THOMAS A. DAVIES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,218, dated February 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS A. DAVIES, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification: 1
Lamps of railroad lanterns are, from the rough usage to which the lanterns are subjected, very liable to become loosened and disengaged, being ordinarily secured only by pins in the lamp and slots in the waist of the lantern, or by springs which catch over a rim on the lamp. The signal-lanterns of railroads are frequently rendered useless in a moment by a sudden jerk or gyration, and an uncertain signal, or no signal at all, is given when lives and property depend upon one. To remedy this difficulty is the object of my invention; and the invention consists in a drop bolt or slide, by means of which the pin of the lamp is securely fastened in the slot of the lantern, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth and described.
The accompanying drawing illustrates my invention, which is a side view of what is known as a railroad lantern.
A is the base, which is attached to the bottom of the lamp. B is the waist of the lantern. O is a right-angled slot therein, seen partly in dotted lines. D is a pin, which projects from the side of the lamp through the waist. This pin and slot are usually duplicated upon the opposite side of the lantern. E is the drop slide or bolt, consisting of'a reversed T- shaped piece of metal, confined to the waist of the lantern by the broad clip 13, with its upper end turned out at right angles to att'ord a finger hold for raising it, as seen at G.
In the drawing, the slide is seen as when fastening the pin. The latter is at the end of the horizontal portion of the slot, and the slide lamp, provided with pin D, and the body of the lantern having a right-ang1ed slot, as specified, whereby the bolt is raised by the pin when the lamp is adjusted in place, and then falls by its own gravity.
THOS. A. DAVIES.
