APPLICATION FILED JAN.13,19I9. 1,362,063, Patented Dec. 14, 1920.
2 SHEETS-SHEET 2- ATTORNEY KILN.
To all whom it may concern e it known that we, CHARLES D. VEZEY and CLAUDE MARINER, citizens of the United States, residing at Berkeley and Oakland, respectively, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kilns, of which the following is a specification.
his invention relates to furnaces of the type wherein the fire acts upon material fed thereto for the purpose of roasting, calcining, drying or burning such material.
T e principal object of the invention is to provi e a furnace or kiln of this character in which the material acted upon moves continuously through the roasting chamber. Another object is to provide a construction by which one or more kilns may be connected to a single source of draft and in which the draft through each furnace is in the opposite direction to the direction of movement of the material passing therethrough.
A further object is to arrange the chamher into which the material is fed with an inclined surface so that the material will slide of itself toward the exit opening and in which the hottest flame will meet the material which has been longest in the furnace.
Still further objects are to arrange convenient means for having the material acted upon for a shorter or longer interval depending on the length of furnace through which the heated gases pass, and to provide a return down draft flue which will heat the bottom of the pile of material on the floor of the roasting chamber itself.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and more specifically pointed out in the appended claims; it being understood that changes in form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope of the claims may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Referring to the drawings forming a part of this specification:
Fig. 2 is a View in longitudinal section Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 14, 1920. Serial No. 270,966.
through the combustion and roasting chamers.
Fig. 3 is a view in section through the draft flue showing the suction fan.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged horizontal section through the combustion chamber and lower end of the roasting chamber.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged through the roasting chamber.
eferring to corresponding parts in the several views by the same numerals of reference, our-invention comprises a combustion chamber 1 having the. front and rear walls 2 and 3, the side walls 4 and arched roof 5. The front wall is provided with doors 6, and we have here illustrated it as being heated with oil burners 7. bustion chamber is a transverse bridge wall 8, and in the rear wall are two or more openings 9 though which the heated gases pass into the roasting chamber 25.
he side walls and arch of the combustion chamber are continued on the rear of wall 3 for a short distance and are then inclined upwardly at a rather sharp angle. In the floor of this rearward continuation is an opening 10 across which are set grate bars 11.
The inclined roasting chamber above mentioned comprises a floor 12, side walls 13 cross section and arched roof 14. The side walls are continued below the floor 12 forming below the latter a return flue 15. These walls rest on footings 16 in which are built the ends of vertical bars 17 which rest against the outside of the side walls and are tied together above the latter by means of rods 18 thus taking car; of the thrust produced by the arched roo The return flue is also provided with a floor 19 from which rises parallel walls 20. The latter extend the entire length under floor 12 and may be constructed of brick laid in checkered style so as to provide communication between the adjacent passageways.
At the upper end of the roasting chamber the floor 12 is stopped short of the end wall 26, thus providing communication between the roasting chamber and the return flue. This passageway may be closed by means of the pivotally mounted damper plate 27. At this end of the roasting chamber there is also provided a filling opening 28, and withroasting the various ores and burning refuse such as garbage.
Having thus described our invention we claim as new and wish to cover by Letters Patent:
1. A kiln of the character described com prising side walls, a roof and a floor forming an upwardly inclined roasting chamber and a parallel adjoined downwardly inolined return flue connected to said chamber at their upper ends, a draft flue connected to the lower end of said return flue, a damper for closing the connection between said chamber and said flue, and said walls having passageways connecting said chamber and said flue and means for closing said passageways.
2. A kiln comprising side walls, a roof and a floor supported above the bottom of said side walls, said walls, roof and floor forming an upwardly inclined roasting chamber and a parallel downwardly inclined return flue communicating at their upper ends, said side walls having by pass flues connecting said roasting chamber with said return flue and dampers for closing said by pass flues.
3. A kiln comprising side walls, a roof and a floor inclined in an upward direction forming a roasting chamber and a return flue, said kiln having an opening connecting said chamber and said flue at the upper end thereof, a damper for regulating said opening, said walls having passageways intermediate the ends of said chamber extending between the latter and said flue, a damper for closing said passageways, a firebox communicating with the lower end of said chamber and a draft flue communicating with the lower end of said return flue.
4. A kiln of the character described comprising an upwardly inclined portion comprising a bottom, side walls and a roof, a
.oor extending between said side walls forming a chamber and a parallel return flue, a plurality of longitudinal parallel spaced walls extending between said bottom and said floor, said inclined portion having passageways between said chamber and said flue, means for closing said passageways, a horizontal fire-box communicating with the lower end of said inclined portion, a draft flue extending transversely below said kiln, and a communicating flue extending therefrom to said return flue.
5. A kiln of the character described c0mprising an upwardly inclined portion formed of a bottom, side walls and a roof, a horizontal continuation at the foot of said inclined portion forming a fire-box, a division floor extending between said side walls forming a roasting chamber above and a return flue below said floor and having a communicating passage at their upper ends, a damper for closing said passage, said side walls having transverse openings into said chamber, means for closing said openings at the ends thereof, said walls having vertical passageways which cross said openings and dampers in said passageways below said transverse openings.
In testimony whereof we aflix our signatures.
