To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILLIAM B. Came BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Yakima, in the county of Yakima and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Pumps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.c
This invention relates to certain improvements in rotary pumps, and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character constructed in a manner whereby it is particularly adapted for use in submergence as in a well or the like.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character embodying a stator and a rotor and wherein the rotor revolves around a vertically directed axis.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved pump whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, 1 will now roceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view taken through a rotary pump constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the rotor, unapplied.
Fig. 3 is a view partly in horizontal section and partly in top plan of my improved pump as herein embodied;
Fig. 4 is a view in elevation of the lower .pair of blades or impellers as herein included; and
Fig. 5 is a view in elevation of the intermediate pair of blades or impellers as herein included.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, A denotes a stator embodying a cylindrical casing 1 having its axis vertically disposed and with its upper face closed by a removable plate or head 2.
The casing 1 is not a true cylinder but has its peripheral wall at one side gradually olfset in a radial direction as indicated at 3 for an extent substantially half-way around the casing 1. The larger end extremity of the resultant chamber a communicates with a vertically disposed eduction port 5 and with which a suitable carry-oif pipe is adapted to communicate.
The lower or integral head 6 of the casing 1 is provided with a circular depression 7 eccentric to the axial center of the casing 1 proper with the side wall of said depression substantially in coincidence with the inner face of the peripheral wall of the casing 1 adjacent the eduction or discharge opening 5.
The base or bottom of the depression 7 at the axial center thereof is provided with a supplemental depression 8 concentric to the depression 7 and the central portion of the depression 8 has in communication therewith a bearing opening 9 continued through the support or stand 10 integrally formed with the bottom or closed head 6 of the easing 1. The lower end portion of the stand 10 is provided with an outstanding annular flange 11 whereby the device may be effectively anchored in working position.
S denotes a vertically disposed ClIlYG shaft extending through the casing l and having its lower end portion mounted within the brass hearing or sleeve 12 snugly fitting within the bearing opening 9. The shaft S is also disposed through an opening 14 in the upper head 2 and through the gland 15 carried by said head 2.
R denotes the rotor of my improved pump working within the stator A and which includes a circular disk 16 keyed, as 17, or otherwise aflixed to the shaft S and which disk seats within the depression 7. The central portion of the head 2 is provided with a depending sleeve or hub 18 integrally formed therewith and which substantially bridges the space between the disk 16 and the upper head 2 of the casing. The sleeve 18 has integrally formed therewith the cylindrical cam 19 of a length coextensive with the length of the hub or sleeve 18, said cam being eccentric to the hub or sleeve 18 but concentric to the axial center of the casing 1.
The marginal portion of the disk 16 is defined by an upstanding annular flange 20 induction openings of a Width to closely approach the removable head 2 of the casing 1 when the parts are assembled and said fiange 20 is intersected by the transverse slots 21, herein disclosed as six in number and equi-distantly spaced in a direction circumferentially of the disk 16.
The blades or impellers 22 are adapted to travel the slots 21, each of said blades or impellers being of a length substantially equal to the space between the opposed faces of the disk 16 and the upper head 2 or of the opposed faces of said head 2 and the radially extended portion of the lower head 6.
The blades or impellers 22 are arranged in pairs and the blades or impellers of each pair are diametrically opposed and are provided with the inwardly directed webs or shanks 28 anchored at their inner end por tions to an elongated eye 24, said eye having its major axis perpendicularly disposed relative to the longitudinal axis of each of the shanks or webs 23. It is preferred tlt at the inner end portion of each of the shanks or webs 23 be positioned between a pair of outstanding lugs or ears 25 carried by the eye 24: and to which said end portion of the shank or web 23 is riveted. The peripheral wall of the casin 1 at circumferentially spaced points between the eduction or discharge port 5 and the small end of the radially enlarged portion 4 of the casing is provided with the entrance or 26, preferably rectangular in form with the major axis of each of said openings substantially equal to the space between the opposed faces of the disk 11 and the head 2.
As the rotor R revolves, the blades or impellers 22 will be extended or retracted with respect to the annular flange 20 to assure the requisite lifting of the water or other fluid.
Resting upon the bottomof the supplemental depression 8 and the lower head 6 of the casing 1 is an annular bearing member 27 substantially concentric to the shaft S and superimposed upon sald annular hearing member 27 are the vertlcally spaced annular bearing members 28. Interposed between the bearing members 28 and coacting therewith are the anti-friction members 29, preferably ball and which anti-friction members are carried bythe annular retaining blade 80. By this means, the rotor h. is permitted to rotate with a minimum of frictional resistance.
The particular arrangement and assemblage of parts of my improved pump as v hereinbefore described makes the device of particular advantage for use when in submergence and particularly when positioned within a well although I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself solely to this last mentioned purpose.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a pump constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof, and for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carryprising a casing having its axis vertically disposed, the peripheral wall of said casing at one side being gradually offset in a radial direction to an extent substantially half way around the casing, said casing being provided in its top head with a discharge port in communication with the enlarged end of said radially increased portion of the casing, the lower head of the casing being provided with a circular depression eccentric to the axial center of the casing proper with the side wall of said depression substantially in coincidence with the inner face of the peripheral wall of the casing adjacent the discharge opening, the central portion of said circular depression being provided with a. supplemental depression concentric to the first named depression, a vertically disposed drive shaft extending through the casing and having its lower end portion mounted within the central portion of the supplemental depression, a rotor working within the casing and including a circular disk keyed to the shaft and arranged within the first named depression, the marginal portion of the disk being defined by an upstanding flange of a width to closely approach the top head of the casing, said flange being intersected by transversely disposed slots, blades'traveling through said slots and movable with the disk, coacting means carried by the shaft and blades where signature.
