place in the pocket is practically the same in appearance as the conventional metal tobacco case or receptacle;
Third, to provide a combination tobacco receptacle and cigarette maker in which the ciga rette-making apparatus may be secured in position in the case when not in use as a cigarette maker;
Fourth, to provide a device of this class in which the cigarette maker is easy to operate and in which the cigarette paper is gradually pushed oif of the making device as the tobacco is packed into the cigarette paper;
Fifth, to provide a device of this class with a novel packing means for packing the tobacco into the paper;
Sixth, to provide a device of this class which is foldable and collapsible; and
Seventh, to provide a combination tobacco receptacle and cigarette maker which is very simple and economical of construction, easy to operate, efficient in its action, and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in View as will appear hereinafter, our invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this application in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of our combination tobacco receptacle and cigarette maker when in folded collapsed position ready to be placed in the pocket of the user; Fig. 2 is 2. Ion-- gitudinal sectional view taken from the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary sectional view taken from the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a fragmentary bottom end view taken from the line l--4 of Fig. 1 and Fig. 5 is a side elevational view of the device complete when in position ready for use for making a cigarette, showing the cigarette paper in dash line positioned thereon showing a portion broken away to facilitate the illustration.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawing. 5-
The tobacco case I, tobacco case cover 2, cigarette forming tube 3, sleeve 4, tamping member 5, rod 6, and the spring member 7 constitute the principal parts and portions of our combination tobacco receptacle and cigarette maker.
The tobacco case I is of conventional metal form provided with an inset bottom la, as shown best in Fig. 2 of the drawing, the lower edges; of which are rolled as shown. best in Fig. 2 of the drawing. It is preferably made fiat so that J it fits into the pocket and is easy and convenient to carry. It is provided near its upper end with a ridge portion lb which forms a groove lc at the inner side. Positioned some distance from the upper edge of the case hinged at one side by means of hinge members 2a is the case cover 2 which is adapted to fit down over the upper end of the case and opens up as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawing but fits down and covers the upper edge down to the ridge lb as shown by solid lines in Fig. 2 of the drawing. Mounted in the one side and fitting in the groove I is a metal partition 4a, shown best in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing, which extends only part way across the upper end, as 30 shown in Fig. 3. This partition 40. is provided with an opening ib therein, and surrounding this opening and extending upwardly so that the lid when closed will rest on its upper side is a rubber sleeve member 4. This sleeve member 4 fits snugly on a tube 3 which is the cigarette forming tube and fills the space between the partition 40. and the upper side of the cap 2 but permits the shifting of the tube 3 longitudinally in said sleeve. The cap 2 is also provided with a hole 2a. centrally to permit the shifting of the cigarette making tube 3. This tube 3 is slightly longer than a cigarette and is provided on its inwardly extending end with an outwardly flanged bell-shaped end 31% and is reciprocally mounted in the partition 4a, sleeve 4, and cover 2. Reciprocally mounted in this tube 3 is a tamping member which is provided with an extended lug Ed on one side which is adapted to engage the end of tube 3 at the bell-shaped portion for shifting the tube 3 outwardly ready for preparing a cigarette, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 5 of the drawing. This member 5 is also provided with a plurality of stepped portions 5b which are adapted to engage the tobacco when the member is reciprocated in the tube for tamping the tobacco and causing it to move outwardly in the tube 3 in the paper covering for the cigarette. Pivotally connected to the one end of the tamping member 5 is a rod 6 by means of a pin 6a. This rod 6 extends outwardly through a hole I d in the bottom member I and is of sufiicient length to be used as a plunger for shifting the tubular member 3 outwardly to the position shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing. This rod member 6 is provided in its outwardly extending end with a wire spring member I which is U-shaped and adapted to be sprung into the bottom portion above the roll portion le, thus latching the rod 6 in folded position up against the bottom of the case, as shown best in Figs. 1, 2, and 4 of the drawing.
The operation of our combination tobacco receptacle and cigarette maker is as follows:
When the case and cigarette maker are in folded and collapsed position as shown in Fig. 1, the case may be filled with tobacco or used with tobacco therein in the usual manner, the space between the edge of the partition and the other side of the open end of the case may be used for removing or placing tobacco in the case and the cover hinges in the conventional and usual manher as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawing. When it is desired to make a cigarette,
the spring member I is compressed and the rod member 6 is hinged on the pin 6a. so that it extends in alignment with the member 5 and the tube 3. Then the rod 6 is pressed inwardly until the lug 5a reaches the end of the tube 3, forces the tube 3 outwardly to a position as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing. A cigarette paper is then rolled around the outwardly extending tube 3, as shown by dash lines in Fig. 5 of the drawing, and the end is closed. Then, by reciprocating the rod 5 together with the tamping member 5 the casing being positioned so that the tube 3 is on the lower side as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawing, the tobacco is then packed or tamped and forced into the cover 0 and the paper is forced off of the end of the tube 3 after which the upper end is closed, then the casing member is turned so that the tube 3 extends upwardly, then the rod '6 is withdrawn, the tube 3 pressed downwardly into closed position, the rod 6 then pulled up against the bottom and the spring I with its ends pressed between the edges of the bottom supported by the rounded portion le and the case is then ready to be replaced in the pocket of the user.
Though We have shown and described a particular construction, combination, and arrangement of parts and portions, we do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination, and arrangement, but desire to include in the scope of our invention the construction, combination, and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
