UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
AUGUST HERZOG, or NEW vente, NQ Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN EXTENSION TABLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136.243, dated February '25, 1873.
proved Extension Table, of which the following is a specification:
Figures l and 2 are bottom views of my improved extension table, showing the same, respectively, extended and contracted. Figs. 3 'and 4 are vertical longitudinal sections ofthe same, taken, respectively, on the lines C C and K K, Figs. l and 2. Fig. 5 is a vertical transverse section ofthe same on the line C K, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
This invention relates to a new extension table, whose middle portion is vertically adjustable and made self-elevatin g, so that when the sliding extension leaves, which are above it while the table is contracted, are drawn apart, such middle portion will spring up and ll the gap between the sliding leaves, thus producing a perfect extended table, and also an unobjectionable form of contracted table. The invention consists in the improvement of extension tables, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawing, the letters A B represent the extension `or side leaves of the table, that are supported on legs C C in the customary manner, and rigidly connected therewith. Their side rails a a are grooved into side rails 'b b that connect intimately and rigidly with 'the middle leaf or leaves D. In the drawing but one middle leaf is shown, and where more than one are used they are all securelyT fastcned upon the rails b b.
When the extension leaves are pushed against each other, as in Figs. 2 and 4, the middle leaf' D is held under them, as clearly shown in Fig.
4, and the rail o is consequently lowered; but
when the leaves A B are drawn apart to their fullest extent the middle leaf D springs up between them, as in Fi g.'3, a spring or springs, d, causing its elevation. The edges of the plate D are rabbeted to fit the similarly-shaped edges of the leaves A B, and thus to insure the proper appearance of the table.
In constructing the table I prefer tov slot or groove the rails a a and to t into their slots or grooves bars e e, with which a frame, f, is
connected that bears against the` under side of the leaves A B and extends beneath the middle leaf D, as shown. The spring or springs d are supported on this frame or frames f, and thereby eifect the elevation of the leaf D when the space above it is clear of leaves A B.
g is a hook or pin, which I secure to the bar e above mentioned, and which, when the table is extended, maybe swung out under the side rail b to lock the middle leaf in its elevated position. Without such lookin g device the middle leaf could be pressed down against the spring or spriu gs d, which would be objection able.
For extending the table it is only necessary to draw the leaves A B apart until the leaf D` springs up between them. For contracting them it is necessary to first depress the leaf l) so that itwill be out of the way ot the leaves A B, and then to push the latter together.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I 1. The combination, with avertically-adjust `able leaf or leaves, D, of the spring d, arranged about a pin pendent therefrom, and supported ou a frame, j', as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with leaf or leaves D, of the hook g, arranged to lock on the rail b, as
and for the purpose set forth.
AUGUST HERZOG.
