at? I INVENTOR.
GEORGE FREYTAG.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE FREYTAG, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
BOX-TOE MATERIAL FOR FOOTWEAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7, 1920.
Application filed August 18, 1919. Serial No. 318,182.
zen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Franclsco,
State of California, have invented a new and useful Box-Toe Material for Footwear, of which the following is a specification in such full and clear terms as will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.
This invention relates to a box toe or counter material for shoes and an object of the invention is to produce a material which shall be practically waterproof and stiff enough to secure the desired results, while it is at the same time very light.
Another object of the invention is to produce a material which is capable of being made in sheets and cut out with a die to the desired size thereby reducing the cost of manufacture of the material.
Other objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawings in which the same reference numeral is applied to the same portion throughout, but I am aware that there may be modifications thereof.
Figure l is an edge View of the material,
Fig. 2 is a plan of a sheet that has had a number of box toes cut therefrom, and
Figs. 3 and 4 are views of two of the box toes cut from the sheet shown in F ig. 2.
This invention relates to an improvement on my Patent N 0. 1,198,905 granted September 19, 1916, and dispenses with the cloth therein made use of.
In the present invention, sheets of a paper such as manila wrapping paper. or other suitable heavy paper 1, 2 and 3 are impregnated with a mixture of waterproof ing adhesive consisting of casein and lime. After the sheets are impregnated with the casein and lime they are thoroughly treated when they are ready for use. The sheets are made of as many plies as is deemed necessary and are cut up as shown in Fig. 2 to produce a series of. pieces, such as are shown at 4 and 5 of such pattern as may be necessary. They are then ready to be fitted to and sewed in the uppers of the shoes.
WVhat I claim is as follows, but various modifications may be made in the construc tion shown in the drawings and above particula-rly described form, within the purview of my inVention- A box toe or counter material consisting of a plurality of paper sheets impregnated with lime and casein and dried after such impregnation.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 9"day of August, A. D. 1919.
