AMMER.
Specificationof Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920.
Application filed January 27, 1920. Serial No. 354,333.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM H. SAUNDERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at os Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammere, of which the following is a specification; a
This invention relates to hammers and is particularly adapted for use in shinghng and other similar work.
The principal object of the invention, is the provision of means for using a strip of nails formed from a strand of wire in such a manner that after each nail is inserted in the shingle or wood work the hammer may be twisted so as to sever the same from the strand.
Another object of the invention is the production of means for causing each nail to come to the desired position in the hammer.
A still further object of the invention is the provision of the guide for the wire whereby a substantially long strip may be used.
The various features of novelty whereby my invention is characterized will be hereinafter pointed out with particularity in the claims; but for a full understanding of my invention and its various objects and advantages, reference may be had to the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of my hammer.
Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary-top plan view of my hammer.
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of my hammer and i Fig. 5 is a fragmentary perspective of the wire used with my hammer.
By referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that 1 designates the body of the hammer which is provided with a handle 2 extending therefrom. This handle consists of the grip portion 3 and the stop portion 4 the purpose of which will be hereinafter brought out.
The body 1 of the hammer is provided with a longitudinal bore 6 having the enlarged opening 7 communicating therewith. The bore 6 is provided with the diametrically opposed communicating slots 8 for a purpose to be hereinafter brought out. The
opening 7 it will be seen by referring to Fig. 1 becomes smaller toward the center portion of the body 1 and is provided with the curved surface 7' adjacent the slot 9 which communicates with the longitudinal opening 6.
'The wire l't is adapted to be received in the bore 6 as is shown in Fig. 1 and consists of the nail portion 14; and the head 15 which is formed by melting the wire at regular intervals so as to form .a substantially flat and thin portion to be easily severed from the remaining the hammer or in some other suitable manner. By referring especially to Fig. 4 of the drawing it will be seen that I have provided the diametrically opposed slots 8 which communicate with the bore 6 for receiving the flat portions or head portions of the nail 15 so that when the nail 14 is inserted in the shingle or woodwork that by twisting the hammer I may sever this inserted nail from the remaining portions of the wire.
In order that I may use a substantially long strand of wire I have provided a guide which is adapted to be received in the socket l0 and held therein by means of the set screw 11. This guide consists of the elongated arm 12 which extends parallel to the longitudinal side of the body 1 and terminates in the right angularly extending eye 13 for receiving the strand of nails.
The lever 16 is provided with the lip 17 for insertion in the slot 5 of the handle 2 and is pivoted therein by means of the rivet 18. The lever 16 consists of the arm 19 and the grip portion 20 which is similar to the grip portion 3 of the handle 2 and the lever 16 is also provided with the stop portion 21 adapted to abut the stop portion 4: of the handle 2. The arm 19 is curved and at its terminal is provided with a slot 23 for engaging the strand of wire at the head 15 thereof. A spring 22 is provided between the handle 2 and the arm 19 so as to hold same normally together and hold the grip portions 3 and 20 apart. When the arm 19 is adjacent the handle 2 it will be seen that the slot 23 will engage the next head on the wire and by forcing the grips 20 and 3 toward each other, the nail let will be moved to its proper position as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. When the nail is in this position it will be seen that the stops 21 and 4 will be abutting and with the aid of the portion of the wire by twisting lip 17 fitting in the slot 5 it will be seen that the lever 16 and the handle 8 will be held in firm relation to one another so as to firmly hold the nail in its proper position when inserting same in the shingle or woodwork.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new is 1. A device of the class described comprising a body having a longitudianl bore, one portion of which is circular and provided with diametrically opposed slots running longitudinally therewith and communication therewith, a handle, and means 1gor moving a wire nail string through the ore.
2. A device of the class described comprising a body provided with a longitudinal bore for receiving a wire nail string, one portion of said bore being circular and provided with diametrically opposed slots communicating and running longitudinally therewith, a handle extending from said body, a lever pivotally mounted on said handle, said body provided with an opening communicating with said bore for receiving one end of said lever, said end of said lever being notched so as to engage said nail string for progressively moving it.
3, A device of the class described comprising a body portion provided with a longitudinal bore, an opening provided in the side of said body portion communicating with said bore intermediate the ends of sai means adapted to move adjacent the curved surface of said bore for progressively moving a wire nail string through the bore.
4:. A device of the class described comprising a body provided with a longitudinal bore for receiving a wire nail string, a handle extending therefrom having a curved portion intermediate its ends and terminating in a stop portion, a lever having a lip pivotally connected to the handle intermediate its'ends and a curved portion adapted to register with the curved portion of the handle, and provided with means forrprogres sively moving a wire nail string through the bore, and a stop portion adapted to abut the stop portion of the handle for moving the wire nailstring through the bore of said body.
in presence of two witnesses.
