' ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SHOEMIAKERS TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1920.
Application fil ed February 21, 1920. Serial No. 360,472.
T 0 all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. Rnoroo'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Webster, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Shoemakers Tools, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to shoemakers tools and it contemplates the provision of a device whereby tacks, pegs or the like may be quickly and easily removed from a shoe and this notwithstanding the fact that the head of the tack or such like may be broken off.
Those skilled in the art of shoe-making are aware that the shoe upper is pulledover and tacked to the insole of the shoe and then the insole and upper are stitched together by a machine for this purpose. The tacks or pegs are then removed by the use of pincers, but because of their construction the said pincers cause the heads of the tacks to be broken off. When this takes place, it is quite diflicult to remove the tack from the insole and it is to permit of the ready removal of these tacks, whether broken or not that I provide my novel shoe-makers tool.
Other advantageous characteristics of my invention will be fully understood from the following description and claim when the same are read in connection with the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1, is a side elevation of my device with the teeth thereof pointing to the right.
Fig. 2, is a rear elevation thereof.
Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1, however, showing the opposite side of the blade portion of the device.
Fig. 4, is a longitudinal section looking from the front of the device, and
Fig. 5, is a detail view of the form of teeth, I desire to employ in my device.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the views of the drawings.
My novel tool comprises the blade 1 securely fastened in the handle 2 as illustrated. At its end adjacent the handle 2 the blade 1 is provided with the portion 3 and from this portion 3 to the end of the blade 1 and arranged throughout the length thereof are equidistant teeth 4.
These teeth 4 as shown in Fig. 4 are connected together at a point slightly beyond their inner ends and on one side of the blade the teeth terminate in round portions as indicated by 5 and on their opposite sides the teeth are provided with straight portions 6 as illustrated.
It will be apparent that the blade 1 extends between the teeth 4 as shown in Fig. 5.
At its upper end the blade 1 terminates in a tack engaging portion 8 and in order to permit of said easily inserted under the head of a tack, I provide the portion 8 with the slightly beveled portion 7 as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
In the practical use of the device, when it becomes necessary to remove a tack or the like, it is simply necessary to insert the portion 8 under the head of the tack and then bear rearwardly.
If, however, for any reason the head of the tack is broken off, it is then simply necessary to use the spaces between the teeth 4 to receive the broken end of the tack.
Because of the construction of the blade 1 at the points 5 and 6 between the teeth 4, a grip may quickly and easily be obtained on a tack no matter how small a portion of the tack is protruding above the insole of the shoe. After a short period of use a person will become quite adept in the use of the device.
The invention is simple and inexpensive to produce and is very easy to operate, and hence its utility will be apparent. More over, because of its construction the tack may be removed from a shoe without injuring the shoe which is not the case with de vices for similar purposes now in use.
Ilaving described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is In a device for the purpose set forth, the combination of a handle, a blade secured in said handle, a tack pulling jaw arranged at the extreme outer end of the blade, a straight portion being quickly and edge formed on the blade, and an edge 001m 7 In testimony whereof T have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
