HERBERT I-I. WAGNER, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK.
FORM FOR WRAPPING FOLDING BOXES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Faten-tea Dec, 21, 192() Application filed October 23, 1920. Serial N0..418,883.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERBERT H. WAGNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Form for Wrapping Folding Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for supporting a pasteboard box and a wrapper therefor during the process of uniting the wrapper to the box.
The object of the present invention is to provide an improved form particularly adapted to fit into and support the sides of a folding one piece pasteboard box of the character described and claimed in an application filed October 7, 1920, Serial No. 415,413.
It is a further object to provide an improved support for the wrapper and box by the use of which the wrapper is not united to the hinged portion of the box but is left free thereof so that the unitin of the wrapper with the hinged section of the box does not take place until the folding of the box is accomplished.
The present invention comprises attachments for commercial box-wrapping machines. It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a form and support which are adapted to be used with such machines without any change whatever in the construction or operation of the machine.
The present case is the fourth of a series of cases. the first of which was referred to above. The second case, Serial No. 418,881, covers the improved wrapper; the third case, the process of; uniting the improved wrapper with the improved foldable box is described and claimed in an application, Serial No. 418,882.
The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification, with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing in the drawings, but may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salientfeatures of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating the box and wrapper before the uniting thereof.
Fig. 2 is a vertical elevation with the box and wrapper indicated in cross section showing the form and the support before the wrapper has been united to the flanges of the box.
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section with parts shown in elevation and illustratingthe wrapper flanges in the act of being united to the box flanges.
Fig. 4t is a top plan view of the form for the box.
Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the block or anvil which provides a support for the box and wrapper.
The numeral 6 designates the receptacle portion of the improved box and 7 is the cover portion. The receptacle portion has an end flange 10 integral therewith and side flanges 11. The cover portion has side and end flanges 12 all substantially alike, therefore designated by the same reference character. Binders l3 join the abutted ends of the flanges of the box. Each flange 11 has a tab 14 integral therewith. The flanges and tabs are all separated from the parts of the box to which they are connected by score lines made by a knife-like implement which cuts into the fibers of the material of the box.
The cover and receptacle portions are connected by an intermediate hinged portion 8. This hinged portion is substantially rectangular and is joined to the other parts of the box being integral therewith. Crease lines 9 define the hinged portion. Such crease lines are made by a blunt instrument which compresses the fibers of the material of the box without cutting or breaking the same. The box is designed to be folded along both crease lines and is formed with slight continuous taper so that the cover portion has a suficient width to inclose the receptacle por tion. The tabs 14- are designed to be folded inwardly so that they will support the hinged 1 portion of the box when the cover closes the box.
The wrapper 15 is of paper ornamented in any desirable way and usually provided with advertising matter 011 one side thereof. The i other side is designed to be coated with mucilage or other adhesive whereby the wrapper is promptly united to the outside of the box so that all visible portions of the box are covered up. This wrapper comprises end flanges 16- and side flanges 17 and 18. Each of said flanges is separated from adjacent flanges by reentrant cuts and slits. These slits provide triangular tabs 19 intermediate each pair of flanges 17, 18. The flanges of the wrapper have a suflicient width to not only completely cover the corresponding flanges of the box but they may be pasted over the free edges of the box flanges and united to the inner walls of said flanges. The end flanges 16 are adapted to be united to corresponding end flanges 10, 12 of the box. Each flange 17 of the wrapper is designed to cover a flange 11 of the box and its tab 14. Each flange 18 of the wrapper is designed to cover the side flanges 12 of the cover portion of the box. The triangular .tabs 19 of the wrapper are designed to be pasted to the inner wall or face of the hinged portion '8' of the box.
