Be it known that 1,;PAUL F. Co r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Addressing lvlechanism (Strip) and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had tothe accomr panying drawings, which-form part of this specification. 1,
This invention is a novel mechanism for addressing articles, such ,as envelopes, packages, newspapers, andthelikmby printing thereon orapplying to each of such articles the address of the person for whom it is intended.
The invention is adaptedfor use in connection .with printing presses and other mechanisms handling articles so that when the articles are delivered they are also addressed and ready for mailing.

In thefdrawings I have diagrammatically illustrated part of a lprintingipress to which the invention is applied; but thepress may he a rotary, fiat bed,;or other type, of press. 1 In the drawings F designates the folder former of a printing press, Rthe usual roller atthe top ,ot the former mounted on a shaft: S, which is rotated as indicated by the arrow so as to assist the web of paper WV toa1 idpver the formeiz, The shaft S is driven by theusual gearing (not shown) and above the shaft S is a tie rod T, which usually carries the spring pressed control rollers (not shown) which hold the web in contact with the roller at the top of the former. Below the shaft S is a bar or rod B which supports the upper end of the former F. All of these parts are of ordinary construction and arrangement and will be readily understood.
In the particular embodiment of the invention illustrated the addressing attachment frame 1 is connected with and sup-.
ported by the rods T and B, and said frame 1 is shown as provided with an arm 1*, which is secured by a split collar 1 and bolts 1 to the rod T, and the base member 1 is supported upon. the tie bar B and detachably attached thereto by clamping bolt 1 as indicated in the drawing.
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated in the drawings the addresses are successively printed upon a narrow strip or web of paper A, which may be wound in a roll upon a spool 8, the shaft 8 of which may be detachably supported in a bracket 1" on the frame 1. The strip of addresses ispreferably perforated or weakened between successive addresses so that the successive addresses may be readily detached from the strip like stamps.
The address strip A is'led from the roll 8 to and over a feeding roller 2, rotatably mounted on a stud 1 attached to the frame 1. This rollerQ is preferably provided with pins 2 adapted to engage a series of longitudinal perforations in the strip A to ensure the accurate feed of the latter. The roller 2 may be operated so as to feed the strip forward preferably step by step by any'suitable means. As shown it is provided with a ratchet 2* on one end engaged by a pawl 2, pivotally mounted on a gear 2 loosely mounted on the stud 1 adjacent the ratchet; gear 2 is engaged by a. rack bar 2* held in mesh with the pinion by a guide 2 also pivotally mounted on the stud 1 beside the gear 2; and the said rack bar is pivotally connected to a crank pin or stud 1 on the hub of the rotary presser member, or other suitable part, so that the rack bar is oscillated once for each rotation of said member, and causes gear 2 to oscillate and thus impart the desired extent of rotary movement to roller 2 at and in the proper times.
The strip may be guided and lightly held in'contact with the surface of the feeding roller by any suitable means; a guard plate 2 is shown in'the drawings; and, if devsired, a presser roller 2 may be arranged beside the feed roller 2 and coact therewith to feed the strip. From the roller 2 the strip is directed downwardly past a guide plate 3 which is secured to the frame 1, and in the example shown lies close to the face of the former F.
Pivotally mounted on the frame '1, opposite the lower part of the guide 3, is a guide plate 3, which is shown as provided with a projection 3 adapted to be engaged by a cam member 4 on the presser member l, to cause guide 3 to clamp the strip just before and while the presser pad is applying the leading address-stamp to the paper. The guide plate 3 may be normally slightly separated from the guide 3 by any suitable means, such as a spring 3.
The mechanism shown is adapted to feed the address strip in such time and manner that one of the address stamps, or sections of the strip A, will be projected below the edge of the guide 3 and closely adjacent the former in position to be applied to the paper or web W descending the former l5, and preferably in the margin between impressions thereon, by suitable pressing means.
As shown the pressing member .4 is mounted on an arm 1 attached to a shaft 49 suitably journaled in the frame 1, and the shaft 4 should be rotated at such speed that the presser member at will apply an address stamp to the web for each rotation of said shaft 4.
The presser member 4 preferably has a yielding pad or face P, of any suitable material, to contact the address strip. The arm 4 is provided with a cam extension 1 that is adapted to engage the projection 3" on the guide plate 3, just before the pad 41 engages an address .stamp, and cause the guide 3 to clamp or bind the address strip against the clamp 3 when one address section or stamp depends below the guide in position to be engaged by the pad 4, and such projecting address stamp will be detached from the strip by the action of the pad 4 and applied to the paper as the latter travels down the former.
The shaft 4? may be rotated by any sl1ilable means. As shown it is provided with a gear 1 meshing with an intermediate gear 4 which may be journaled on a stud l on frame 1, and meshes with a gear 5 on a shaft 5 journaled in the frame 1. The gear 5 may be driven by a train of gears 5", 5i" journaled on studs in the frame 1, and the gear 5 meshes with a gear 5 on the shaft S, so that the operative parts of the addressing mechanism are actuated from the shaft S, which is operated from the power driven part of the machine.
The address strip A may be coatml with an adhesive on the reverse side and in that case suitable means should be provided for moistening the adhesive side of the address stamp before it is applied to the web \V. 1 preferably apply moisture to the spot of paper to which the address stamp is to be applied, and then apply the address stamp to this dampened spot. The addresses are preferably applied to the margin of the page of] the newspaper which will be outermost when folded, and customarily the press is so threaded that the outermost page is on the outside layer of paper passing over the former so that no rearrangement of the forms in the presswould be ordinarily neees inorder to use the attachment there with. v i a By locating the addressing attachment at the former and printing the addresses upon the papers as they pass over the former the attachment is inthe most convenient place for operation uponthe paper; the addressing devices can be readily adjusted to correctly apply'the addresses upon the margins whenever the papers are being the addressing apparatus is not the way when. it is necessary to thread the pres'spr folder, in making ready the press, orin case web. Other advantages of the invention when'used as an addressing attachment for printing presses will be readily appreciated by those familiar with the art. a i
While I have described the invention as embodiedin an attachment for web printing presses and applied to such presses it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that the invention could be readily embodied in a separate machine for addressing letters, envelopjes, packages, and the like. In such case the frame would be properly modified, and means provided for rotating the shaft 43 manually or by power, all of which will bereadily understood and provided bythose familiar with the art. a
Having described my invention. what I claim is: a y i I. In combination with means for print ing and folding papers including a folder former; ofmeans for detaching difierent address stamps from a strip stamps to differentimpressions-on the paper as it descends the former.

