AUTOMATIC STOP FOR ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1920.
Application filed November 17, 1919. Serial No. 338,630.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, TRUEMAN H. TWA, a subject to the King of Great Britain, residing at Coombs, in the Province of British Columbia and Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automatic Stops for Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements n automatic stops for engines and the principal object of the invention is to provide means for disconnecting the eccentric from the inlet valve when the speed of the engine passes a predetermined point.
Another object of the invention to provide latch means in the form of a pendulum for holding the parts in operative position and also to provide means for regulating the moment when the said latch means will become effective.
The invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several 'parts, to be hereinafter fully described,
illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which The figure is an elevation of the invention with the parts shown in inoperative position in dotted lines.
In the drawing 1 indicates the eccentric which actuates the valve of the engine, the stem of said valve being shown at 2. This stem carries the pin 3 which engages an opening in a block 4. Said block fits in a frame 5 which is secured to the end of a rod 6, the other end of which is connected with the eccentric 1. The upper end of the frame 5 is closed by a cover piece 7 which is hinged at one end to the frame as at 8. This cover piece is held in closed position by the latch bar 9 which is pivotally con nected to the frame by means of the pin 10. The lower end of the bar 9 extends a considerable distance beyond the pivot pin and is provided with a weight 11. A pin 12 is carried by the frame 5 and this pin passes through a slot 13 formed in the latch bar 9. A coil spring 14 is placed on the pin and has one end bearing against the latch bar and its other end against a lock nut 15 on the outer end of said pin. A thumb nut 16 is also arranged on said pin and engages the lock nut. By this means the latch bar is yieldingly held in engagement with the cover piece 7 and the pressure of the spring against said latch bar may be adjusted by the lock nut and thumb nu It will thus be seen that when the speed of the engine becomes so great that the enertia of the weight 11 will cause the latch bar to swing on its pivot the cover piece will be released so that the frame and rod 6 will drop and thus release the valve stem so that the valve will not be actuated. By regulating the tension of the spring, the moment this action will take place may be varled. I may provide a stop 16 on a stationary part of the engine for acting as a rest to receive the rod 6 when the same drops from the valve stem as shown in dotted lines in the drawing. I prefer to set this tension spring so as to hold the latch bar in engagment with the cover piece at the speed at which the governors of the engine are set. In this way if the governors should fail to work and the speed continues to increase, my device would come into operation and thus release the valve from the eccentric and so stop the engine.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is In combination with the valve and its operating eccentric of an engine, a rod connected with the eccentric, a frame carried by the rod, a part on the valve stem fitting in said frame, a hinged cover on the frame for holding said part therein, a latch bar pivoted to the frame for holding the cover in closed position, said bar having an extended lower part, a weight on said lower part, spring means for holding the latch bar in operative position and means for regulating the tension of said spring.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
TRUEMAN H. TWA.