With this understanding of the box and wrapper construction a description of the parts which form the subject of the present invention may be proceeded with. "The numeral 20 designates a stem, 21 a plate and 22 fastening elements, such parts being found in the forms of old and well known wrapping machines and are not further described since they form no part of the present invention. A block 23 is loosely mounted on the stem 20 and carries the plate 21. This block may be made of wood and preferably has a plurality of bores 28 (see Fig {1) permittingiescape of air in the box when the form and box are joined. The stem 20 is secured rigidly to a plate2i which may be of brassor other metal and has bores (not shown) registering with the bores 23 of the block. Thus the plate 2 1 and block 23 are loose relative to each other whereby slightirregularities in formand dimensions Qfthe pasteboard boxes are accommodated. As seen from Figs. 2 and3 the form is adapted to snugly fit the interior of the box before ithas been folded to provide a back ing or support for the flanges thereof so that the wrapper flanges may be pressed against the outeh faces of the box flanges without any danger ofcrushing the box. Because of thetaper of the box this form is likewise tapered. In a box of the character and size illustrated in the drawings such a taper may amount toone sixteenth of'an inch.
The formwhich hasjust been described works in conjunction with an-anvil or support which w ll now be described. Th s vil is made up of a rectangular block 25 which, may be-of Wood having a pair of spaced apart rectangular felt pads 26 se-.
cured upon one face. There is a space 27 left betweenthe felt pads 26, thisspace being wider than the width of the hingedportion18 of-the box. The block 25is mounted uponasupport 28. I
lVhen the boxhas. been thrust upon the thrust into .of the tabs 1?:
form and the form descends within the wrapping machine the wrapper will be the path of the descending form with its adhesive-coated side uppermost. The form will press the box against the wrapper when the anvil is encountered and the. felt pads will insure the uniting of the wrapper to that area of the box immediately above said pads. An intermediate portion of the wrapper indicated by the nu- Ineral 29 in Fig. 2 will not be united to the bog because of the space 27 betweenthe felt pa s;
Then the wrapping machine which has rollers 31 mounted upon swingable frames 30 will force the flanges 1 7, 18 of the wrapper against the flanges 11, 12 of the box, this operation being best understood from Fig. 3. N ext the end flanges of the wrapper will be united to the corresponding flanges of. the box. Finally all the wrapper flanges will be tucked down inside of the box and secured to the inner wallslof the box flanges. The last step before folding is the bending the wrapper tabs-l tothe inner WELH'VOf the plngied portion 8, this step being done by H The wrapper isnow united to the box at every point except the section 29v which isstill freeof thehinged portion. The boxisfolded alongthe two crease lines 9 and the cover is brought over so that its three flanges engage with and close the flanges. of thereceptacle portion6. This folding of .the box stretches the wrapper and lays it against the hinged portion 8 whereupon theadhesive coated on the wrapper makes the section 29 unite permanently with portion 8 without any possibility of splitting or tearing of. the Wrapper along. the hinged lines 9. The provision. of the space between the felt pads bringsabout this important result. Were the wrapper to be united to the hinged portion of the box at the same time-it isunited to the other parts thereof, when the box is folded'the Wrapper will frequently, if not always, split alongv the hinge lines. Thissplitting. of the inwardly and the joining of wrapper has up, to th P esent time been the chief objection to the employment of folding one piece boxes. After their wrappers split the boxes are p diflicult to market because of their unsightly appearance.
Boxes made with the present form and anvil are readily salable because'thel wrapper will supporting the wrapper and box during the uniting of the same, said means leaving a part of the Wrapper free-of the box, said part extending transversely of the wrapper intermediate its ends whereby the uniting is incomplete until the box is removed from the machine.
3. In a machine for wrapping folding boxes of the type comprising a receptacle portion, a cover portion and a hinge portion joining the other two portions, an anvil or support adapted to hold the wrapper against the underside of the box during the uniting operation, the face of the anvil in engagement with the wrapper having a break therein, whereby an intermediate section of the wrapper is not presesd against the hinge portion of the box.
4. In a machine for wrapping folding boxes of the type comprising a receptacle portion, a cover portion and a hinge por tion joining the other two portions, an anvil or support adapted to hold the Wrapper against the underside of the box during the uniting operation; a pair of spaced apart felt pads provided upon the supporting face of said anvil, the space separating the pads having an extent approximating the area of the hinge portion of the box, whereby when the wrapper is being pressed against the box an intermediate section thereof will be left free of the hinge portion of the box.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature.
HERBERT H. WAGNER.