In a printing press in combination with means for printing and folding papers in which the paper is printed and then passed over a folder former; means adjacent the former for applying a fluid to spots on suceessivepapers; and means for thereafter applying addresses on the spotted "portions of the paper as it descends the former.

In combination with means for printing and folding papers; means for applying a fluid to spots on the margins of successive impressions on the paper before it passes the folder former; means for feeding an address strip; and means for applying differ ent addresses from such strip to the spots on the paper as it passes over the former.

In combination with means for printing and folding papers including a folder former; of means for applying a fluid to spots on the margins of successive newspaper impressions on the web of paper as it descends the former; means for feeding an address strip; and means for applying addresses from the strip to'the spotted portions of the web while it is passing over the former. In combination with means for printi'ng and folding a newspaper web including means at the former for applying water to spots on different news paper impressions on the web; means for feeding an address strip toward the former strip to the spots on successive newspaper impressions on the web as it passes down the 10. In combination with means for printing and folding papers in which the paper is printed and then passed over a folder former; means adjacent the former for applying Water to spots on the successive newspaper impressions on the paper; and means for thereafter applying different address stamps to the spotted portions of the paper as it descends the former.

In combination with means for printing and folding papers; means for applying water to spots on the margins of successive impressions on the paper before it reaches the folder; means for feeding an address strip; and means for applying different address stamps from the strip to the spots on the paper as it passes over the former.

In combination with means for print ing and folding papers including a folder former; of means for applying water to spotson the margins of successive newspaper impressions; with means for detaching ad dress stamps from an address strip and applying them to the spotted portions oi the web while it is passing over the former. 13. In combination with means for printing and. folding a news 'maper web inclui'ling a folder former; means at the fornn-r for applying water to spots on different newspaper impressions on the web as it passes down the former; means for feeding an address strip toward the "forum r; means for dctaching address stamps from such strip; and means for applying such stamps to the spots on successive newspaper in'iprcssions on the web as it passes down the former.
I l. In combination with means for printing and folding papers including a former for folding the paper after printing; means for feeding an address strip adjacent the former; and means for applying an address from such strip to the successive papers as they descend the former.

