Description

UNITED STATES PATENT A OFFICE.
CHARLES W. GREENE, or JACKSON, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN LABELlNG-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,154, dated Februaryy 25, 1873.
To all whom '5t may concern.- n
Beit known that I, GHARLEs W. GREENE, of Jackson, in the county of Madison and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Labeling-Machines; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon forming partof this specification, and in Whichy Figure l is a perspective view, and Fig. 2 a side elevation of my machine. Fig. 3 is a transverse verticalsection of the same.
My invention consists inan improved method of constructing machines for attaching printed or written labels or addresses to papers, pamphlets, packages, wrappers, cards, or for any other purposes to which it may apply. My improvements consist substantially in a presser-foot, A, actuated by a pedal-lever, L, which, after being depressed to a contact with the platen l?, is returned to its first position by a spring, S; also, of a paste-roller, R,
over which is passed the list of addresses for the purpose of being gummed for use. The
`presser-foot A has a cutting-edge, a., and may be of any size required. The platen P is rendered self-adjustin g by being formed either of a Wood or metal plate resting upon spring or springs, or a rubber or other suitable pad, b,
which, yielding to the pressure of the fot, Will give a uniform pressure upon the address-strip thereunder.
Any form of power may be employed to actuate the presser-foot A.
The paste-roller It may be either Worked through a cup ofpaste or gum, or be covered therewith by the use of a brush or other suitable appliance. Thev paste may also be applied to an address-strip directly by a brush, or by passing it over a stationary gummed or paste surface.
The manner of operating this machine may be thus described: The article to receive the label is placed upon the platen P, and the la bel, with its surface pasted from the roll It, is placed in proper position upon it immediately under the presser-foot A, and While under pressure therefrom is detached from the remainder of the slip or sheet by a motion of the hand which severs it along the line of the cutting-edge a of the presser.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A presser-foot, actuated by foot or hand, for pressing upon an address-label With so much force as is necessary to secure its adhe.
sion, which presser-foot is provided with a cutting-edge by'which the address is cut or torn from the strips or sheets prepared for the plllDOS (t.
2. In combination with the above presserfoot, a platen which shall be so adjustable as to secure a uniform pressure upon the label or address, though the packages to which they are applied may vary in thickness.
3. The labeling-machine, consisting of 'the presser-foot A with cutting-edge ,spring S, pedatlever L, yielding platen P, and pasteroller R, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 16th day of May, 1872.
