UNITED STATES JOSEPH ALBERT, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.
DETACEABLE LINING'.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee. 28, 1920.
Application filed September 1, 1920. Serial l'110.11073422.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, Josnrn ALBERT, a citizen of the United States, residin at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and tate of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Detachable Linings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garments, and more specifically to an improvement in detachable linings for waists and other garments of a similar nature. p
In my (3o-pending application filed Febu ruary 9, 1920, SerialNo. 357,131, I have shown a garment comprising, a sleeveless waist having a lining detachably located therein and provided with sleeveswhich are detachably secured to the lining. lI'his invention relates to an improvement upon the article disclosed in my other application, as above identified, and has as one of its primary objects the provision of improved means for securing and positioning the hning within the garment.
Another obiect of the invention is to provide a lining which may be used in garments of varying size by providing means whereby the lining may be adjusted and may at the same time be concealed at the point where it is so adjusted in size.
Another feature of the invention is the provision of a garment construction whereby a detachable lining may be placed in garments in which the waist is given a blouse effect, or in which an overskirt is provided. The above, and lother objects of the invention which are of a more obvious nature and which will become manifest as the description proceeds, are attained by constructing a waist having an interior flap at the neck adapted to fold over the upper edge of the detachable lining. Fastener elements are located upon the flap and upon the lining and the lining is provided with means whereby it may be taken up and adjusted in size beneath the flap, this means being shown specifically as a line of perfoi'ations extending between the fastener elements so that the lining may be folded over the fastener elements with the fastener elements extending through the perforations.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein one embodiment of my invention is shown by way of example,
Figure 1 is a perspective of a waist provided with a lining, a portion of the waist being broken away to show the connection of the sleeves to the lining,
Fig. 2 is a front elevational view of the lining with the sleeves secured thereto, one of the sleeves being partly detached from the lining,
Fig. 3 is an interior view kof one of the sleeve extensions,
Fig. 4 is an edge View of a modified form of garment taken along the opening line of the garment and showing a garment having a waist and skirt portion with an inner facing secured thereto so that the waist may be given a blouse effect.
Fig. 5 is a view of the upper portion of the waist shown in Fig. l with the flap raised and showing the lining folded over so that excessive fullness may be taken up.
Referring to the drawings more in detail, lO indicates a sleeveless waist having a lining 11 therein which is detachably secured to the waist by means hereinafter described. The waist is shown as being sleeveless, and the lining itself is of sleeveless construction, but sleeve members 12, which may or may not match the waist in texture and color, are detachably secured to the lining. Referring to Fig. 3, it will be noted that these sleeves are formed with extensions 13 each extending upon the shoulders and over the body around the arms. The sleeve members may be attached to the lining in any suitable manner, but in the present instance they are shown as being detachable, the sleeve extensions having fastener elements 14: upon their interior faces, and the lining having located thereon a line of complemental fastener elements l5 extending down the front of the lining and up over the shoulder. It will be noted that the sleeve extensions are not secured to the lining at the back below the shoulders, they being held in position by means of an elastic element 16 secured at each end to the sleeve extensions and extending across the back.
The lining, constructed as above described, may be secured within the waist in any manner desired but it is preferable that the lining be made detachable from the waist so that it may be laundried when necessary. In the drawings I have shown the waist as being formed at the neck with an interior flap 17 adapted to fold over. the
upper edge of the lining, thereby positioning and concealing the same. the lining may be directly secured to the waist but for the sake of appearance and simplicity of structure it is preferable that it be secured to the flap 17. Any practicable form of fastener element may be used but i in the specific embodiment of my invention shown inthe drawings 1 have shown the Hap as being provided'upon its under face with sockets 18 which coperate with com plemental posts 19 adapted to fit within the sockets. Obviously other forms of securing means might be employed for holding the lining within the waist and also the fastener elements might be placed upon the outer face of the flap, the flap not being folded over the upper edge of the lining. It will be noted that when the flap is folded over and the fastener elements engaged, as shown in Fig. 1, the lining is firmly secured in position within the waist and its upper edge is neatly and eectively held in position so that it cannot extend up above the upper edge of the waist at the neck.
By reference to Figs. 2 and 5 it will be noted that the lining has a plurality of perforations 2O adjacent the fastener elements and shown as extending between them, althoughtheymight be .located on each side of theV fastener elements. These perfora- .tions may be formed by hemstitching and coperate with the fastener elements to permit the adjustment of the lining to conform to the size of the waist. 1f it is found that the lining is slightly large for the waist posts 19 into engagement.
It maybe found desirable to place a plu rality of sockets in the flap so that if any considerable adjustment is made in the lining and the position of the posts 19 changed, the posts will be positioned beneath other of these sockets into which they may be inserted without rufliing the flap.
Referring to Fig. 4, there is shown an edge view of a modified form of garment, the view being taken along the line of opening of the `garment, which comprises a waist portion 21, a skirt 22 and an interior facing 23. Thefacing 23 is secured tothe waist at the neck 211 by folding overV the upper edge of the waist, and may besecured to the'` skirt and waist by a lineV of stitching 25, the stitching being run after the skirt is slightly lifted in order to give the ,Waist the blouse eifect shown. The fas Of course,
tener elements shown upon the inner face of the waist coperate with complemental fastening members upon the edge of the waist at the other side of the opening, and the fastener elements shown upon the facing cooperate with complemental fastener members which may be placed in suitable positions along the lining. Such fastener members are not shown in the lining disclosed in Figs. 1 and2, but, obviously, might be positioned thereon when desired.
lThe garment thus -constructed may have the detachable lining shown in Figs. 1 and 2 secured therein in the same manner indicated in Fig. 1. 1 am aware that it is not broadly new lto provide a detachable lining but, so far as 1 am aware, 1 am-the first to devise a garment `having a blouse effect together with a detachable lining. 1t is, of course, evident that by providing the interior facing 23 numerous other variations of garment construction may be adopted, such as the provision of an overskirt, all of which come within the scope of my invention. It will be understood that the constructions shown in the accompanying drawings are shown merely by way of example and that my invention may take other forms, all of which come within its scope as defined by the following claims:
