IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR STAMPING AND FlIEDING OUT PAPER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JOHN O.1V[ONTIGNANI and JOHN GIBSON, ,Jr., both of the city and county of Albany, State of New York, have invented an Apparatus for Making Labels and the like; and we do hereby declare that the following is a description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical view from above of the apparatus with the covers removed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same.

The nature of our invention relates to the making or preparing of labels in the order they are to be used; and consists of a paperreceptacle, a feed-roller, a stamp, a papertcarer, and a writing-table or board, each of which is suitably arranged to operate with the paper (which paper is previously gummed on its back) to make the apparatus capable of holding the paper, delivering it as needed, stamping it, and afiording convenience for writing on the same, and for tearing it off in such size as may be desired, when the label may, with a little wetting on the back, be applied to the package to be marked; the object of this invention being to furnish store-keepers and others with a ready, simple, and economical means of preparing labels for marking packages and tickets to be used as tallies for cashiers in stores, or any similar purpose; also, combining therewith, when desired, a stamping apparatus (either with or without the use of ink) to stamp on the labels as made a business-card or address, or other printed matter.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to deceptacle we place a feed roller, D, preferably provided with rubber hands a a, as shown, to feed the paper from the receptacle A to and under the stamp and paper-tearer. The said feed-roller is properly supported or steadied by its axlesc 0, having their hearings in the sides of the receptacle A. One end of the feed-roller is provided with a thumb-wheel, b, by-which the roller may be revolved in either direction. A spring or shoe, e, is also used to press the feed-roller down on the paper, which spring or shoe is connected with the framework above. Its shape or form is not material as long as it is made efficient to hold the roller properly down onto the paper. Placed preferably forward of the feed-roller D is the stamp E, which stamp works vertically toward the bottom of the receptacle or case A, and is properly connected with or supported from the same. Said stamp may be of any of the usual forms, using ink or not, as may be desired. changed to any other position, relative to the apparatus, or relative to the paper to be stamped. F is a paper-tearer or cutter, secured above the bottom B, and may be either fixed permanently in position, or it may be hinged at one end, and held by a catch or other device at the other end, as may be desired. A small space is left between the said paper-tearer F and the bottom B, through which the paper may pass. G is a writingtable or board, extending from the papertearer F, and of any desired or suitable size, as may be required by the nature of the labels to be written,and consists of a 'flat surface, which may be a continuation of the bottom piece B, or may be made to consist of a supplementary piece.

With this apparatus either sheet or roll paper may be used, though we give preference to roll-paper on account of compactness. The paper from which we are to make labels we previously gum on the back, more or less, and when the gum is dried we form the paper into a roll, as the roll P, and place it in the receptacle A, as shown. The end of the outer coil we pass under the feed-roller D, when the shoe 6 will press the bands a a of the feedroller on the paper, which can now be fed out by revolving the thumbwheel b in the proper direction. If it is desired to stamp the label to be made, the stamp E is pressed or struck down upon the paper, when a portion of the paper has been fed out. The label after being prepared is then torn off by pulling the length lying on or against the writing surface G upward against the paper-tearer or cutter F, in the same manner as with ordinary paper-tearers. Then the gum on the back of the label is moistened, and the label applied to the package or article.

With this apparatus package-labels, orderslips, cashiers tickets, and the like, can be readily prepared in a manner most economical in regard to time and material. This apparatus may be either secured upright, as against a post or wall, or may be used on a counter or desk, as may be required.

Having described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by. Letters Patent, 1s-

1. In an apparatus for making labels, thei arrangement of the writing-tablet or board G with the case A, provided with the feed-roller D, capable of operating toward the tearer F, whereby an inclosed roll of blank paper may be fed under the tearer F, and onto the said writing-tablet Gr, there to receive any desired writing before final separation from the main roll, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of the stamping or printing device E with a label apparatus, consistin g of the case A, feed-roller D, tearer F, and writing-tablet or board G, arranged substantially in the manner set forth, for the purpose specified.