In combination with means for printing and folding papers in which the paper is printed and then passed over a folder former; means adjacent the former for feeding an address strip; and means for applydiiferent addresses from such strip to the successive newspaper impressions on the paper it descends the former.
16. In combination with means for printing and folding papers including a folder former; of means for feeding an aiildress strip beside the former in unison with the movement of successive newspaper impressions on the web of paper as it descends the former; and means for applying addresses from the strip to tilt? impressions on the web while it is passing over the former.
17. In an addressing mechanism the cont bination of a feed roller; means for feeding an address strip; means for detaching successive stamps from said strip; means for clamping the strip adjacent the impression point; and means for applying the address stamps to the paper with means for applyin moisture to only that portion of the paper to which the address stamp is to be applied.
18. In an addressing mechanism the combination of a feed roller; means for feeding an address strip: means for clamping the strip adjacent the impression point; and means for detaching and applying the ad dress stamps to thepaper; with means for ill) latrines and means for applying a liquid to the spot on the paper where the stamp is to be apwhen detached from the plied before the paper reaches the stamp applying point.
i 19. In an addressing apparatus the combination of a feed roller for a stamp strip;
a guide directing the strip to the applying point; a member for clamping the strip; a rotatable member adapted to apply a stamp when detached from the strip; means on said member for causing the clamp to hold the strip just before the stamp is applied; and means connected with said stamp applying member for imparting a step by step movement to the strip feed devices.
20. In an addressing apparatus the combination of a feed roller for a stamp strip; a guide directing the strip tothe applying point; a member for clamping the strip; a rotatable member adapted to apply a stamp the strip; means on said member for causing the clamp to hold the strip just before the stamp is applied; and means connected with said stamp applying member for imparting a step by step movement to the strip feed devices; with a means, for directing the paper past the stamping point; and means for applying stamp liquid to a spot on the paper where stamp is to be applied before the paper reaches the stamp applying point.
21. In combination with means for printing and folding papers including a folder former; of an addressing mechanism, comprising a frame adjacent the folder former; a
strip carrier mounted on said frame; a strip feeding roller mounted on said frame; a strip guide mounted on said frame; a strip clamp adjacent the guide; a rotatable presser mem-; ber adapted to apply the stamp upon the paper descending the former; means on said member for causingthe clamp to engage the strip when an address stamp is projected into applying position; and means actuated by said member for imparting a step by step motion to the feeding roller.
22. In combination with means for printing a nd folding papers including a folder former an addressing mechanism comprising a frame adjacent the folder former; a strip feeding means mounted on said frame;
a strip clamp adjacent the guide; a rotatable pressure member adapted to apply the stamps upon the paper descending the former; means for causing the. clamp to engage the strip when an address stamp is projected into applying position;land means actuated bysaid member for imparting motion to the strip feeding means; with means for applya ing liquid to the spot on the paper where the stamp is to be applied before the {paper reachesthe stamp applying point. p
23. In combination with means for printing and folding papers including a folder adjacent the guide; a rotatable prising a frame adjacent the folder former;
a strip carrier mounted on said frame; a
strip feeding roller mounted on said frame;
a strip guide mounted on said frame; a strip clamp adjacent the guide; a rotatable presser member adapted toapply the stamp upon the paper descending the former; means on said member for causing the clampto engage the strip when. an address stamp is projected into applying position; and means actuated bysaid member for imparting a step by step motion to the feeding roller; with means "for applying water to the spot on the paper where thestamp is to be applied before the paper reaches the stamp applying point. 1

In an addressing mechanism; a frame; a strip feeding means mounted on said frame; a strip clamp; a presser member adapted to detach the stamp and apply the same upon the paper; means for causing the clamp to engage the strip when an address stamp is projected into applying position; vand means for imparting motion to the strip feeding means; with means for directing the paper past the stamping point;

In combination, an addressing mech anism comprising a frame; a strip feeding means mounted on said frame; a strip clamp presser member adapted to detach the stamp and apply the stamp upon the paper; means for causing the clamp to engage the strip when an address stamp is projected into applying position; and means actuated by said member for imparting a motion to the strip feed ing means; with means for directing the paper past the stamping point; a rotary member adjacent the stamping point; and
a spot moistener carried by said member for applying liquid to the spot on the. paper where the stamp is to be applied before the paper reaches the stamp applying point.
