CAR DOOR HANGER.
APPLICATION FILED DEC.29, 9:9.
Patanted Dec. 7 192% r. erwi CHARLES F. BOYSTEB, 0F CATLI'N, ILLINOIS.
GAR-DOOR HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 29, 1919. Serial No. 847,961.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES F. RoYsTER, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Catlin, in the county of Vermilion, State of.
Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Car-Door Hangers; and I do hereby declare the following tobe a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This. invention relates to new and useful improvements in doors and particularly to doors for box cars.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved hanger for the sliding-door of a box car wherein the usual wheels and rollers are done away with. I
Another object is to provide a novel and improved hanger by means of which the door can he slid laterally with respect to the doorway of the car, and can be swung outwardly and upwardly therefrom.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of a box car showing the invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, showing the door swung outwardly.
Fig. .3 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, through one of the fastening means at the bottom of the door.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged vertical sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 1, through the track, showing one of the hangers in end elevation.
Fig. 5 is a front elevation of a portion of the track, broken away to show one of the hangers.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing, 10 represents the track. which is secured to the side'of the car over the .doorway 11, and extending a suitable distance to one side thereof. This track is formed with a longitudinally extending T-shaped slot 12, transverse bolts 13 bein disposed through the track and slot thereo at the opposite ends to prevent the hangers from being removed from the track.
The hangersv consist of hinge members per leaf of each comprising an upper leaf 14 and a lower leaf 15. The lower leaf is securedto the u perportion of the door by the bolts 16. he upper leaf has the pair of openings 17 formed therethrough, and in each opening is a transverse pin 18 which has itsends resting on the ledges 19 of the slot 12. It will be noted that the slot'12 is in the form of an inverted T whence the'formation of the said shoulders or ledges. The portion of the upper leaf, above the pins, rides in the-upper vertical portion'of the slot. Disposed above the pins and having recesses in their lower faces, as shown at 20, for the reception of the ends of the ins, are the blocks 21. These blocks slide in the side portions of the horizontal legs of the- T-slot.
Secured to the side of the car, below the doorway, are the outwardly extending, and vertically apertured lugs 22, for the reception of the locking pins 23, carried slidahly in the brackets 24, on the outer face of the lower portion of the door. These pins are attached to the door by means of the chains 25, to prevent the same being lost when lifted from the lugs and bracketsf In the center of the horizontal portion of the T-slot there is formed a slot-26 which extends theentire length of the track for the slidable reception of the port-ion of the upthe hinge hanger below the ins 1.8. p
What is claimed is: v
In a car. door and hanger the'combination with a track having an inverted and longitudinally extending T-slot therein, the horizontal portion of the slot opening through the bottom of the track the entire length thereof, of a pair of hinged leaves, one of said leaves being adapted for attachment to a door, the other leaf being disposed through the open bottom of the T-slot and extending into the vertical portion of said slot, transverse pins rotatably disposed through the said other leaf within the horizontal portion of the T-slot, and blocks disposed in the slot and having recesses inthe bottom faces receiving the ends of said pins rotatably therein and movable longitudinally of the track with the hanger.
In testimony whereof, I atlix my signature. in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES F. ROYSTER.
Witnesses I Gno. CoLLINs, T. F. WUREL.
